    Philosophy Meets Buddhism Seminar

Woodstock · Blue Lotus Buddhist Temple & Meditation Center, 221 Dean St

Explore where Western philosophy and Buddhist teachings meet in a four-session seminar led by Gus Santo. Meetings take place weekly for four consecutive weeks, and the final gathering features a closing session with pizza. The cost is a single, non-refundable fee of $40, and all proceeds go to the Blue Lotus Temple. Themes include ethics through compassion, happiness, utility, and duty, with attention to what grounds ethical reflection and how the Buddha unites compassion with mindful awareness of suffering; the Buddha in conversation with Martin Heidegger on being thrust into the world, mortality, freedom, and the responsibilities that follow; Emmanuel Levinas on otherness alongside Buddhist emptiness and no-self, raising questions about unity, difference, and impermanence; and an examination of suffering through Arthur Schopenhauer and his influence on Friedrich Nietzsche, compared with the Buddha’s insight. The instructor’s path includes service as a U.S. Army drill sergeant, six years as a Benedictine monk studying philosophy, monastic history, and theology, graduation with highest honors from St. John’s University followed by an appointment to its philosophy faculty, later work as a job analyst for the City of Chicago’s Department of Human Resources, and subsequent service as a mental health professional at Pioneer Center in McHenry, Illinois. A dharmic practitioner since 2020, Gus has taught adult philosophy courses at Unitarian Universalist congregations in Hartland, Wisconsin, and McHenry, and has led seminars on Western philosophy and Buddhism at the Blue Lotus Temple in Woodstock.

    Drum Circle

Woodstock · Blue Lotus Buddhist Temple & Meditation Center, 221 Dean St

    Free

This community drum circle at Blue Lotus Temple welcomes all experience levels. Attendance is free, with a suggested $5 donation. The music is created together on the spot through shared rhythms rather than rehearsed pieces. There is no designated leader. A facilitator may start a simple, steady pulse and the group’s sound grows naturally, inviting open, healthy creative expression. Participants often play hand drums such as frame or hoop drums, djembes, congas, bongos, doumbeks, darbukas and ashikos, along with percussion like maracas, claves, tambourine, gongs, tongue drums, bells, singing bowls and rainsticks. Many people discover or rekindle their creativity in this kind of setting as each person adds a voice to the collective rhythm and experiences how individual parts support the whole. Taking part in a circle like this can support well-being in many ways, including easing stress, sharpening focus, elevating mood, encouraging self-expression, strengthening social bonds, cultivating mindfulness and allowing for healthy emotional release. Ken Talaga brings a deep background in music and communal drumming. He began training in childhood on keyboards, clarinet and drum kit, first encountered drum circles in 1987 and later incorporated Native American style flute into his playing. He has participated in and led many circles at community gatherings and currently facilitates three local monthly sessions. He supports the therapeutic benefits of music and sound, crafts Native American style flutes and other nature-inspired instruments, and has studied Taoism and Buddhism for decades as a Reiki Fusion Usui Shiki Ryoho Master Teacher.

Crystal Singing Bowls and Sound Healing with Diamond

Woodstock · Blue Lotus Buddhist Temple & Meditation Center, 221 Dean St

Sacred Sound Practitioner Diamond leads an immersive crystal bowl sound healing experience that aims to soothe, inspire, and awaken the spirit. A set of quartz crystal bowls fills the room with layered vibrations that surround the body and mind, inviting deep tranquility as barriers to peace gently dissolve. The flowing tones move around and through the listener much like gentle ocean waves, encouraging a meditative state. As the resonance settles in, the mind can drift toward theta and delta brainwave states associated with accessing deeper subconscious and superconscious awareness. Many connect these states with healing, renewal, and rejuvenation. Settle in, let the mind relax, and allow the harmonies to bring the whole self into balance.
