Thunder Youth Cheer Camp
Young cheer enthusiasts can spend a few days at Woodstock North High School learning cheer, dance, and stunting with the WNHS Cheer team. The camp welcomes all experience levels, and participants are grouped by age to support skill development. Registration includes a T-shirt. Campers can build new skills, make friends, and finish with a spirited performance under the lights at a football game.

For more than six decades, The McHenry County Fair has honored the county’s young women who lead with confidence, show kindness, and uplift their community. This free event at the fair features the moment when 2025 Miss Queen Arianna passes her crown to the new 2026 Miss McHenry County Queen, along with the coronation of the 2026 Teen and Junior Queens and a special ceremony for participants in the noncompetitive Princess Mentoring Program. Prospective contestants can enter in age based categories, including Miss Queen for ages 17 to 21, Teen Queen for ages 13 to 17, Junior Queen for ages 9 to 13, and the Princess Mentoring Program for ages 5 to 9.

Main exhibition categories include Open for all ages and Junior for those 18 and under, with select opportunities for ages 7 and under. Some exhibitions also offer Amateur or Semi-Pro divisions. All vendor applications and ticket sales are handled directly by the McHenry County Fair, and the only way to become a vendor is to submit and deliver an application in person or by mail to the MCFA office.

Draft Horse Pulls
Teams of draft horses go head to head in the grandstand at the McHenry County Fair. Working in pairs, they pull a Horse Pulling Dynamometer, owned and operated by Scott Skinkis of Brillion, Wisconsin, using preset weight settings. A successful attempt requires moving the load 27 and a half feet. Teams that reach the full distance advance to heavier weights, and the process continues by elimination until the team that moves the biggest load the farthest is declared the winner.

Many people engage in drum circles for benefits that can include easing stress, sharpening focus, lifting mood, deepening social bonds, encouraging mindfulness, and supporting healthy emotional release. Background information highlights Ken Talaga, a musician who began training in childhood, first experienced communal drumming in 1987, and later incorporated Native American style flute into his music. He has taken part in and facilitated drum circles at gatherings such as Pagan Pride events, Earth Day celebrations, and fire walks, and continues to advocate for the therapeutic value of music and sound. He also crafts Native American style flutes and other nature-inspired instruments and is a Reik Fusion Usui Shiki Ryoho master and teacher.

Open to all, this discussion-based seminar explores the meeting point of Western thought and Buddhist teaching. The current series focuses on Emmanuel Levinas and the idea of the Other alongside the Buddha’s insights on emptiness and no-self. Together these perspectives prompt questions about claims that we are all one, how impermanence squares with sameness, and whether the notion of universal unity still matters if the emptiness that precedes ego takes priority. This seminar runs over four consecutive weeks and concludes with a friendly pizza wrap-up in the final meeting. A single non-refundable fee of $40 covers the entire series, and every dollar is donated to the Blue Lotus Temple. Sessions are led by Gus Santo, whose path spans service as a U.S. Army drill sergeant, six years as a Benedictine monk studying philosophy, monastic history, and theology, an appointment to the philosophy faculty at St. John’s University after graduating summa cum laude, public service as a job analyst for the City of Chicago, work as a mental health professional at Pioneer Center in McHenry, Illinois, and ongoing dharmic practice since 2020. He has taught adult education philosophy courses at Unitarian Universalist congregations in Hartland, Wisconsin and McHenry, and has facilitated seminars on Western philosophy and Buddhism at the Blue Lotus Temple in Woodstock.

Since the locations are spread out, everyone will drive their own vehicles between stops. These grounds are known for their beauty and history, creating a thoughtful setting for the experience. A three-day Working Equitation camp tailored to each horse and rider welcomes all experience levels. With two instructors on site, participants receive extensive individual attention. Plan to spend plenty of time in the saddle. Instruction is led by Karen, a judge and technical delegate for the sport with multiple national and regional championship titles, and Mike, a multi-time national and regional champion who also holds a USAWE Silver Medal. The program begins with the Dressage phase, working through appropriate tests and movements along with targeted exercises to build skills. Saturday centers on obstacles, with practice on each one and short course rides in the afternoon. Sunday brings everything together in a relaxed schooling show where riders can request as much or as little coaching as they want. Karen and Mike will walk the Ease of Handling course with participants and share strategy and guidance. The schooling show is limited to 8 riders. Space is limited and preregistration is required. The full three-day option is $450 and includes a dry stall. Single-day participation is $200 per day and includes a stall. Schooling show only is $150.

McHenry Murder Mystery - GAME OVER
Step into the role of a detective and work through a trail of puzzles and clues to uncover the culprit. The investigation unfolds through a mix of video-based clues and live, in-person interactions, guiding participants around downtown McHenry as the story develops. It blends a classic whodunit with a citywide scavenger hunt and escape room style challenges for an immersive experience. Check-in is staggered, so arrive as indicated on your ticket. A Murder Mystery Ticket for ages 13 and up is $20 and includes a commemorative backpack, water bottle, a suspect guide, and additional items. A Kids Scavenger Hunt Ticket for ages 12 and under is $5 and provides a companion scavenger hunt that lets kids play along without revealing upcoming clues, plus a top secret detective pack.

At Deicke Park, Pawfest brings the community together to celebrate animals adopted through Animal House Shelter. The annual gathering is open to people who have adopted from AHS, those considering adoption, and anyone who simply loves animals. A three day pass is $139, and a $60 deposit secures a seat. Payment can be made by phone with a credit card at 815.526.3316 or by registering online. Each participant is provided an individual six foot table with a comfortable chair and ample power for laptops and electronic machines. Dinner is included, along with a table gift bag featuring items from event vendors and chances to win through vendor raffles. Attendees have access to the store’s tools, including Cricut machines with cartridges, a Big Shot with dies and embossing folders, Brother machines, a Glimmer machine, templates, punches, a cutting system, and more. A break room is available with a refrigerator offering filtered water and ice, a microwave, coffee maker, toaster, and a soda vending machine. Sharing snacks on the community counter is optional and encouraged by many participants. Cancellation policy: More than 90 days before the event, fees may be transferred to another event within the calendar year if the spot is filled, with a $15 convenience and administration fee for date changes. Within 90 days of the event, deposits are not refundable or transferable.

Attendees can expect insights into the science of equine behavior, practical methods for addressing unwanted behaviors, approaches to help a horse recover from a meltdown, and guidance on interpreting emotional and communicative signals. The importance of clear, consistent cues from the horse’s point of view is explored, along with how to recognize early signs of refusal before reacting. The presentation includes a Q&A. The event takes place in the Luecht Auditorium at McHenry County College, with parking available in Lot B near the auditorium entrance. A limited Meet & Greet with Julie Goodnight is offered after the seminar for up to 20 participants, providing private time for conversation and photos. This add-on experience benefits the Hooved Animal Humane Society and its rescue and rehabilitation work, and a seminar ticket is required to participate. Hosted by the Cary-Grove Area Chamber of Commerce, this long-running community celebration offers a safe, family-friendly way to enjoy Halloween. The Annual Halloween Walk features trick-or-treating, creative costumes, and a parade led by the 2025 Miss Cary-Grove. In Cary, the parade starts at Tasty Sushi and ends at Athletico in the Jewel Shopping Center. In Fox River Grove, the parade begins at Leader Ace Hardware in the Stone Hill Shopping Center and wraps up at Wonderland Kids Academy. There is no cost to attend or participate, and local businesses interested in taking part can contact the Cary-Grove Area Chamber of Commerce.
