Free events in Joliet, IL

Watch nesting herons, egrets, and cormorants in action, with a chance to spot a resident bald eagle. To protect the colony during nesting season, access is restricted, so wildlife viewing is available only during designated public hours. Volunteers and staff will be on hand at the viewing platform and the visitor center to answer questions. This free program welcomes all ages and does not require registration. Bring binoculars or a spotting scope for the best views, and use the preserve parking lot. For the protection of this designated nature preserve, dogs and bicycles are not allowed in the Heron Rookery. The viewing platform is reached by a crushed limestone trail that can be uneven. Anyone who needs an auxiliary aid or service should submit a request at least 48 hours before the program.

A give-back gathering marks the PSHS Class of 2011’s 15-year reunion at McBride’s on 52. The event is open to everyone, and a portion of proceeds from the venue will be donated to a cause chosen by the group. Admission is free, and DJ Timmy Rotn will spin throwback hits from 2007 through 2011.

This free event features many bands, a food truck, and additional offerings.

Pack a picnic and gather behind Pilcher Park Nature Center for a relaxed late summer meal and friendly conversation, then head out on a birding walk to look for early migrants as well as familiar residents. Possible sightings include Tufted Titmouse, Pileated Woodpeckers, and Great Horned Owls. Trails include both paved and natural surfaces, and insect repellent is recommended. All ages are welcome.
