NATIVE GARDENS, a comedy by Karen Zacarias

254 Veterans Way, Carmel · verified Aug 2
    See details

Carmel Community Players and director Lori Raffel present Native Gardens, a contemporary comedy by Karen Zacarias about next-door neighbors whose well-meaning plans spiral into a backyard battle. New arrivals Pablo and Tania Del Valle settle beside longtime residents Virginia and Frank Butley, and the two households agree to swap a chain link divider for a refined wooden fence that will impress Pablo’s colleagues and highlight Frank’s manicured English garden. When the true boundary line comes to light, Tania’s love of native plants and wildflowers clashes with Frank’s pesticide-reliant approach, and a dispute over yards blossoms into a witty clash of tastes, territory, and neighborly etiquette. Directed by Lori Raffel and produced by Rich Phipps, the production features Oscar Otero as Pablo Del Valle, Yolanda Valdivia as Tania Del Valle, Larry Adams as Frank Butley, and Vickie Cornelius Phipps as Virginia Butley, with ensemble performances by Jacob Slager and Katie Floyd.

    Scouts' Honor

The District Theatre, 627 Massachusetts Ave, Indianapolis · verified Aug 2
    See details

From the creators of Dysentery! The Musical comes a fresh original musical comedy where scout cookies crash into courtroom antics and a fundraising plan goes off the rails. Lacy swore to honor her troop and her country, yet she now faces a trial after pushing cookie sales too far. What begins as a small case of unpaid cookie debt balloons into a full-blown legal circus filled with rival scouts, shaky legal tactics, hard-sell seminars, and songs delivered from the stand. At the center is a thorny question: who carries the blame when merit badges, bonuses, and snack-fueled capitalism take the spotlight? Bursting with outsized characters, clever-silly humor, and gloriously over-the-top musical numbers, the show puts badges, justice, sisterhood, and the high-pressure world of youth fundraising under scrutiny. It suits fans of courtroom comedies, musical sendups, cookie-season antics, legal shenanigans, and anyone who has ever felt nudged into buying a box outside a grocery store.

    Native Gardens

The Cat, 254 Veterans Way, Carmel · verified Aug 7
    See details

Carmel Community Players stages Karen Zacarias’s sharp comedy under the direction of Lori Raffel, with Rich Phipps producing. Newcomers Pablo and Tania Del Valle strike up a friendly rapport with longtime neighbors Virginia and Frank Butley, and everyone agrees the tired chain link divider should make way for a stately wooden fence that seems ideal for Pablo’s professional image and for the scrutiny of judges admiring Frank’s carefully crafted English garden. When the facts about the boundary come to light and Tania’s love of native plants and wildflowers clashes with Frank’s pesticide driven methods, a simple yard upgrade sprouts into a lively battle of taste, territory, and good intentions. The cast features Oscar Otero as Pablo Del Valle, Yolanda Valdivia as Tania Del Valle, Larry Adams as Frank Butley, and Vickie Cornelius Phipps as Virginia Butley, with Jacob Slager and Katie Floyd in the ensemble.
