The 3rd annual Indy Chess Club Championship brings a four-section tournament to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and invites participation from all ages and skill levels, including both Indy Chess members and non-members. The top-performing Indy Chess member in the Open section will have their name engraved on the Indy Chess Cup for the year. This US Chess rated event uses a four round Swiss format for regular ratings. Active US Chess Federation membership and a valid USCF ID are required at registration. All players entered in the first round will be paired and no check-in is needed. Space is limited to 80 competitors. Entry fees are $42 for members and $47 for non-members before the advance deadline, then $52 for members and $57 for non-members afterward. Sections include the Club Championship Open, which is open to Indy Chess members of any rating but requires 1800+ for non-members, plus Upper 1400–1799, Middle 1000–1399, and Lower unrated–999. Published ratings determine placement, with provisional ratings used if otherwise unrated. Players may move up one section if within 100 rating points by making a $20 donation to that section’s first-place prize fund, except that non-members may not move up into the Club Championship. Unrated players may be allowed to play up at the tournament director’s discretion. Prizes are as follows, contingent on a turnout of at least 60 players. The tour sets out from the Viewfinders Sculpture at the pedestrian island where New York Street, Delaware Street, and Mass Ave converge, then concludes at the corner of Mass Ave and Bellefontaine near the Bottleworks District. Marking its 20th year, the Indianapolis Out of the Darkness Walk brings the community together at Military Park in Indianapolis to raise awareness and funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Now in its 53rd year, the Benton House Association presents the Benton House Tour of Homes and Classy Car Show, featuring tours of historic Irvington residences and landmarks along with a showcase of cars of all kinds. The Benton House will be open to explore as a piece of Indianapolis history dating to 1873 and once the home of Butler University president Dr. Allen R. Benton, and the car show on the grounds will include live music and food available for purchase. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of, with day-of purchases accepted in cash at any tour stop or by cash or credit at the Benton House. The tour is one of the two largest annual fundraisers for the Historic Benton House, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and proceeds support ongoing preservation that has previously funded front yard signage, a slate roof, gutters and downspouts, event chairs, landscaping, and foundation repairs. Car show registration is $10, with awards for Best in Show, Crowd Favorite, Most Muscle, Best Paint, Best Interior, and Most Unique, and each registered participant receives a complimentary Home Tour ticket and a poster. Irvington, founded in 1870 and recognized as Indianapolis’s largest historic district, has been highlighted by local publications as a hot neighborhood and an emerging dining destination, and this tour is among the early fall traditions that lead into the community’s well known Halloween festival.
