Here Together: food, stories and sound

    4327 Troost Ave, Kansas City
    See details

Here Together is a shared circle shaped by potluck food, candid conversation, rhythm, and attentive presence. Participants gather on cushions and blankets either in the Creative Empowerment Collective studio with its bamboo floor or at an outdoor spot selected together at the close of the prior gathering, such as a park or a forest trail. The experience begins with intentional arrival, offering a choice between smudging or the warm scent of tulsi, rose, and chai herbs rubbed into the palms. From there, the time flows in a grounded, lively way. Food is exchanged potluck style, stories surface naturally, and sound moves through the circle with snapping, clapping, improvised singing, and at times a song played from a phone when it clearly fits the moment. This is a setting for people seeking genuine company, straightforward talk, and meaningful connection in real time. Some come ready to speak, others to listen, and those arriving solo are welcomed with ease. Children are welcome. Little preparation is needed beyond something to share for the potluck and anything that supports comfortable sitting. Presence comes first, and each person can participate in the rhythm of the gathering in the way that feels right. Many leave feeling seen, and they may also carry home a new idea, a recipe, a fresh perspective, or a story that lingers.

    Trampled By Turtles

The Truman, 601 E Truman Rd, Kansas City · verified Oct 11
    See details

Trampled by Turtles brings its high-velocity acoustic sound to The Truman with special guest Wild Horses. The Duluth group began in 2003 when frontman Dave Simonett shifted to an all-acoustic approach, teaming up with fiddler Ryan Young, bassist Tim Saxhaug, mandolinist Erik Berry, and banjo player Dave Carroll. Drawing on bluegrass and folk while channeling the momentum of rock, they quickly built a catalog that includes early releases like Songs from a Ghost Town, Blue Sky and the Devil, and Trouble. Recognition grew with Duluth, which reached the upper tier of the bluegrass charts and led to major festival appearances. Palomino followed by topping the bluegrass chart and staying there for over a year. Their crossover continued with Stars and Satellites landing on the Billboard 200, and the live recording Live at First Avenue captured their onstage energy. Wild Animals climbed even higher on the album charts, and touring with artists such as Wilco, Lord Huron, Caamp, Mt. Joy, and Deer Tick expanded their audience. More recently, the band released Alpenglow, produced by Jeff Tweedy. This is an all-ages show. Trampled by Turtles has partnered with Backline, with one dollar from every ticket supporting mental health and wellness resources for music industry professionals and their families. The Truman operates as a cashless venue, so plan to use a debit or credit card at bars, the box office, and guest services. Parking is limited, and rideshare services like Uber or Lyft are recommended, with a designated pickup and drop-off area near the entrance. There are currently no specific COVID-19 mandates for this event, and guidance may evolve.

At CrossFit Cerberus in Blue Springs, MO, a kettlebell testing meet welcomes athletes of all experience levels to assess strength, endurance, pacing, and technique. Participants can choose from Pentathlon in standard and short formats, half marathon 30 minute sets, full marathon 60 minute sets, military snatch, kettlebell games using single or double bells, and traditional 1 switch efforts over 5 or 10 minutes. The focus is on measuring progress, gaining platform experience, and setting clear goals for the next training cycle. Every athlete receives a printed, individualized 10 week training plan based on testing results and personal objectives. Kettlebells and chalk are provided by the gym, and personal gear such as wrist guards may be used when permitted by the rules. After the lifting concludes, a pie potluck brings athletes, coaches, judges, and spectators together, with plates, forks, and napkins supplied and any kind of pie welcome. This event is free for members and non members, and these testing meets recur every 10 weeks to offer ongoing opportunities to refine technique, build endurance, and prepare for competition.
