This weekly BNI Chapter One networking meeting brings local business professionals together to grow through referrals, community, and collaboration. Created for young nature enthusiasts ages 1-6, this storytime blends books, songs, and movement and takes place twice a month on the second and fourth Thursdays. Sessions are led by Stepping Stones KC at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, heading outdoors in warm weather and moving indoors during colder months. The meeting location is the Environmental Education Center. The cost is a $5 participant fee in addition to regular admission, and registration is required. A caregiver must be present with each child. Caregivers and siblings pay regular Arboretum admission, and Friends of the Arboretum members receive free admission.

Budget-friendly pricing spans every age and interest: children’s books are 25 cents to 1 dollar, teen and young adult paperbacks and library weeds are 1 dollar each, hardcovers in that category are 2 dollars, and mass market paperbacks are 50 cents. Graphic novels are 3 dollars. Most adult books are 2 to 3 dollars. Music and movies are also available, including CDs at five for 50 cents, LPs at 1 dollar, and DVDs at 1 dollar, with multi-disc sets priced as marked. Video games are 2 dollars. Audiobooks for kids are 1 dollar and other audiobooks are 2 dollars. Some specialty items such as puzzles, display books, and Caldecott titles may have individually marked prices. Friends Members receive a 20 percent discount on all purchases.

Catch the original 1927 silent epic Wings on the big screen at Aztec Shawnee Theater as part of the Americana Summer at the Movies series, sponsored by Shawnee Town 1929. Directed by William A. Wellman, this World War I romance stars Clara Bow with Richard Arlen and Charles “Buddy” Rogers, and includes a memorable cameo by Gary Cooper. Renowned for its authentic aerial battle footage and pioneering real-life cinematography, the film was the first to receive the Academy Award for Outstanding Picture, later known as Best Picture, and it also earned the award for Engineering Effects. Though largely silent, it debuted with a synchronized musical score and sound effects, and a meticulous restoration with a newly recorded soundtrack based on the original score showcases the film’s enduring power. Tickets start at $8, there are no added fees for purchasing in advance, and prices increase on the day of the show. The auditorium seats 182 guests, including 130 traditional seats, 52 seats spread across 14 tables, and four wheelchair spaces. Reserved tables that include admission are available in the VIP area or near the stage while supplies last. A full bar serves domestic and craft beer, spirits and specialty drinks, along with soft drinks, popcorn and snacks. Outside food from nearby restaurants and grills is welcome, but outside beverages are not permitted. Parking is available behind the theater, along surrounding streets and across the way, and food trucks often set up near Transport Brewery, offerings subject to change.

Xtreme Music Bingo at SERV turns classic bingo into a soundtrack-driven competition. A DJ leads the action by spinning popular songs instead of calling numbers, and players mark their cards when they recognize each track. The night unfolds in multiple themed rounds that span eras and genres, from throwbacks and country to party favorites and current hits, with prizes handed out along the way. Participation is free, and the setting suits groups, with large screens, food and drink specials during play, and a lively social vibe. With food, cold drinks, and an energetic atmosphere, expect plenty of sing-alongs and friendly competition from start to finish.

A weekly West Coast Swing night at C.A.S.T.KC is hosted by instructors Jesse Lopez and Ariel Peck. The evening starts with check-in plus open practice and a guided warm-up, continues with three leveled classes from Levels 1 through 3 led by a rotating lineup of Kansas City instructors, and finishes with social dancing to practice what was learned. At Monticello United Methodist Church, this program features a talk that amplifies the firsthand stories of Japanese women who, despite significant hardships, built lives on the prairies of Kansas and cultivated community, relationships, and a resilient cultural identity. Led by Ayako Mizumura with sponsorship from Humanities Kansas, the presentation centers the women’s perspectives as they made a home in what many viewed as the final chapter of their journeys.
