WAM Camp: Summer Break
WAM Camp: Summer Break is a flexible art camp that can be booked one day at a time for children ages 6 to 12. Campers split their time between gallery spaces and the studio, first exploring works from the museum’s collections and exhibitions through guided discussions, then moving into hands-on artmaking where they try different materials and techniques and take on projects with open outcomes. The experience nurtures creativity, builds confidence, and encourages connection, and all supplies are included. Sessions are offered throughout the summer, giving families multiple entry points. Each session costs $30, with a $20 member rate available with a discount code. Registration in advance is required. For questions or to request the member discount code, contact education@wam.org.

A Senior Wednesday program at the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum explores crime in Sedgwick County during the 1800s. Criminal justice scholar John Burchill revisits episodes from Wichita’s early days when some residents stepped outside the law, sharing accounts of Bloody Christmas, newspaper comparisons to the Bender tragedy, the city’s secret police, and stories of gunfights and horse thieves. Burchill is a retired professor of criminal justice with sixteen years of professional experience and twenty-seven years of teaching at Kansas Wesleyan University. He is an author and longtime Humanities Kansas presenter whose topics have included anti horse thief societies, early crime and crime fighters, and the people and politics of nineteenth century Kansas. He also wrote Bullets, Badges, and Bridles, a study of horse thieves and the organizations that pursued them. The program takes place in the museum’s DeVore Auditorium. Seating is capped at 60. Admission for nonmembers is $2, and annual memberships start at $25. Light refreshments are provided beforehand by the Friends of the Historical Museum. A museum tour follows the presentation.

Start working toward a Kansas driver’s license with an in-person drivers education class at ICT North Star Driving Academy. The course combines 8 hours of classroom learning with 6 to 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, and the training vehicle is provided by the academy. At the end of the classroom portion, students take a 30-question written test to earn a paper instructional permit and move into the driving sessions. After the behind-the-wheel training, a comprehensive driving exam is required to receive a Certificate of Completion that can be presented at the DMV when eligible for a Kansas license. An enrollment appointment is required to reserve a spot. A $150 non-refundable deposit and enrollment paperwork must be completed in person before the course. Bring two forms of identification, with a Social Security card and birth certificate preferred. Students must be at least 14 years old, and a parent or guardian must attend the enrollment appointment for those under 16 and is encouraged for those under 18. The night culminates in an after-hours rave with alcohol available during that portion of the event. A memorial motorcycle run honoring TuffNut brings riders together for a day of camaraderie, riding, and community support. During tryouts, coaches will evaluate gymnastics and dance ability and will also consider focus, work ethic, attitude, and class attendance. A skills list is available in the event posts. Selected athletes must remain enrolled in a class or lesson at Acrobatic Academy, attend all practices and performances, and commit to the full season. The tryout fee is $15 with early registration and $20 afterward. The team class fee is $70 per month in addition to existing class tuition. Set in downtown Wichita inside the city’s original 1890 City Hall, the museum presents many exhibits and thousands of artifacts that share the story of local history. The Museum Store carries books, souvenirs, and other locally themed gifts. Regular admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children, while members enjoy free entry at all times and all visitors receive free admission on Sundays. The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.

The 9th annual Orie’s Garlic Fest fills Wichita’s historic Old Town with garlicky food and drinks, inventive garlic themed goods, and local live music.
