HOPE Ministries of Baton Rouge marks 23 years of service with a community celebration. Friends, supporters, partners, and neighbors are welcome to gather for birthday cake, sweet treats, and refreshments, along with tours of the facility. The program spotlights client success stories and recent updates, and it offers time to connect with staff, supporters, and community partners. Guests can learn how the organization helps individuals and families work toward stability and self-sufficiency through services such as food assistance, workforce development, and financial coaching. This milestone offers a chance to reflect on what has been achieved together and to look ahead to the future. Attendees may bring a nonperishable food donation or make a financial gift in honor of the occasion.

This support group meets at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, Essen location. It offers a welcoming space to talk through questions, concerns, and emotions while connecting with others on a similar path. There is no charge to attend. GWAR returns to Chelsea’s with BRAT for a heavy music performance. Advance tickets are $35, with the price increasing to $40 on the day of the show. LAD Deaf Focus is hosting an inclusive ASL social at Torchy’s Tacos as an immersion experience for the community. Deaf, DeafBlind, hard of hearing and hearing participants, including those learning ASL and Deaf professionals, are welcome. Expect a casual meet and greet conducted in American Sign Language, with chances to connect with new and familiar faces, enjoy tacos, and practice communication in a visual language rich setting. Attendees are encouraged to be Deaf friendly, observe respectfully, learn from others, and build skills while gaining insight into Deaf culture. The event also provides opportunities for networking. Attendance varies from one gathering to the next.

Anne leads an informative and fun cooking class devoted to paella, guiding participants through the essentials of this classic Spanish rice dish. Learn how to prepare homemade stock and sofrito, choose Bomba rice and the right pan, and work with saffron. The lesson covers which tasks can be done in advance, how flavor builds in the pan, and how to control heat. Expect to rely on visual and audio cues as you practice techniques that make paella easier to recreate at home, including achieving the prized crispy layer on the bottom. The menu features several styles, including Valenciana, seafood, mixed, and vegetarian variations. The session concludes with a paella buffet. Participants receive a packet of recipes and a 15 percent shopping discount. This class is for ages 16 and up. Teen participants must attend with an adult, and each person needs a purchased seat. There are no refunds. Transfers to another class are available if requested at least seven working days before the class, and after that window transfers are not available. If you cannot attend, you may give your spot to someone else.

At The Dinner Detective, a true crime murder mystery dinner puts you at the center of a comedic yet challenging case while you enjoy a full meal. The culprit hides in plain sight somewhere in the room, and at any moment you could find yourself tagged as a prime suspect. This immersive format departs from typical whodunits, unfolding in the present and in real time, with performers mingling among the audience to keep the clues—and the laughter—coming. Expect a lively, social, and interactive evening for adults, with a track record of nationwide performances since 2004 and plenty of intrigue and unscripted surprises along the way.

University United Methodist Church will host a full-band concert in the sanctuary featuring the nationally touring duo Clay Parker and Jodi James, with local musician and UUMC youth member Katie Love opening. This community gathering is open to everyone, and half of all proceeds will support Front Yard Bikes, a Baton Rouge nonprofit that mentors kids through hands-on programs like bike repair, gardening, cooking, welding, construction, tutoring, and plenty of fun. Suggested contributions are $20 per individual, $50 per family, and $10 for students, payable in cash or online at the event. All are welcome regardless of ability to pay. Clay Parker and Jodi James are known for clear harmonies and plainspoken lyrics that draw on folk traditions while reaching into jazz, rock, and contemporary folk. They have performed across the country in intimate rooms, theaters, and major festivals, including multiple appearances at New Orleans Jazz Fest. Rolling Stone has spotlighted them among notable emerging country acts, though their current sound defies any single label. Their latest release is titled Your Very Own Dream. Katie Love, a long-time member of the church and an emerging contemporary folk artist, released her debut album Time for Moving On and celebrated with a sold-out hometown release show before continuing to build momentum locally. Recent out-of-state stops included an opener for Terry Klein at NeWorlDeli in Austin and a co-headline with Eric Schmitt at Kojak’s Cafe in Houston. Her music has drawn comparisons to Jason Isbell and early Brandi Carlile, and she is now developing a second album with a full band.
