Benefiting Christian & Brian’s House, this golf tournament supports a sober home founded in 2020 to honor Christian Diaz and Brian Metzger. With continued community support, the house has grown into a premier sober home in the region and has helped hundreds of men find stability and support in recovery. As the biggest annual fundraiser, the tournament advances this mission and the goal of opening a women’s house in the area. Designed for relatives, friends and partners of adults living with mental health conditions, this free, eight-session course blends education with practical tools. Participants receive clear information about anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other conditions, and develop skills in communication and problem solving while exploring treatment options and the recovery process. The goal is to expand understanding, strengthen advocacy abilities and support participants' own well-being. Sessions are led by trained family members who have supported a loved one, and the curriculum is grounded in research.

He devoted nearly half a century to the West Springfield Lions Club, served four terms as president, and was recognized as a Melvin Jones Fellow for humanitarian service. Many also knew him through music. For more than forty years he played the bagpipes with the Springfield Kiltie Band, performed at the John Boyle O’Reilly Club, and helped bring people together at local social events. The 7th Annual Golf Tournament for Jessy’s Fight brings golfers together at the Country Club of Wilbraham to support cancer care and community. The mission is twofold. Funds raised benefit the D’Amour Center for Cancer Care within the Baystate Health Foundation, and the tournament offers a chance for people to gather and set aside the worries that come with cancer. The event is rooted in Jessy’s story. At 27 she learned that a brain tumor was cancerous, leaned on her husband Sully, and turned that shock into a commitment to help others find hope. With the strength of family, friends, and the community, she celebrates seven years cancer free and continues routine scans. The tournament also honors the memory of Jessy’s mother, Sandra T. Cote, who passed in 2021 after battling cancer. Memorial donations in Sandy’s name will be accepted. It is a day on the course focused on support, resilience, and giving hope.

Return to Self: The Seeker’s Path offers an immersive Yoga and Ayurveda journey focused on personal exploration rather than certification. The Autumn meeting of the Agawam Historical Association at the Captain Charles Leonard House features historical archaeologist Bob Drinkwater exploring who crafted the gravestones in Agawam’s old burying grounds. Drawing on research from his recent book about gravestone carvers in western Massachusetts from about 1720 to 1850, he will highlight examples found in the town’s historic cemeteries, which include the resting places of nearly five dozen veterans of the American Revolution. Drinkwater holds an MA in anthropology from UMass Amherst and has spent more than forty years documenting and studying eighteenth and early nineteenth century gravestones and the stonecutters who made them across western Massachusetts, identifying many carvers from the Connecticut River Valley. A founding member of the Association for Gravestone Studies, he has published in its journals, helped organize and present at conferences, and served as President and Trustee. This event is free and open to the public.

Candlelight transforms the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield into an intimate setting for a string quartet to reinterpret iconic 80s rock anthems by candlelight. As summer birds depart and migrants from farther north arrive for winter, this relaxed bird walk with Martha (Marti) Kane focuses on spotting species and contributing observations to an eBird count. Beginners are welcome and no prior experience is required. Bring binoculars if you have them. A Westfield native, Kane spent much of her career in North Carolina training park rangers and managing a nature preserve, and she has recently returned to the area. She enjoys conducting eBird counts at local parks and monitoring nest boxes for bluebirds and other cavity-nesting songbirds. This program is part of eight free Nature Workshops offered by Stanley Park and the Greater Westfield Community in the 229-acre Frank Stanley Beveridge Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary. Unless otherwise noted, walks and workshops meet at the sanctuary’s main entrance sign across from the recreation field. Walks will be canceled in the event of heavy rain. Wear hiking attire and sturdy footwear, and consider bringing water, field guides, binoculars, and a camera.

Authors, poets, and publishers come together for Massachusetts’ longest-running writers workshop as WriteAngles, a Straw Dog Writers Guild conference, takes place at Bay Path University.
