As summer birds depart and migrants from farther north arrive for winter, this relaxed bird walk with Martha (Marti) Kane focuses on spotting species and contributing observations to an eBird count. Beginners are welcome and no prior experience is required. Bring binoculars if you have them. A Westfield native, Kane spent much of her career in North Carolina training park rangers and managing a nature preserve, and she has recently returned to the area. She enjoys conducting eBird counts at local parks and monitoring nest boxes for bluebirds and other cavity-nesting songbirds. This program is part of eight free Nature Workshops offered by Stanley Park and the Greater Westfield Community in the 229-acre Frank Stanley Beveridge Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary. Unless otherwise noted, walks and workshops meet at the sanctuary’s main entrance sign across from the recreation field. Walks will be canceled in the event of heavy rain. Wear hiking attire and sturdy footwear, and consider bringing water, field guides, binoculars, and a camera.

As a fall bonus, participants will make leaf rubbings and leaf prints using washable watercolors and tempera paints. All supplies are provided for the family journal as well as the leaf rubbings and prints. Leslie’s background blends contemplative practice, librarianship, and outdoor education. She has published two books of nature poetry, with work featured in Artemis Journal and in exhibits and contests from Connecticut to Maine and beyond, and she leads mindful nature journaling and nature-inspired art classes throughout Connecticut and online, including painting with natural objects, watercolor, acrylics, and poetry.

Hitchcock Harvest celebrates sustainability with local food and drinks in the Brew Garden and hands-on learning throughout the Hitchcock Center, rain or shine. For more than 60 years, the Hitchcock Center has advanced environmental education in the Valley, and this gathering highlights that legacy through interactive stations inspired by the Living Building petals: Place, Water, Energy, Health and Happiness, Materials, Equity, and Beauty. Attendees can see how local innovators and the Center are shaping a resilient future, respond to prompts at each station and add reflections to a collaborative art piece. Collecting a stamp from all seven stations earns a full drink and an entry into a raffle.

The four-day Polyphony Fest concludes with a concert highlighting harmony-rich traditions from around the globe. The program features Culomba, special guest musicians, and festival participants who have spent the weekend learning songs from diverse lineages. DSP Shows presents a night of earthy Delta swamp blues as Tab Benoit brings the Soul of the Swamp Tour to the Academy of Music Theatre, with Ghalia Volt. A four-time Grammy nominee and five-time Blues Music Award winner, including BB King Entertainer of the Year twice, Benoit has spent more than three decades building a devoted following for his raw guitar work and unmistakable voice. After a 13-year break from recording, he returned with I Hear Thunder on his Whiskey Bayou Records label, earning his first Billboard number one in over 30 years. His 2013 album Medicine, co-produced with Anders Osborne for Concord International, collected three Blues Music Awards. He is also a member of The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. Beyond the stage, Benoit champions the health of his home state’s wetlands. He founded Voice of the Wetlands, received the Governor’s Award for Conservationist of the Year from the Louisiana Wildlife Federation, and appeared in the iMax film Hurricane on the Bayou. This immersive weekend course explores ways of working with anxiety through the principles of Tibetan medicine with Dr. Mary Ryan, an Oxford-educated medical anthropologist licensed in both Tibetan and Chinese medicine. Drawing on years of clinical study in Dharamsala, she shares case stories from her book to introduce the traditional concept of rlung, a Tibetan term for the wind humor understood to underlie anxious states. Participants practice accessible, embodied tools that include Tibetan breathing, self-assessment of constitution, therapeutic approaches to food, self-massage, a Medicine Buddha meditation, and a closing journaling session that supports mental hygiene. The program welcomes those with no prior background in Tibetan medicine. Dr. Ryan earned MSc and PhD degrees from Oxford University in human biology and medical anthropology. Her postdoctoral work at Harvard examined refugee mental health and the effectiveness of Tibetan medical treatments for PTSD. Collaboration at Harvard on Tibetan medicine and consciousness research with H.H. the Dalai Lama inspired her to write about healing anxiety in response to the widespread anxiety she witnessed. The 30th Annual Simsbury River Run has been rescheduled in response to a forecasted Nor'easter and strong winds. Organizers chose to prioritize the well-being of runners, volunteers, spectators, families, vendors, and community partners by moving the event to a new date. Taking place in Simsbury, Connecticut, the program features USATF certified 5k and 10k road races along with 1 mile and 1/2 mile races for kids. The course is very flat, following smooth roads that pass parks, the Farmington River, scenic farms, and residential neighborhoods. The Brooklyn band is led by Benin-born singer and guitarist Leon Ligan-Majek, known as Kaleta, who spent his youth in Lagos, Nigeria. His distinctive guitar work led to tours and recording with Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, and Lauryn Hill. After early performances in church in the late 1970s, he joined King Sunny Ade’s group, then toured the world with Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80 throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s.
