With more than six decades of tropical fish keeping and a past home fishroom that ran 60 aquariums for over a decade, Rit brings deep, hands-on experience. He has presented to more than 36 aquarium clubs across the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Mexico, and Holland, and helped shape the hobby as co-founder and first president of the Northeast Livebearers Association, as well as a leader within the American Livebearers Association. His contributions have been recognized with the Betty Meuller Honor from the Northeast Council of Aquarium Societies, the designation of Fellow of the American Livebearers Association, and the ALA Grand Master Breeder Award for successfully breeding 100 livebearer species. The program explores the history and diversity of livebearers, proven breeding approaches, and where the hobby is heading. Attendees can enjoy free pizza and drinks, followed by an auction with chances to bring home something special for their aquariums. Lin is an independent artist, practice-led researcher, writer, and cultural worker whose interspecies and socially engaged projects honor beloved places and seed stories that move beyond a single worldview. A former Goddard College MFA faculty member for nearly two decades until the school’s closure in 2024, she holds a PhD in Environmental Studies from Antioch University New England and works as a narrative coach for public health organizations in Massachusetts. Her first play, Phoenix in the HolyLand, supports global peace efforts that confront ecocide and genocide, and her writing appears in Writing the Land anthologies as well as the collections Ecological and Social Healing: Multicultural Women’s Voices and Contemplative Practices and Acts of Resistance in Higher Education: Narratives Toward Wholeness. Teen Open Studio is a relaxed, free series where teens ages 13 to 17 can socialize and create in a 13,000 square foot makerspace in Orange, MA. Each session spotlights a different shop or medium, inviting participants to discover what materials can do. Past and upcoming themes in the series include cyanotype printing on textiles, polymer clay creatures, spiked leather bracelets and chokers, bleach printing, and for October, ear and tail making. The Autumn meeting of the Agawam Historical Association features a talk by historical archaeologist Bob Drinkwater that looks at the makers behind the gravestones found in Agawam’s oldest burial grounds. Drawing on his recent book about western Massachusetts carvers active from the early 1700s to the mid 1800s, he will connect distinctive carving styles to specific artisans and highlight examples in Agawam’s historic cemeteries, where nearly five dozen Revolutionary War veterans are interred. Drinkwater holds an MA in anthropology from UMass Amherst and has spent more than four decades documenting, photographing, and reporting on eighteenth and early nineteenth century gravestones and the stonecutters of the Connecticut River Valley. As a charter member of the Association for Gravestone Studies, he has published scholarly articles, organized and presented at conferences, and served in leadership roles. Guided by the maps of 5Rhythms, the session offers instruction and simple exercises that invite you into a movement practice with no set choreography. Rooted in the work of Gabrielle Roth, this approach welcomes every body and explores the five rhythms of flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical, and stillness, not to perfect them but to receive what each has to offer. Expect time to arrive in your body and move on your own, along with musical guidance and occasional verbal cues. You may be invited to deepen a solo dance, connect with a partner for a short or longer exchange, or move with the whole room. Each class is different because you, the group, and the teacher bring something new every time, and the rhythms open many movement landscapes. As summer birds depart and migrants from farther north arrive for winter, this relaxed bird walk with Martha (Marti) Kane focuses on spotting species and contributing observations to an eBird count. Beginners are welcome and no prior experience is required. Bring binoculars if you have them. A Westfield native, Kane spent much of her career in North Carolina training park rangers and managing a nature preserve, and she has recently returned to the area. She enjoys conducting eBird counts at local parks and monitoring nest boxes for bluebirds and other cavity-nesting songbirds. This program is part of eight free Nature Workshops offered by Stanley Park and the Greater Westfield Community in the 229-acre Frank Stanley Beveridge Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary. Unless otherwise noted, walks and workshops meet at the sanctuary’s main entrance sign across from the recreation field. Walks will be canceled in the event of heavy rain. Wear hiking attire and sturdy footwear, and consider bringing water, field guides, binoculars, and a camera.

The four-day Polyphony Fest concludes with a concert highlighting harmony-rich traditions from around the globe. Culomba is a six-voice ensemble devoted to close harmonies across American folk, Georgian, Corsican, and Balkan styles, renaissance polyphony, and original compositions. DSP Shows presents a night of earthy Delta swamp blues as Tab Benoit brings the Soul of the Swamp Tour to the Academy of Music Theatre, with Ghalia Volt. A four-time Grammy nominee and five-time Blues Music Award winner, including BB King Entertainer of the Year twice, Benoit has spent more than three decades building a devoted following for his raw guitar work and unmistakable voice. After a 13-year break from recording, he returned with I Hear Thunder on his Whiskey Bayou Records label, earning his first Billboard number one in over 30 years. His 2013 album Medicine, co-produced with Anders Osborne for Concord International, collected three Blues Music Awards. He is also a member of The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. Beyond the stage, Benoit champions the health of his home state’s wetlands. He founded Voice of the Wetlands, received the Governor’s Award for Conservationist of the Year from the Louisiana Wildlife Federation, and appeared in the iMax film Hurricane on the Bayou. Over the years he has worked alongside artists such as Junior Wells, George Porter Jr, Dr. John, Willie Nelson, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Billy Joe Shaver, Maria Muldaur, James Cotton, Cyril Neville, Kenny Aronoff, Allen Toussaint, Kim Wilson, Jimmy Thackery, Kenny Neal, Chris Layton, Ivan Neville, Jimmy Hall, Jim Lauderdale, Anders Osborne, and Alvin Youngblood Hart. Ghalia Volt adds a high-voltage jolt as a one woman band, driving guitar and foot-drums with grit and soul. Born in Belgium and raised on the streets of Brussels, she honed her craft busking before immersing herself in the blues of the American South. Her album Shout Sister Shout! reached number two on the Billboard Blues Chart, marking a third straight Top 3 release. She has appeared at festivals including New Orleans’ Jazz Fest and Telluride Blues & Brews, and has shared bills with Tab Benoit, Devon Allman, and Buddy Guy. Formed in 2012 around a kitchen table in Bristol, the trio blends maritime tradition with sharp humor, internet-savvy creativity and original songwriting. Their version of Wellerman caught fire on TikTok in 2021, fueling the ShantyTok wave and helping spark a worldwide return to sea shanties. Their catalogue spans ambitious projects like Pieces of Eight, which delivered an EP each month for eight months and concluded with their tenth album, as well as the fan-funded Voyage, paired with a book of stories, artwork and lyrics and now counting millions of streams. The latest release, Ends of the Earth, pushes their trademark vocal sound into fresh territory, from tales of eighteenth century crime to creatures roaming the American wilds, with rich harmonies and driving folk rock. The Brooklyn band is led by Benin-born singer and guitarist Leon Ligan-Majek, known as Kaleta, who spent his youth in Lagos, Nigeria. His distinctive guitar work led to tours and recording with Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, and Lauryn Hill. After early performances in church in the late 1970s, he joined King Sunny Ade’s group, then toured the world with Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80 throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s. Now based in New York City, he has guided Super Yamba Band since 2017. Their debut album, Mèdaho, released by Ubiquity Records, channels gritty, psychedelic textures inspired by the sounds that moved Kaleta in 1970s Benin. The title means big brother, elder, or teacher, paying tribute to his late brother who introduced him to funk and soul. Bandcamp highlighted the record among the summer 2019 standouts, and two songs appeared in the ABC and Hulu series High Fidelity featuring Zoe Kravitz. The group’s presence across the United States has grown with appearances at major festivals and venues, including a 2019 set at the Apollo, a segment on Adult Swim’s FishCenter Live, and a moment on VICELAND when Action Bronson paused his own show to hear more. Following a breakout performance at Paste Magazine’s Emerging Music Festival in New York City, Afropop Worldwide praised Kaleta’s James Brown–style vocal flourishes.

Raised in New Orleans after being born in Miami during World War II, he began making music as a child and learned early chords on a family ukulele. Inspired by artists like Lightnin’ Hopkins and Mississippi John Hurt, he developed a beat driven fingerpicking style anchored by the steady rhythm of his tapping feet. Encouraged by Eric von Schmidt, he moved to Boston in the 1960s, building lasting ties with fellow musicians including Bonnie Raitt, who later recorded his songs Love You Like a Man and I Feel the Same. His catalog spans pivotal early releases on Poppy Records through decades of touring, live recordings, and studio albums. Highlights include a live set captured across the U.S. and Ireland, a Folk Alliance Song of the Year for Seems So Real, covers of his work by Diana Krall, and Emmylou Harris recording Slow Surprise for The Horse Whisperer. His song I Am the Ride inspired the independent film The Ride, for which he composed the score, and Drive You Home Again received four stars from Rolling Stone. A Stern Army and IFPA pinball tournament presented by Game Changer Amusements, in collaboration with The Shortstop Bar & Grill and Par 4 The Course. This December edition of the monthly series welcomes players of all ages and skill levels and features prizes and giveaways. The format includes two hours of match play qualifying followed by a ladder finals, with the number of finalists based on attendance.
