This class offers a deep look at the Egyptian Books of the Dead as a living tradition developed over millennia. It follows the arc of Egypt’s funerary and afterlife literature from the earliest Pyramid Texts to the Coffin Texts and the corpus now called the Book of the Dead. Discussion centers on the worldview within these writings, including concepts of the soul, the afterlife, moral balance, judgment, transformation, and the soul’s passage through the Duat. It considers how spells, hymns, and sacred utterances worked not only as funerary rites but as means of spiritual navigation and empowerment. The program also addresses how these works endure today through modern scholarship and the digital preservation of ancient papyri, with attention to the roles of museums, archives, and digital humanities projects in keeping them accessible. It is suited to those drawn to the mysteries of death, transformation, and sacred text, and no prior knowledge is required, only curiosity and respect. Seating is limited because gatherings are currently held at a private residence in Providence, RI, and advance reservations are requested. Plans for a future brick-and-mortar location with an esoteric library are underway, with more information to come.
