    Wilderness Survival 1

Townsend Public Library, 12 Dudley Rd, Townsend · verified Oct 2
    See details

Get grounded in essential outdoor know-how with an introductory wilderness survival class focused on staying warm, hydrated, and nourished in the backcountry. Designed for hikers, backpackers, hunters, trail runners, and anyone eager to spend more time outside, it builds confidence, expands practical knowledge, and strengthens a personal connection to nature. Wilderness Survival 1 can be taken on its own or as part of the OEWS Alula Certification path, and successful completion fulfills the prerequisites for Wilderness Survival 2 or 3. Participants receive an OEWS logo patch along with a feather patch at the end. Training covers careful use, sharpening, and safety of carving tools, five fundamental knots, fire making with modern ignition methods, rabbit stick technique, shelter construction with contemporary gear, methods for disinfecting water, smart clothing choices for conditions, foraging guidelines and ethics, how to assemble a dependable survival kit, planning and mindset for challenging scenarios, and navigation with map and compass. Students should bring an OEWS Basic, Complete, or Ultimate Survival Kit or an equivalent setup, with the Complete Kit suggested for a single-package solution. Wear clothing suited to weather and insects, pack plenty of water plus extra to put out fires, bring lunch and snacks, a seat such as a camping chair, a baseplate compass, and an optional notebook and pen for taking notes. At minimum, plan to have a carving tool, a ferro rod or matches, a poncho or large trash bag, about 12 feet of rope, and whatever you need for personal comfort and safety. Loaner items are available, and carving tools and fire starters can be purchased at the start of class. The Complete Kit can be paired with a compass and poncho for a strong starter setup, and all suggested gear has been vetted by the instructional team. Instruction happens entirely outdoors in a forest setting a short walk from parking, so dress for the weather, especially cold conditions, and pack extra layers. Those interested in a specialized carving tool may look into The Talon, a design by lead instructor Tim Swanson, handmade by Jackson Mills of Freedom Forge with custom handle and sheath options. Builds typically take a few weeks and often cost around 200 dollars, depending on customization. The class is oriented toward adults, though mature minors are welcome at a parent’s discretion. Anyone under 18 must attend with a parent or guardian. One ticket applies to one participant regardless of age. Sessions run year round, entirely outside, and proceed rain or shine. If conditions are unsafe, the class will be canceled and students can reschedule. Instruction is led by Tim Swanson, founder and lead instructor of Owl Eyes Wilderness Survival, alongside apprentices and co-instructors.

Participants will observe and document flora and fauna at spots throughout the woods, contributing to Earthwise Aware’s biodiversity and climate studies on how climate change affects the timing of life cycle stages in local species. The outing centers on careful observation, listening, and learning from the landscape. Because the route may cross sensitive habitat, pets should stay at home. Families are encouraged to consider whether the format suits their children, as the walk is lengthy and asks everyone to remain with the group and move quietly and attentively. Attendance is capped to keep the impact low on wildlife and habitats. If plans change, cancel ahead of time so a waitlisted participant can take the spot.

Albermarle Field, 250 Albemarle Rd, Newton
    See details

At Albermarle Field, the 6th Annual Indigenous Peoples Day Newton Ceremonial Celebration brings people together to honor the cultures, histories, resilience, and living traditions of Indigenous Peoples. It is the largest Indigenous-led ceremonial celebration in Massachusetts. The theme, Medicines of the Lands: Healing Through Ancestral Plants, highlights enduring relationships with the natural world, where plants offer nourishment, healing, ceremony, and guidance, and where knowledge is grounded in observation, reciprocity, and responsibility. Attendees can experience an opening Indigenous ceremony and a sacred fire, traditional drum groups, music and dance, storytelling, and presentations led by tribal representatives and cultural educators. Teachings on Indigenous plant medicines and traditional ecological knowledge are shared alongside demonstrations by artists, an Indigenous artisan marketplace, Indigenous food vendors, educational exhibits, and activities for children. The event includes a sensory-friendly space and is accessible, and community organizations will be present. Everyone is welcome, and admission is free to the public. Respect for cultural protocols is central to the day. Guests are asked to request permission before photographing ceremonies, sacred spaces, or individuals, to recognize that some songs, stories, medicines, and ceremonies are not meant to be taught or shared outside their original contexts, to support Indigenous artists, educators, authors, and businesses by purchasing directly from them, to care for the land and leave no trace, and to listen with openness and humility. Teachings are offered for education and cultural understanding and are not to be appropriated, commercialized, misrepresented, or removed from their cultural context. Not every teaching is intended for practice beyond the communities from which it comes. Respect includes listening, seeking permission when appropriate, acknowledging the Indigenous communities who have protected this knowledge, and uplifting Indigenous voices. The celebration is hosted by H.U.A.H., Mothers Path to Ancestors, Inc., the organizer of Indigenous Peoples Day Newton. The organization focuses on education, celebration, and uplift of Indigenous cultures, creating opportunities for Indigenous communities to share their voices, traditions, and living histories with the broader public while honoring the First Peoples of these lands and working toward respect, truth, relationship, and healing.

    Tricky

The Sinclair, 52 Church St, Cambridge · verified Oct 2
    See details

Tricky brings his singular sound to The Sinclair for an all ages performance. The moment aligns with Different When It’s Silent, his first release under his own name in six years, arriving after a run of projects on his False Idols label that include Lonely Guest with contributors such as Oh Land, Marta Złakowska, Joe Talbot, Murkage Dave, Paul Smith, and Lee Scratch Perry, Fifteen Days with producer Mike Theis under the name Theis Thaws, and a joint album with Marta last year. The new material reflects a period marked by personal loss and a desire to work quietly, a direction that shifted when manager Alan McGee encouraged presenting these songs as a Tricky album. On the record, Bristol singer Mitch Sanders leads most of the vocals, with additional appearances by Red Run Rambo and Christian Pattemore. The set of songs spans guitar grit, shadowy electronics, and moments colored by strings and an operatic voice, and it includes a reimagined version of Dope Lemon’s Marinade. Marta joins Tricky on the closing track Out of Place. True to form, he continues to spotlight emerging voices from his community. In addition, twenty five cents from each ticket supports The Shout Syndicate, a Boston based volunteer effort that funds youth led arts programs through The Boston Foundation in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture.

Crawford Memorial United Methodist Church to host the October Adoption Event

Crawford Memorial UMC, 34 Dix St, Winchester · verified Oct 9
    See details

Crawford Memorial United Methodist Church hosts a Last Hope K9 Rescue adoption event featuring adoptable dogs. An application on file is required to enter the adoption area, and it can be completed in advance or upon arrival. Fully approved adopters are admitted earlier than those with applications still in process. To ensure there is enough time to complete placements and deposits, adoption and deposit conversations conclude shortly before the event ends. Dogs are available on a first come, first served basis, so arriving early is recommended if there is a specific pup you hope to meet. Fully approved attendees with no pets or additional humans at home may be able to adopt and bring a dog home the same day. Please bring a 6 foot non retractable leash. Fully approved attendees who have pets or additional household members, as well as those with applications in process, can place a $100 deposit toward the final adoption fee if they make a connection. Deposits hold for 7 days to allow for meet and greets and welcoming a new dog home, and in most circumstances deposits made while an application is being expedited are non refundable. For safety, children under 5 must be in strollers or held, and groups with children under 10 will be provided a family escort. Only adoptable dogs are permitted inside the event space. If there are pets at home, personality matches will be discussed and a follow up meet and greet will be scheduled off site, since on site introductions are not available. If any household members have travel plans in the three weeks following the event, browsing is welcome, but please wait to pursue a deposit or adoption until everyone has returned, as dogs cannot be held in foster homes and successful transitions require a stable schedule.

    See details

Grammy-winning Panamanian pianist and Doris Duke Artist Danilo Pérez leads a trio with Ben Street on bass and Adam Cruz on drums, revisiting his landmark PanaMonk project, a 1996 album that helped shape Latin jazz. The group reimagines Thelonious Monk’s compositions through a Caribbean perspective with rhythmic drive and lyrical focus. DownBeat has described PanaMonk as one of the most important jazz piano recordings, and a Lincoln Center performance of this material drew praise from The New York Times for its exhilaration, emotional resonance, and assured lyricism. Across more than three decades, Pérez has been celebrated as a major creative voice in contemporary music. Rooted in jazz, his Global Jazz approach blends Panamanian heritage, Latin American folk traditions, West African rhythms, and touches of European impressionism to create a borderless, multidimensional sound. His discography spans a dozen albums, and his honors include the Doris Duke Artist Award, the United States Fellowship, and the Smithsonian Legacy Award. He has also spent nearly two decades in the Wayne Shorter Quartet with John Patitucci and Brian Blade, appearing on Blue Note’s EMANON, which earned the 2019 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. This program centers on the PanaMonk repertoire interpreted by three seasoned improvisers.

Fragrant, high quality tea will be served, with steady guidance and plenty of space for quiet reflection. Please plan to arrive about 15 minutes early to check in at Moonlight & Mindfulness inside The Hive Public Market in Lowell, after which you will be directed to the workshop area. The Jury Experience – The Burning House Case | Boston

Regent Theatre Arlington, 7 Medford St, Arlington · verified Oct 4
    See details

An immersive courtroom drama from Law&Crime places the audience in the jury box, turning a night at the theater into a high-stakes deliberation. As the Burning House case unfolds, attendees listen to testimony, examine evidence, and vote at decisive moments that can alter the course of the trial, with the final verdict determined by the crowd. This is not a passive show... the justice delivered comes from the people in the seats. The case centers on wedding planner Mary Barrett and her boyfriend, firefighter Danny Cullen. After Mary breaks years of sobriety during a party and a fierce argument follows, Danny is later found dead and his home is destroyed by fire. Angry messages from Mary, traces of accelerant in her car, and a night she can barely recall all seem incriminating. Yet unanswered questions muddy the picture. Danny suffered a serious head injury before the fire, key security footage is missing, and the arson investigator, Mikey Doyle, was Danny’s close friend and had clashed with him over secret messages with Mary. The mystery asks whether Mary set the blaze in a drunken rage or whether the investigator is concealing his own role. The experience includes themes of violent and accidental death, relapse and addiction, and intense domestic conflict, with emotionally charged moments and a detailed discussion of a fatal fire. Presented at Regent Theatre Arlington. Seating is general admission within the zone purchased. The venue is wheelchair accessible with a designated wheelchair area. It is suitable for ages 12 and up, and anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. An on-site bar serves drinks and snacks and accepts cash only. Photography and recording are permitted without flash, and there are no strobe effects. Service animals are welcome. Groups of thirty or more can arrange group or private show options, and guests who require assistance may be eligible for a complimentary companion pass with appropriate documentation.

Emily St. John Mandel at First Parish Church

First Parish Church 1446 Massachusetts Ave. Cambridge, MA 02138, 3 Church St, Cambridge
    See details

Harvard Book Store hosts Emily St. John Mandel, the author of six novels including "Sea of Tranquility", "The Glass Hotel", and "Station Eleven", for a conversation about her new novel, "Exit Party". She will speak with Allegra Goodman, the national bestselling author of "Isola" and the recent book "This Is Not About Us". Tickets include entry for one and a hardcover copy of "Exit Party" signed in advance. Books bundled with tickets must be picked up at the venue on the night of the event and are not available for in-store pickup beforehand. If a book-included ticket holder cannot attend, the book may be collected at Harvard Book Store for up to 30 days after the event, after which the offer expires. Signed copies are not guaranteed for those who do not attend. About "Exit Party": The writer of "Station Eleven" and "Sea of Tranquility" returns with a sweeping story of doubles, shadow worlds, and fractured timelines. In Los Angeles in 2031, during the first spring after the United States has collapsed, peacekeepers leave the city, jacarandas bloom, and the curfew lifts. Ari Waker and her roommate traverse Silverlake past bomb-sniffing dogs, makeshift encampments, and Red Cross tents to reach a raucous apartment party where the room hums with dancing and someone shimmers in a silver, tinfoil-like dress. Then everything tilts... a bewildered twin appears and the host, Kareem, vanishes. Ari’s search for what happened threads through a future America splintered by civil war, a cliffside resort in Greece where arms dealers hide in elegance, a domed Paris, and a settlement on the moon. The novel probes the cost of safety, the dangers of pervasive surveillance, and the resilience required in times of upheaval. Emily St. John Mandel’s "Sea of Tranquility" has been translated into 25 languages and was named among President Barack Obama’s favorite books of 2022. "The Glass Hotel" also appeared on his list, was shortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, and has been translated into 26 languages. "Station Eleven" was a finalist for the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award, won the 2015 Arthur C. Clarke Award, has been translated into 36 languages, and was adapted as a limited series on HBO Max. She lives in New York City and Los Angeles. Allegra Goodman is the author of seven novels, including the national bestseller "Isola", a Reese’s Book Club pick, as well as two short story collections and a novel for young readers. Her fiction has appeared in The New Yorker and has been selected for The O. Henry Awards and Best American Short Stories. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

    Intro to Throwing - November

Old School Clay and Ceramics, 145 Main Street, Groton · verified Oct 4
    See details

Curious about the potter’s wheel without wanting a long commitment? This two-session workshop offers a straightforward introduction. The first class focuses on throwing with all the clay you want, and the following week you return to glaze what you made. From everything created during the initial two-hour session, choose one piece to keep and glaze at the second class. You may also select four pieces for a $4 fee per pot. The follow-up glazing session takes about an hour, depending on how many pieces you keep. Enrollment is limited to four students, allowing time for individual guidance. It is a practical way to find out if working with clay is a good fit before investing in a longer course. Consider bringing family or friends and pairing the experience with dinner at one of Groton’s restaurants. Please review the studio rules before committing to this workshop.

ADULT. & A Place To Bury Strangers

The Sinclair, 52 Church St, Cambridge
    See details

ADULT. and A Place To Bury Strangers share the stage at The Sinclair for an all-ages concert. Detroit-based ADULT., the duo of Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller, brings a catalog of seven albums released through labels including DAIS, Mute, Ghostly International, Thrill Jockey, Third Man Records, Clone Records, and their own Ersatz Audio. Their work includes remixes for LIARS, John Foxx, and Barry Adamson, appearances alongside Nitzer Ebb, L7, Severed Heads, and Gary Numan, and a contribution to Mute Records’ STUMM433 tribute to John Cage’s 4'33" with fellow artists like Depeche Mode, New Order, and Cabaret Voltaire. Their album PERCEPTION IS/AS/OF DECEPTION grew out of a self-imposed stretch of sensory deprivation in a blacked-out basement studio, questioning how we see and process the world and nodding to ideas from Merleau-Ponty, Goethe, Aldous Huxley, and Jean Cocteau. A portion of each ticket, $0.25, supports The Shout Syndicate, a Boston-based volunteer effort that helps fund youth-led arts programs at established creative youth development nonprofits in Greater Boston, housed at The Boston Foundation and working in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Arts & Culture through Boston Creates.

Recorded primarily in Chicago with producer Chris Seefried, the sessions featured Joel Paterson on guitar, Scott Ligon on keyboards with vocal harmonies, Jimmy Sutton on bass, and Alex Hall on drums and engineering, with additional harmonies by Casey McDonough. LaFarge draws on the tradition of classic crooners and blends in wide-ranging influences, including the sounds of Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan alongside rocksteady, Latin music, and French chanson, shaping a style rooted in storytelling and melody.

    Bedouine

Arts at the Armory, 191 Highland Ave, Somerville
    See details

Bedouine brings an intimate evening of reflective folk to Arts at the Armory, shaped by a life spent crossing borders and finding home in sound. The project of Azniv Korkejian, born in Aleppo to Armenian parents and raised between the Middle East and the United States, blends 60s-inspired folk, 70s country textures, and a touch of bossa nova, carried by delicate guitar work and understated, nuanced vocals. A career in dialogue and music editing led her into a close-knit Echo Park music community, and a spur-of-the-moment studio visit with producer Gus Seyffert yielded the first take of Solitary Daughter. She went on to craft songs with contributors including Smokey Hormel, and worked with Matthew E. White and Trey Pollard before Thom Monahan brought the recordings together in a polished final mix. Her writing lingers on movement, memory, and belonging, at times folding in vivid sonic souvenirs such as the street sounds from her grandmother’s neighborhood in Aleppo. This concert is open to all ages.

The Sinclair, 52 Church St, Cambridge
    See details

Temples brings The BLISS Tour to The Sinclair in Cambridge, MA, offering a night with a band known for reshaping pop forms through a forward-looking strain of psychedelia. Founded in 2012 by bassist Tom Warmsley and singer and guitarist James Bagshaw, the UK group blends gritty glam rhythms, shimmering 12‑string textures, and hypnotic atmospheres into songs that feel classic and contemporary at the same time. Their home-recorded breakout, Shelter Song, led to a deal with Heavenly Records and a swift rise that included festival appearances and a Hyde Park bill alongside The Rolling Stones, with admirers such as Johnny Marr, Robert Wyatt, Suede, and Noel Gallagher taking notice. Their debut album, Sun Structures, mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer, later reached number 7 on the UK chart. The band draws on a wide palette that ranges from 60s psych to Motown, glam, Krautrock, and baggy, always keeping melody and invention at the core. This event is open to all ages. With every ticket sold, $0.25 benefits The Shout Syndicate, a Boston-based, volunteer-run effort that helps fund youth-led arts programs at established non-profit creative youth development organizations in Greater Boston. Mr Sun Plays Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite

Groton Hill Music Center, 122 Old Ayer Rd, Groton
    See details

Beloved melodies from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker are reimagined as Mr Sun channels the stylish jazz suite that Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn crafted, all viewed through the vibrant lens of a modern American string band. The quartet of Darol Anger on fiddle, Joe K. Walsh on mandolin, Grant Gordy on guitar, and Aidan O’Donnell on bass explores the score with both reverence and curiosity, blending chamber-like textures with the drive of roots music. Drawing from their recording, the music ranges from close readings of Strayhorn’s charts to expansive improvisations that spring from the suite’s themes. Solos are largely original, while signature statements by Johnny Hodges and Paul Gonsalves are thoughtfully quoted. Strayhorn’s striking horn voicings are translated to bowed strings, and layered mandolin parts give the arrangements extra punch. The album introduces one additional piece built from three ballet themes in a classic Dawg Music setting. On that recording, the Russian Dance bursts into full bluegrass with guest banjo by Alison Brown, and Jerry Douglas adapts a celebrated Lawrence Brown trombone feature in Dance Of The Floreadores, retitled “(don’t) Walk On The Flowers.” Now on tour, the group recreates the scope of the album... the core quartet is often joined by regional string players to evoke the sweep of a larger ensemble and a full orchestra of sound.

Inspired by true events, the case revolves around a fraught love triangle and a multimillion-dollar divorce that culminates in a homicide. With no DNA to rely on, you will listen to witnesses, study the evidence, respond to prompts, and cast votes that guide the story. Pay close attention, small details can shift the result, and in the end your verdict of guilty or not guilty determines the fate of the accused. Bring a phone to scan QR codes during key moments. The performance is in English and the venue is wheelchair accessible. Suitable for ages 12 and up, with attendees under 16 required to be accompanied by an adult. Part of The Jury Experience series, which features additional cases. Script, staging, and creative direction are by Agustina Videla and Pablo Destito.

    Kids Winter Break 2026 12/28-12/31

325 Chelmsford St, Lowell · verified Oct 4
    See details

Celebrate winter break with a hands-on clay experience that explores handbuilding, wheel throwing, and glazing. Participants divide their time between the pottery wheel and sculpting by hand, creating useful and decorative pieces such as cups, bowls, mugs, small dishes, wall pockets, planters, or simple tic-tac-toe boards. Along the way, they work with tools like a slab roller, an extruder, and a selection of hand tools to shape and finish their projects. This program is for ages 9 and up and is well suited to tweens. Wheel work demands strength and focus, so it is not recommended for younger children. The group is led by a single staff member, making maturity and readiness important. Tickets are available in two-day increments or at a discounted rate for a full four-day session. Safety measures include plenty of space to spread out and ample disinfectant for a clean, comfortable creative environment. Dependent Care Reimbursement is not available.
