Union Square Main Streets presents the Union Square Farmers Market, now in its 22nd year, featuring more than 60 local food producers. The market spotlights area farmers, offers opportunities to talk with producers, and welcomes participation from community groups. Somerville’s Yart Sale turns the whole city into a creative marketplace, blending the feel of a neighborhood yard sale with an artistic flair. Across local neighborhoods, residents and creatives offer original artwork, handmade pieces, vintage goods, art materials, records, plants, clothing, tools, home accents, and other one-of-a-kind finds. Spend the day wandering from spot to spot, meeting artists and makers, and searching for unique items or creative supplies. An interactive map and participant listings will help you plan a route among the many simultaneous sales. Community members, including artists, makers, collectors, and neighbors, can also host from a porch, yard, driveway, studio, business, or another approved location. Comfortable walking shoes and a sturdy tote are recommended, because you never know what treasures will turn up.

The Charles River Jazz Festival returns with an expanded experience at the Hatch Memorial Shell. It offers a full day of live music, food, and community. With a larger stage and more space, this edition welcomes more artists and vendors while preserving the familiar vibe. Rooted in Boston, the festival brings together world class performers and local jazz artists for a free, family friendly celebration of creativity and connection. Part of the Longfellow Summer Arts Festival on the front lawn of the Longfellow House, this reading honors Marie Howe, recipient of the 2026 Golden Rose Award for Poetry, and is presented in partnership with the New England Poetry Club. The event is free and open to everyone. Howe is the author of New and Selected Poems (W.W. Norton, 2024), a volume that gathers work from four earlier books. She served as New York State Poet Laureate from 2012 to 2014, is poet in residence at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, and is a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. Her debut, The Good Thief, was selected for the National Poetry Series by Margaret Atwood and received the Lavan Younger Poets Prize from the American Academy of Poets, and her work often reflects on the mysteries of body and spirit through biblical and mythic echoes. She has taught at Sarah Lawrence College, Columbia University, and NYU, coedited In the Company of My Solitude: American Writing from the AIDS Pandemic, and has been awarded fellowships from the Bunting Institute at Radcliffe College, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Academy of American Poets, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. She lives in New York City.

Now in its fifteenth year, this back-to-school celebration at TD Garden helps families get ready for the new academic year with backpacks, school supplies, winter coats, and other helpful items for students. Last year, 3,500 Boston-area families took part through a partnership among TD Garden, The Salvation Army Massachusetts Division, and the City of Boston, and the goal is to provide similar support again. Over the past decade, TD Garden in the Community has donated more than 56,000 backpacks to the Greater Boston community. Registration is required, and sponsorship and volunteer opportunities are available.
