Miller has toured in North America and Ireland with Bua, Danny Diamond and other groups, performs with Northern Shores and Two Tap Trio, teaches at the Center for Irish Music, and has received Minnesota State Arts Board grants for research into Irish influenced music of Midwestern lumberjacks. He also writes the Northwoods Songs blog and hosts the weekly Shamrock Shore program on Jazz88.fm. Rooted in the Twin Cities tradition of lively Irish sessions supported by the Center for Irish Music and Celtic Junction, the series keeps the music going late into the night and Waldmann keeps the doors open as long as the tunes continue.

Leavin’ Page Town returns to the Frontier Saloon at the Minnesota State Fair for live country music at a popular fairgrounds hangout. His eighth studio album, the double set Feel The Real, arrived in 2017 with the single Start Over and brought a thirteenth Grammy nomination. Sanctuary Strings, an acoustic guitar duo featuring Matt Guertin of local band Seismic City and Keith Curtis, will be at Water Works. They share beliefs that life exists on other planets, that art imitates life, and that the egg came before the chicken.

Presented by KFAI’s Temposphere at The Parkway Theater, this all-ages concert spotlights Antibalas, a Brooklyn-born collective that helped bring Afrobeat back to global attention after forming in 1997. Known for a live show that inspires nonstop movement, the group blends long-form grooves with interlocking rhythms shared by horns, drums, bass, guitars, keyboards, and vocals. Their approach grows from the tradition of Fela Kuti, with jazz-trained players crafting dance music that fuses funk and jazz into expansive, hypnotic songs. Rolling Stone has praised their exuberant take on Afrobeat. The ensemble’s name translates from Spanish as “bulletproof” or “anti-bullet,” and its roughly dozen members weave Latin, jazz, classical, funk, and soul into a horn-forward sound. The result is a tapestry of layered rhythms and socially conscious energy that many credit with introducing Afrobeat’s framework to a new generation. Their horn section has appeared on Grammy-winning albums by Angelique Kidjo and Mark Ronson and on numerous recordings and stages with artists such as The Roots, My Morning Jacket, TV on the Radio, Santigold, Jovanotti, Nneka, Alabama Shakes, The String Cheese Incident, Paul Simon, and Public Enemy. Former members have gone on to work with The Dap Kings, Mark Ronson, The Black Keys, the Arks, Menahan Street Band, El Michels Affair, Arcade Fire, Iron and Wine, Bat For Lashes, and Imogen Heap. With the Daptone Records release Hourglass, Antibalas returns to its instrumental core. Earlier albums used lyrics to confront topics including patriarchy, climate change, militarism, late stage capitalism, oligarchy, white ethnonationalism, and the genocide of Native Americans. On this recording, those ideas are voiced through melody and rhythm to connect across languages. The title track opens with an impassioned tenor saxophone statement before locking into a surging 12-8 pulse. “Lo-Life” showcases a swinging feel in the spirit of Machito and 1970s Ghanaian dance bands, while “Solace,” “Escape,” and “La Ceiba” nod to classic Lagos Afrobeat with a Brooklyn accent. “Oasis” closes the album with a psychedelic journey grounded in liberating funk. On stage, the band’s power lies not only in volume but in nuance. Horn lines intertwine, sections spark call-and-response, and the entire ensemble builds a shared groove that grows in intensity. The effect is joyful, communal, and tailor-made for dancing.
