The shelter relies on a large team, with around 70 volunteers needed each week. Volunteers can choose the day of the week and one of four overnight three-hour shifts that best fit their schedules. Light refreshments will be available before a program that traces the story behind a handmade quilt honoring the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the area that would become Kansas and Kansas City. Researched and designed by the late Ruth J. Schultz with fellow members of the Grinter Place Quilters Guild, the quilt hangs in an academic building at Kansas City Kansas Community College and was showcased in Kansas City, Kansas during the expedition’s bicentennial. Presenters Susie Taylor and Diane Pickman will explore its history using documentation Schultz left, including a VHS documentary and personal albums of gathered materials. Both are members of organizations focused on the expedition, including the national Lewis and Clark Trail Alliance and the Missouri-Kansas Riverbend Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Heritage Trail Foundation. They shared these findings at a national convention hosted by their local chapter in Kansas City, Missouri, then presented again at KCKCC with the quilt on view. Although the quilt is on permanent display at KCKCC, this program highlights its distinctive design and historical significance. For those needing post access, visitor passes are virtual and linked to a visitor’s identification, registration cannot be completed more than ten days in advance, text notifications indicate approval or whether a stop at the Visitor Center is required, and the same ID used for registration must be presented at the gate.
