Freedom on the Coast: a Juneteenth Galveston Dinne “ Farm to Table”

An elevated farm to table evening marks Juneteenth with a Galveston focus, highlighting freedom, heritage, and coastal Southern cooking. In an intimate, candlelit setting, a thoughtfully curated four course menu draws on Gulf Coast flavors, Louisiana influences, and enduring Southern traditions. The experience begins with a cocktail hour featuring hors d’oeuvres and a featured drink, then transitions to a seated four course dinner. The menu opens with charred oysters roasted in Cajun-spiced butter with parmesan and green onions, followed by a rich gumbo with chicken, andouille, the holy trinity, okra, and rice. The main course presents seared snapper with an etouffee-style sauce, creamy grits, pickled okra, and chilled mixed greens. Dessert concludes with pecan praline bread pudding topped with a warm caramel rum sauce. Featured cocktails include Rumbo, a bold, savory nod to gumbo with a blackened rim and Southern garnish, and the Galveston Daiquiri made with rum, lime, grapefruit, and a hint of maraschino. A curated selection of Black-owned wines will be showcased throughout the evening. This class is designed for adults and youth ages 12 and up who want to explore new crafting techniques and styles, with no prior experience needed. The instructor demonstrates each layer while painting alongside the group so participants can follow along and finish a complete work. Please meet in the Classroom. The fee is $50 per person and includes all materials. Each session in the series stands on its own, so attending every class is not required. Space is limited and preregistration is encouraged. Instruction is led by Sara-Jane, who has more than 10 years of experience teaching painting and drawing. She has taught in New York, Connecticut, Virginia, and in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and believes that with the right tools everyone can paint.

Adult & Pediatric CPR BLS AED First Aid

This in-person class teaches adult and pediatric first aid, CPR, and AED skills and provides a certificate the same day. The session lasts about 4 hours and 30 minutes and costs $100. It is designed for individuals with little or no medical training who need certification to meet job, regulatory, or similar requirements. Common participants include child care workers, nannies, daycare staff, teachers, senior caregivers, foster care workers, camp counselors, youth organization staff, construction workers, and coaches for children’s sports. It is also well suited for parents, grandparents, babysitters, and guardians. Instruction covers high quality CPR, the Cardiac Chain of Survival, proper use of an AED, and ways to respond to choking for adults, children, and infants. The course also addresses how to recognize and care for sudden illnesses such as diabetic emergencies, allergic reactions, poisoning, seizures, fever, stroke, and shock. Additional topics include treating wounds and burns, concussions, injuries to muscles, bones, and joints, controlling external bleeding, and responding to heat related issues like cramps, exhaustion, and heat stroke, as well as cold related conditions including hypothermia and frostbite.

Nerf Wars returns to Rick’s Place for its fourth year, launching summer with fast-paced play and activities for all ages. Each participant receives a complimentary meal redeemable at onsite food trucks, adding a tasty bonus to the day. All gear is provided, including Rival brand Nerf blasters, safety eyewear, and access to play zones set with obstacles, and personal blasters are not allowed. Games include styles such as speedball, capture the flag, and freeze tag. To keep things safe and enjoyable, fields are organized by age groups for ages 0 to 3, 4 to 6, 7 to 10, and 11 and up, plus a relaxed, low impact option open to everyone. Those who prefer activities beyond Nerf can explore a rock climbing wall, face painting, inflatables, a foam party suited to younger children, water balloon launching, rocket target practice, and visits with community partners and vendors. At check-in, attendees receive a meal ticket to exchange for their preferred dish at participating food trucks. Registration opens two weeks in advance, and advance sign-up is required with one ticket per person. This program is limited to the military community, and proof of military affiliation, such as a Military ID, is needed at check-in. Bringing portable chairs and refillable water bottles is recommended, and arriving on time helps participants make the most of the full slate of activities.

Art Therapy for Cancer Patients

Free art therapy is available to cancer patients in the Cancer Treatment and CyberKnife Center conference room, which can be reached by taking the elevator down from the Cancer Center lobby. On the first Wednesday of each month, sessions take place in the Center’s lobby. No prior art experience is needed, and a range of materials will be used. Sessions are facilitated by certified art therapist Yael Divon. Art therapy is a mental health practice where an art therapist guides participants in using creative media to process emotions, reduce stress and anxiety, resolve conflicts, increase self-awareness and self-esteem, manage behavior, and improve orientation to reality. The goal is to support or restore daily functioning and a sense of well-being. It can benefit those facing developmental, medical, educational, social, or psychological challenges, offering a way to express difficult feelings when words are not enough and the uplifting experience of making art. This youth enrichment workshop series helps young people build everyday life skills that support growth, confidence, and day to day success. Sessions combine conversation, real world demonstrations, and hands on activities so participants can develop healthy routines, make thoughtful decisions, and become more independent. The atmosphere is safe and encouraging, giving youth the chance to explore new skills and form connections with mentors and peers. There is no cost to attend. Designed for ages 11 to 18, it serves middle and high school students, youth seeking personal development and confidence building, those interested in practical skills for daily life, and young people in underserved communities who can benefit from mentorship and life skills education.

Bass Fundamentals: Introduction to Crankbaits

Crankbaits are a powerful option for bass anglers, built to sweep water quickly, spark reaction bites, and reveal active fish. This guided, hands-on class explains when to use a crankbait, how to choose the right type, and the most effective ways to fish it with confidence. Participants learn to match lure selection to depth, water clarity, and conditions, understand the roles of shallow, medium, and deep-diving models, select productive colors and patterns for different environments, and apply retrieval methods that trigger strikes. The session also demonstrates how crankbaits can efficiently find and target bass so time on the water is more productive. It is suitable for newcomers to artificial lures as well as anglers looking to sharpen their approach. All rods, reels, and lures are provided. Ages 13 and older are eligible, and those 15 or younger must have a parent or guardian on site. Participants should wear closed-toe footwear, a hat with a visor, and eye protection.

Instruction covers how to choose and handle saltwater materials, shape realistic profiles, build in movement, strengthen durability, and understand how these flies are fished in coastal environments. Guidance on dividing dense crowns and complex root systems shows how to read growth patterns and separate sections that maintain a healthy root-to-shoot balance for dependable establishment. Aftercare is addressed in depth, including how to manage humidity, light, and structural support to protect fresh grafts and new layers during callus formation and early rooting. The session lasts 4 hours and 30 minutes and the fee is $100. It is intended for people with little or no medical background who need CPR and First Aid certification to satisfy job, regulatory, or other requirements. It welcomes child care workers, nannies, daycare staff, teachers, senior caregivers, foster care workers, camp counselors, those involved with youth organizations, construction workers, and coaches in children’s sports. It is also a good fit for parents, grandparents, babysitters, and guardians. Instruction covers performing high-quality CPR, the chain of survival for cardiac emergencies, how to operate an automated external defibrillator, and techniques to assist a choking adult, child, or infant. AKC Rally Handling Seminar - Getting Ready for the National Championships -

RiverRun presents an AKC Rally handling seminar designed to help teams get competition ready for the AKC Rally National Championship. It is open to all, yet the curriculum is tailored to handlers who are aiming for the championship stage. Topics include interpreting signs and understanding where points are commonly lost, how judging can vary for the same mistake, and strategies for building confidence for both handler and dog in the ring. Participants will explore the value of muscle memory, practice staying connected with their dogs while navigating courses and signs, review essential cues, and learn when and how to offer support without creating added pressure. There will also be time to work through specific exercises that individuals find challenging and to address additional questions. The seminar is led by Paula Thomason, who has earned more than 20 Rally championships across five breeds, with all but one achieved through at least 20 triple events. Her record includes over 180 High In Trial awards. In 2021, four of her dogs ranked among the top all-breed AKC Top Dogs in Rally: Ash led German Shepherd Dogs and placed third in herding and overall, Levi topped Russell Terriers and the Terrier group and placed fourth overall, Spot led Border Collies and ranked fourth in herding and fifth overall, and Patch led Mini American Shepherds and placed fifth in herding and sixth overall. Many of Paula’s students consistently earn ribbons and have achieved Rally championships as well. Working entries are 100 dollars and auditing is 30 dollars. Basic Rod Building Workshop

This hands-on workshop guides participants through building a custom 6.5-foot medium-action spinning rod from blank to finished tool they can bring home. The class meets over three evenings to cover each step, provide time for the required craft work, and allow finishes to cure properly. No prior experience is required, and all tools, materials, and instruction are provided by experienced instructors. Participants learn how to find the rod spine for better performance, prepare and install handles and guides, set guide spacing and alignment, wrap guides cleanly and securely, and apply epoxy for a long-lasting, pro-level finish. Because the workshop spans three sessions, participants should plan to attend each night to complete their rod. Epoxy needs about eight hours to harden, so completed rods are available for pickup on the next business day after the final class. All equipment is supplied. Enrollment is limited to once every 36 months per person, and space is limited. This is a great fit for anglers who want a closer connection to their gear or anyone who enjoys a satisfying DIY project.

Golf Tournament

Hosted by the Hope Mills Chamber of Commerce, this annual golf tournament brings together a friendly day of play, networking, and community support at Gates Four Golf & Country Club. Player registration is $70 for an individual or $280 for a team of four. Optional extras include two mulligans for $15, Tee Busters for $5, and Fireball shots for $5 each or four for $15. Payment can be made by cash, check, or PayPal. Sponsorship opportunities are available at several levels. The Diamond level at $1,500 includes four player spots, a marquee sign, a table on holes closest to the pavilion such as four to six, social media shoutouts, and the option to set up a tent. The Presidential level at $1,000 includes four players, a table under the pavilion, social media recognition, a name on the event banner, and yard signs. The Executive level at $750 includes two player entries, yard signs at the holes, and social media promotion. The Ambassador level at $100 includes social media recognition. Proceeds and participation help bolster local businesses, community efforts, and Chamber programs that strengthen the Hope Mills area, blending quality golf with good company and a meaningful community impact.
