Recovery Dharma

Recovery Dharma is a peer-led program grounded in Buddhist principles that supports recovery from substance use and process addictions. Meetings include a guided meditation, readings from the Recovery Dharma book, and time to share personal experiences in a supportive space. The approach draws on the Buddha’s Four Noble Truths, recognizing suffering, its causes, the possibility of its end, and the way that leads there, along with the Eightfold Path as a practical guide for wiser living, ethical action, mindful awareness, and focused attention. Participants build the capacity to act with integrity, see reality more clearly, and live with mindfulness as they access their own strength to heal and grow. The spirit of the gathering is reflected in a simple wish for happiness, ease, and freedom from suffering.

Picture Trivia brings a garden themed twist to a classic number calling game at Cape Fear Botanical Garden. Instead of standard bingo cards, participants use cards filled with images and mark matches as pictures are called. Play spans six rounds, with opportunities to win items from the Garden Gift Shop. Admission includes two picture cards for each participant, and additional cards are available for $2. The first 20 attendees receive a complimentary packet of seeds collected from the Garden. Prize selections reflect the natural setting, with options such as plants, wind chimes, and distinctive garden decor. Capacity is limited because only a set number of cards are available, so preregistration is recommended. Strolling the pathways before play is encouraged to enjoy the surroundings. The gathering is planned for the Gift Shop Terrace, with the Entry Pavilion or the Orangery available if weather requires a change. Fees are $8 for members and $20 for guests.

Fly-Tying Forum

A hands-on fly tying forum dedicated to spring baitfish patterns that perform on the water. The focus is on purposeful design and building streamers that draw strikes when predators key on minnows. Two classics take center stage. The Sparkle Minnow is a streamlined, flash-forward imitation of vulnerable forage, tuned for balance and versatility so it can provoke quick hits from bass and other gamefish when minnows are the menu. The Muddler Minnow features a spun deer hair head that displaces water and creates a bold silhouette, and it remains effective whether it is stripped, swung, or guided through cover. The session highlights how spring conditions shift feeding toward larger prey, and how relying only on nymphs and dry flies can leave opportunities on the table. Instruction covers shaping clean, balanced profiles, using flash for realism rather than excess, spinning and trimming deer hair with confidence, and finishing flies that are durable and ready to fish. Participants leave with two proven streamers and the skills to reproduce them. Expect clear, step-by-step teaching, beginner-friendly support, a structured and welcoming setting, tools and materials available if needed, and a community of tiers focused on improving their craft.

Paddy & Bill

Paddy and Bill perform live at Paddy's Irish Pub with a set that stretches from heartfelt ballads to rock and cheeky pub favorites. Songs like The Pussy Cat Song, Alice, and Seven Drunken Nights have earned them packed rooms across North and South Carolina and a strong following among local college crowds and the military communities connected to Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base. Their reach now extends worldwide through those connections. The duo is currently based in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Patrick (Paddy) Gibney was born in Dublin, Ireland, came to the United States in 1987 on a soccer scholarship to Fayetteville Academy, graduated magna cum laude from Methodist College, began graduate studies at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, then chose to pursue life as a songwriter, singer, and guitarist. He performs with Bill Ayerbe, a classically trained violinist and fiddler originally from Jersey City, who studied at the Ukrainian Institute of America, attended New York University and Creighton University, served in the US Army, and settled in the Fayetteville area. Bill has been concertmaster for the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra and a member of the board of directors for the Cumberland Oratorio Society.

Nature's Skyscrapers: Understanding NC's Trees Seminar at the Garden

This seminar spotlights the towering native trees that shape North Carolina’s landscapes, from the ancient bald cypress of blackwater swamps to white oaks and tulip poplars in the Piedmont. Designed for adults and teens ages 10 and up, it blends natural history with practical skills for anyone interested in trees. Participants will learn to identify major canopy species such as tulip poplar, loblolly pine, and several oaks by observing bark patterns, leaf shapes, and overall silhouette. The session also examines the vertical ecology within a mature tree, showing how life from lichens to raptors depends on different levels of a tall canopy. Guidance is provided on evaluating whether a site can support large species by calculating critical root zones and checking overhead clearance, along with long term preservation practices that avoid soil compaction, dispel mulch volcanoes, and support advocacy for protecting old growth trees. The fee is $20 for non-members and $8 for members. Space is limited, and preregistration is requested. Jose Sarduy and Paul Snyder

Headliner Jose Sarduy teams up with featured comic Paul Snyder for a standup showcase of nationally touring talent at Paddy’s Comedy Club. Sarduy draws on a life packed with stories, from leaving Cuba as a child after his father was held as a political prisoner to growing up in a hardworking Cuban family that supplied endless comedic moments. He attended the U.S. Air Force Academy, became an officer and aviator, served in Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, traveled the world, and even faced hostile fire. Onstage, he turns those experiences and family tales into sharp, personal comedy grounded in the belief that finding humor in tough times means you have moved past them. Sarduy’s career began in New York and Philadelphia while he was still serving, and he now performs across the globe. Highlights include selections for the Latino Laugh Festival in Los Angeles and the Lucky 21 showcase in Las Vegas, wins at the Funniest Person in South Texas and the Rocky Mountain Laugh Off, and strong runs in the San Francisco and Seattle international competitions. His media credits span CNN, CBS, Fox, Lifetime’s Coming Home with The GIs of Comedy, NUVO TV’s Comedy Unfiltered, three seasons co-hosting NUVO’s Stand Up and Deliver, two seasons on Fox TV’s Laughs as both performer and host, and NBC’s Last Call with Carson Daly. His Dry Bar Comedy specials Cuban Pilot and Airplanes & Broken English rank among the platform’s most watched, and he was featured on CBS’s Comics Unleashed in 2026. When he is not onstage, he spends part of each month in Texas helping train the next wave of pilots. Featured act Paul Snyder brings his own distinct style to clubs and theaters around the country. He was a finalist in the 2020 Jeanne Robertson Humor Competition, is set to record his first Dry Bar special at the end of September, and has featured for Henry Cho, Michael Palascak, Aaron Weber, Brian Bates, and others.

Celebrating 20 years! Miles for Mission walkathon 2026

Marking two decades of walking for global outreach, this community walkathon at Arnette Park supports missionary work launched by Calvary Holiness Church. Started to nurture youth involvement in foreign missions and to assist people they knew personally in the field, the effort has expanded to aid projects around the world, including work in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Africa, Thailand, the Philippines, Belize, and Guatemala. Organizers report having sent at least $240,000 to the mission field, and they emphasize that all funds raised go directly to the missionaries and projects supported, with none kept by the local church. The event features long standing traditions such as commemorative T shirts for participants, on site distribution of shirts and collected donations before the walk begins, a group photo, and refreshments and food available during the gathering.
