“Retracing the Lewis and Clark Expedition”
Bass Lake Park hosts an evening with National Geographic Explorer Dr. Roland Kays, who will share a first-hand report from his cross-country expedition retracing the route of Lewis and Clark. Working with the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute and partners across the country, his team re-surveyed wildlife along the historic path to compare today’s observations with notes recorded from 1804 to 1806. Dr. Kays, together with Matt Jones, Head of Digital Media at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, will present Return of the Wild and discuss how modern findings line up with the original journals. Expect stories from the field and striking video gathered through camera traps, GPS tracking, and on-the-water observation by canoe and kayak, plus time spent in wetlands, forests, and prairies. The program includes a sneak peek of footage being developed for a national documentary, along with refreshments and an opportunity to meet Dr. Kays and Matt Jones. Dr. Kays directs the Biodiversity Research Lab at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and serves as a research scientist at NC State University. His work blends technology and traditional field methods to study free-ranging animals, and he regularly shares insights on the Wild Animals YouTube channel and the museum’s Wild Animals Podcast.
