NCRC’s weekly social run and walk sets out from Bottle Theory. The course is flat and shaded, and walking is completely fine, especially in hot weather. Participants gather on the outdoor deck, then follow the White Oak Creek Greenway toward the American Tobacco Trail, choosing the distance that fits. Afterward, enjoy beer, wine, or a nonalcoholic option. Trivia Night adds to the atmosphere, and there is always a food truck. All are welcome.

A work day at Simple Gifts Community Garden offers hands-on time in the vegetable beds and berry rows. Annual family membership is $20, and participants may take home some produce on days they work, while most of the harvest supports local food banks. No advance signup is required. “Retracing the Lewis and Clark Expedition”

Bass Lake Park hosts an evening with National Geographic Explorer Dr. Roland Kays, who will share a first-hand report from his cross-country expedition retracing the route of Lewis and Clark. Working with the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute and partners across the country, his team re-surveyed wildlife along the historic path to compare today’s observations with notes recorded from 1804 to 1806. Dr. Kays, together with Matt Jones, Head of Digital Media at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, will present Return of the Wild and discuss how modern findings line up with the original journals. Expect stories from the field and striking video gathered through camera traps, GPS tracking, and on-the-water observation by canoe and kayak, plus time spent in wetlands, forests, and prairies. The program includes a sneak peek of footage being developed for a national documentary, along with refreshments and an opportunity to meet Dr. Kays and Matt Jones. Dr. Kays directs the Biodiversity Research Lab at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and serves as a research scientist at NC State University. His work blends technology and traditional field methods to study free-ranging animals, and he regularly shares insights on the Wild Animals YouTube channel and the museum’s Wild Animals Podcast. NC 15-6 Annual “Let’s Roll” Sanctioned Event

The Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association NC 15-6 presents the Annual “Let’s Roll” Ride, a day centered on motorcycles, camaraderie, and support for the veteran community. The schedule features on-site registration, a welcome and ride brief, bikes rolling out for the ride, and a closing raffle and auction. Each attendee receives a warm ceremonial cup and is guided on how to drink and work with this plant medicine. The space is created with care to support emotional, energetic, and cellular transformation, and participants may experience renewal, peace, grounding, and a softening of the heart. The gathering offers a chance to release what is no longer needed and to invite clarity and inner harmony. It takes place only once each year during the shaman’s visit, and space is limited with reservations required. The cost is $50 in total, secured by a $25 non-refundable, non-transferable deposit. Attendees are welcome to bring folding chairs, small tents, or blankets to enjoy vendors, music, and food. The day includes a brief quarter mile walk, flanked by photographs honoring loved ones with Down syndrome. Donations and sponsorships raised through this event sustain NCDSA, supporting programming, direct assistance for families, and resources for healthcare providers, educators, and policymakers. Participation offers several ways to get involved, and registration and attendance are free. As the only statewide grassroots nonprofit serving people with Down syndrome in NC, NCDSA uses Buddy Walk support to power family navigation, advocacy, medical outreach, education support, skill building, and social programming.
