Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2, the Romantic from 1930, places feeling at the forefront, unfolding in expansive themes and luminous orchestral colors. Together, these works trace nearly a century of composition and offer a vivid portrait of the American symphonic tradition.

This annual fall swap meet offers space for sellers and an easy way for shoppers to browse. Vendor spaces cost $20 and include entry for one person. Spectators can attend for $5.

Unwind with a relaxing, hands-on class led by Bizzy of Lilibet Crafty Co. and create a fall foliage design using Kinusaiga, a Japanese technique that layers and tucks fabric into a colorful, no-sew mosaic. Choose from a variety of templates, learn the process, and finish a 6 inch by 6 inch artwork to take home. This workshop is for ages 16 and up, and each participant must have their own ticket. Registration covers materials and instruction to begin a crocheted project. Refunds are available if requested at least 72 hours before the workshop starts. After that, refunds are not issued unless a waitlist participant can take the spot, and registrations may be transferred to another person. A minimum of 10 participants is required, and if that number is not reached you will be notified and refunded.

A six week beginner mahjong league features four games each night for a total of 24, keeping the focus on friendly competition. Players may share a seat by splitting the six weeks with a friend, or participate as a substitute. The league includes a welcome gift, weekly door prizes, and end of season awards for first, second, and third place, plus a lighthearted atmosphere with plenty of laughs. Play follows NMJL rules, and participants should already know the basics and feel comfortable completing four games within two hours.

Build your conversational French in a friendly language exchange guided by facilitator Monique Ammi. The format supports language learners at every level with an emphasis on real conversation across multiple languages. The schedule rotates each week, with the first Wednesday dedicated to French, the second to Italian, the third to Portuguese, and the fourth to Spanish.

A guest artist recital for tuba and piano brings together Philip Sinder and Ling Lo at NDSU Beckwith Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public, and the performance will also be available to watch online. Sinder recently concluded a 46-year tenure teaching tuba and euphonium at the Michigan State University College of Music. His former students hold positions across the United States and have earned recognition in major competitions. As a performer, he has appeared with ensembles such as the Detroit Symphony, Chicago Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Mariinsky Orchestra, and Houston Symphony. He helped found the Brass Band of Battle Creek and performs frequently with the Lansing Symphony, Michigan Opera Theatre, and the Beaumont Brass Quintet of MSU. His solo recording titled Aerodynamics received strong critical notice, and he has contributed to more than 20 large ensemble and brass quintet recordings. Honors include the Withrow Excellence in Teaching Award from MSU and the International Tuba Euphonium Association Excellence in Teaching Award. He serves as chairman of the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival and has been a Valade Teaching Fellow at Interlochen Arts Camp since 2005. His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Music Education and Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Music from Wichita State University. Lo is an active collaborative pianist and soloist who has presented guest recitals at institutions including Purdue University Fort Wayne, Olivet College, Saginaw Valley State University, the University of Louisville, SUNY Potsdam, Schenectady County Community College, and the University of Kentucky. She has served as a festival pianist for the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival, the Mid-West Regional Tuba and Euphonium Conference, the Henri Selmer Summer Clarinet Festival, and The Potsdam Clarinet Summit, and has worked on a range of opera productions. Passionate about chamber music, she has formed ensembles exploring both classical and contemporary repertoire, among them a piano, violin, and clarinet trio sponsored by the Verdehr Trio, Henosis Piano Quartet, Connexion Trio, and Duo LoW, which focuses on expanding music for piano and low brass. Her educational work includes serving as program assistant for Celebrating of Spectrum: A Festival for Music and Life from 2016 to 2019 and presenting that initiative at the DOCTRID conference in Limerick, Ireland. She has taught at SUNY Potsdam, Saginaw Valley State University, and The Flint Institute of Music, and was a staff pianist at Texas A&M University–Kingsville. She is Teaching Assistant Professor in Collaborative Piano at the University of North Dakota and spends summers at New England Music Camp as chair of the piano area. Lo holds doctoral and master’s degrees from Michigan State University in piano performance and collaborative piano, along with a master’s degree in piano performance from Boston University, and studied with Pavel Nersessian, Konstantinos Papadakis, Deborah Moriarty, and Zhihua Tang.

The FM Milk Circle breastfeeding support gathering takes place at Moorhead Public Library. Parents and caregivers at every stage of their feeding journey are welcome. Discover the full process of wheel-thrown pottery in a six-session course that welcomes beginners and those returning to the wheel. The first class covers the essentials from centering and opening to pulling walls, building a foundation for everything that follows. Next comes trimming and shaping mug forms, a stage where techniques begin to feel more natural. After that, learn to attach and pull comfortable handles and practice control by throwing spoon rests. Continued practice focuses on consistency while making smaller pieces like a ring dish and a citrus juicer. The final week of throwing is devoted to bud vases and refining forms so pieces look clean and intentional. The course concludes with glazing, including step-by-step guidance to help finished work turn out as intended. All clay and glaze are provided, and the class is best suited for ages 16 and up. Wear clothing that can get messy and allows you to lean forward comfortably, choose short sleeves or ones you can push up, remove rings and bracelets, and trim nails beforehand for easier handling of clay. If a session is missed, wheel time can be made up during studio open hours. Expect a hands-on experience that takes projects from the first spin of the wheel to kiln-ready, glazed pieces.

National Spread Joy Day is marked with a Breakfast & Blooms gathering that pairs a shared meal with a mission to brighten lives through flowers. Community members and partners come together for breakfast and conversation about how floral gifts uplift the community. There is an opportunity to take a bouquet and share it with someone in need, adding a touch of joy to their day. Proceeds benefit Hope Blooms. Raspberry Jam, the annual salute to Carole King, takes the stage at TAK Music Venue with a night of soulful favorites for lifelong listeners and new fans alike. This year’s program highlights the 55th anniversary of Tapestry and Music, the landmark 1971 albums, with the second set dedicated entirely to songs from Tapestry. The Raspberry Jam Band features Kari Marie del Rio on piano and vocals, Cayden Ganser on guitar, Matthew Tinjum on drums, Doug Neill on bass, and “Dakota Kate” Henne on harmonica, mandolin, and violin. Featured vocalists Andi Thoreson and Sarah Morrau add powerful lead moments, and special guests broaden the ensemble with a horn section and a second keyboardist. A social hour gets things started as Deb’s Corner Foods serves a range of meals and snacks for both meat lovers and vegetarian or vegan diners, available from the time doors open through intermission or while supplies last. The venue also offers cold beverages for purchase, including a full bar with ID. All ages are welcome, and children under 7 are admitted free. Every ticket includes access to a round or hightop table, and seating is first come, first served. General admission and ADA tickets are $19.71. VIP admission is $25 and places guests in a special section near the front with unassigned seating. This event is open to all ages. Brown is the creator and host of Good Eats and has also helmed Iron Chef America, Food Network Star, and Cutthroat Kitchen. Before reimagining the modern cooking show through Good Eats, he directed television commercials and later trained in culinary school. His Netflix special Nostalgic reached the U.S. Top 10 and digs into life as a 90s kid in rural Alabama, touching on friends, board games, and family, and was filmed at the Lyric Theatre in his home state. Stroup has appeared multiple times on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, performs at New York’s Comedy Cellar, headlines clubs nationwide, and has toured with Bert Kreischer, Larry the Cable Guy, John Crist, and Nate Bargatze.
