Free events in Gloversville, NY

Fiber artists of any medium meet for the Knit and Crochet Social Group at the Amsterdam Free Library. Attendees can bring a work in progress, share finished items, and exchange tips, tricks, and ideas with fellow makers. This is a relaxed social gathering rather than a teaching program, created for knitters, crocheters, and other stitchers to work on their projects together. No registration is needed.

Community garden work hours focus on hands-on care and preparation of the growing space. Current projects include weed whacking, creating new beds for planting, watering as needed, weeding and thinning existing crops, and spreading wood chips as they arrive. There is also a small early harvest of asparagus ready this year. Sessions continue in cloudy or drizzly weather, but they are canceled if rain becomes steady. Additional garden hours will be announced, and organizers are gathering input from gardeners to help select the most popular days and times.

A free screening of 300 presents the 2006 historical fantasy action film adapted from Frank Miller’s graphic novel. It tells a dramatized account of the Battle of Thermopylae in the Greco-Persian Wars, following a Spartan king and 300 warriors as they face a vastly larger Persian army. Directed by Zack Snyder and released by Warner Bros., the film runs 117 minutes and is rated R, with a cast that includes Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, David Wenham, Rodrigo Santoro, and Andrew Pleavin. Concessions at The Glove will be open with soft drinks, candy, salty snacks, coffee, tea, beer, wine, hard cider, and freshly popped popcorn.
