    Vanessa Collier

Beston Hall , 4245 East Ave, Rochester
    See details

Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Vanessa Collier brings a sound rooted in classic Memphis soul, R&B, and blues. Her sixth album, Do It My Own Way, was crafted on analog gear with musicians playing together to capture a warm, old-school feel, complete with horn-forward grooves, layered vocals, and saxophone lines that add a subtle power to each track. The record ranges from the funk drive of Elbow Grease to the moody pull of Take Me Back and the rhumba sway of Just One More, while Shoulda Known Better stands out for its deep groove. Wild As a Rainstorm dives into retro soul with Hi Records legend Rev. Charles Hodges on organ and has been featured on Spotify’s Retro Soul playlist. Rosetta honors trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the title track pushes back against industry sexism, and closing song Warrior celebrates resilience and pays tribute to her mother. Collier wrote the songs, produced the project, arranged the horns and other parts, and performs on acoustic and electric guitars, alto and tenor saxophones, flute, and lead and background vocals. The album also features Laura Chavez, Scott Sutherland, Byron Cage, and Rev. Charles Hodges. A Berklee College of Music graduate who first toured with blues icon Joe Louis Walker before stepping out on her own, she is a twelve-time Blues Music Award nominee and a four-time winner, including honors such as Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year, Horn Player of the Year, and B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. She has appeared at the Chicago Blues Festival, opened for Blues Traveler, draws inspiration from artists like Mavis Staples, Sharon Jones, James Brown, and Aretha Franklin, and previously saw Heart On The Line spend nine weeks in the top 15 of the Billboard Blues Albums chart.

Along the way, the captain shares canal history, sights along the route, stories from the waterway, details about the Colonial Belle and its family tour boat operation on the Erie Canal since 1989, and answers questions. The experience includes lock passage and a three hour narrated cruise with live music. Bagged snacks and a wide selection of non alcoholic and alcoholic beverages are available for purchase from the fully licensed bar, with cash and credit accepted on board. Outside food and drinks, including bottled water, are not permitted due to state and local regulations and insurance policies. Children ages 3 and under ride free with a reservation so they can be counted under US Coast Guard rules. Boarding begins 15 minutes before departure, and guests should check in at the dock before boarding. Public cruises sail when minimum passenger requirements are met. Performer lineups may change if unforeseen conflicts arise. A comparable act will be substituted when possible, or the price difference between a narrated cruise with live music and a regular narrated cruise will be refunded in the case of a last minute cancellation.

Choose the collection that suits you, either four 7 by 7 inch plates or two 7 by 7 inch plates with a 7 by 12 inch platter. Each piece will carry your own black and white decorative artwork, creating a cohesive set you can use, display, or gift. The first class focuses on planning and painting a sample 7 by 7 inch plate, learning decorative techniques in black and white, rolling out stoneware clay slabs, shaping the forms with pottery tools, and preparing everything for firing. After a professional firing, the second class is devoted to painting the bisque-fired pieces, refining details, and completing the collection. The cost is 120 dollars per person. All levels are welcome, and the workshop includes instruction, materials and supplies, stoneware clay and forms, both bisque and glaze firings, and pickup of your finished work. Completed sets are glaze fired and ready for pickup approximately four weeks after the final class.

    Neko Case

Water Street Music Hall, 204 N Water St, Rochester
    See details

Neko Case brings the Neon Grey Midnight Green Tour together with a solo performance from Destroyer. Case’s ninth album, Neon Grey Midnight Green, drew immediate praise for pairing a bold, full-band sound with an unusually intimate atmosphere. Recorded live, the mix preserves small in-room moments like breaths and the soft rustle of sleeves to keep the human touch front and center. Long recognized as a singular American songwriter, she keeps pushing into braver, more adventurous territory with work that is witty, surprising, and deeply felt. She produced the album herself and has spoken about the scarcity of women, nonbinary, and trans producers in the industry. She identifies as gender fluid and uses she and her pronouns. Destroyer’s set is solo, spotlighting Dan Bejar’s unmistakable voice and enigmatic writing. Since 1995 the project has continually shifted shape, moving from early indie folk colored by Bowie influences to broader experiments in sound and delivery. Highlights across the catalog include the theatrical intimacy of Your Blues, the cinematic glow of Kaputt, and later turns toward synthesizers and spoken passages on Have We Met and Labyrinthitis. One dollar from every ticket benefits Peer Solutions and its positive youth leadership and development program, which works to prevent harm before it starts and cultivate lifelong ambassadors for positive change.

A bracketed latte art throwdown in Rochester, NY brings baristas into head-to-head matchups, with each faceoff decided by a single shot extraction and a single pour. A dedicated person pulls the shots for consistency, and competitors may use their own steaming pitcher or one supplied on site. Cups are provided, featuring Acme latte and cappuccino vessels. Whole milk comes from Seneca Milk, and one round highlights barista‑grade oat milk from Oatly. Judging focuses on overall aesthetic while considering contrast, definition, symmetry, and difficulty. Three judges vote independently, and any barista earning at least two votes advances. The competition steps through a planned series of challenges. The opening round is barista’s choice with whole milk. The second round requires a heart in a latte cup using oat milk. The third round calls for a tulip in a cappuccino cup with whole milk. The fourth round features a rosetta in a latte cup with whole milk. The fifth round returns to barista’s choice with whole milk. Registration includes an option to add a tip at checkout to increase the total contribution. All registration fees and tips support Mary’s Place Refugee Outreach.

    Grateful Shred

Water Street Music Hall, 204 N Water St, Rochester · verified Oct 9
    See details

Los Angeles-based Grateful Shred brings a laid-back, harmony-rich approach to the Grateful Dead’s songbook, delivered by Austin McCutchen on vocals and guitar, Dan Horne on bass and pedal steel with vocals, Mikaela Davis on vocals, Adam MacDougall on keys and vocals, John Lee Shannon on guitar, and Corey Rose on drums. Their sound leans into wide-open guitar tones, effortless three-part harmonies, choogling grooves, and exploratory solos. The band’s quick rise took them from playing Shakedown Street vendor areas before Dead and Company concerts to national tours, with a spontaneous Hollywood Bowl parking lot set that was shut down by police giving them an extra boost. Their first full studio album, Might As Well, arrived on their own Liberty Hair Farm Records and reimagines songs performed by the Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band with sun-bleached harmonies and an improvisational spirit. Guided by bassist and producer Dan Horne and recorded at Glendale’s UHF Studio, it honors the source material while highlighting tight group cohesion, pedal steel color, and a swinging rhythm section. They have also launched Dan’s Dubs, a series of live releases curated, mixed, and mastered by Horne.

Yokai: Songs of the Japanese Supernatural

Bop Shop Records, 1460 Monroe Ave, Rochester · verified Oct 9
    See details

Yokai! is a modern jazz project led by bassist Fumi Tomita, drawing on Japanese folklore to shape a program of music about spirits, shape-shifters, and otherworldly tales. The repertoire features eleven pieces largely informed by nineteenth century woodblock prints, with selections centered on figures like Daija (Monster Snake), Kitsune (The Fox), Betobetosan, Amabiko (Sea Lad), and Raiju (Thunder Beast). Hyakki Yagyo, or A Night Parade of One Hundred Demons, takes its cue from a nineteenth century scroll that portrays a wide array of yokai. Additional works evoke other Japanese supernatural beings, including the ghost Okiku, the magician Wakana-Hime (Princess Wakana), and the vengeful spirit Kiyomori. The quartet includes Carl Clements on tenor and soprano saxophones and flute, Jason Ennis on electric and acoustic guitars, Gary Fieldman on drums, and Fumi Tomita on acoustic bass. The music offers a modern jazz palette, and the instrumentation supports a wide range of styles and moods. Tickets are $25 at the door or online.

“21 Months: The Story of Our Museum’s Reinvention” with Drew Saur (11/5/26)

Mendon Community Center, 167 N Main St, Honeoye Falls
    See details

At a meeting of the Honeoye Falls Town of Mendon Historical Society, Drew Saur presents “21 Months: The Story of Our Museum’s Reinvention,” sharing how a late 2023 review of policies led to a complete rethinking of the museum. What began as a long overdue, top-to-bottom inventory of roughly 15,000 collection items became a deeper examination of what truly belongs in the museum, shifting attention from age alone to clear relevance for the community. Volunteers embraced a simple guiding question about visitor expectations as they evaluated each object, a perspective encouraged by Trustee Gary Albright. Their work culminated in a comprehensive refresh of the exhibits, the first time in the museum’s 56 year history that everything was redone and the most significant transformation in three decades. Saur’s perspective is informed by a career at the intersection of technology and leadership. He serves as Chief Information Officer for The Palmer Family of Companies, teaches in the Software Engineering Department at RIT, and founded The Progressive CIO, a blog focused on technology leadership. He has built high performing engineering and IT teams with an emphasis on empathy and trust. He is president of the Historical Society and previously led the Mendon Foundation, a land trust that helped develop and maintain the Lehigh Valley Trail in collaboration with the Monroe County Parks Department. The program takes place at the Mendon Community Center. The venue is accessible and the meeting is open to the public.

    Jim Henson's Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas

OFC Creations Theatre Center, 3450 Winton Pl, Rochester · verified Oct 11
    See details

OFC's Broadway in Brighton Series presents a Series Add On production of Jim Henson's Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, returning by popular demand. This stage adaptation of the classic television special is inspired by the illustrated book by Russell Hoban and Lillian Hoban, with music and lyrics by Paul Williams and a book by Timothy Allen McDonald and Christopher Gattelli. The production features puppets designed and created by the Jim Henson Company and is presented at the OFC Creations Theatre Center. Vivian Bayubay McLaughlin, known from Disney's Out of the Box and Sesame English, stars as Mrs. Alice “Ma” Otter. Set in Frogtown Hollow just before Christmas, the story follows Ma and Emmet as they each secretly hope to win a local talent contest with a fifty dollar prize so they can buy the other a special gift. Emmet thinks about forming a jug band with his friends, which would mean putting a hole in Ma’s washtub, the very tub she uses to earn money doing laundry. Ma considers pawning Pa’s old toolbox to create a costume for the contest, even though Emmet relies on those tools for odd jobs. As the contest draws near, their choices test the limits of sacrifice and love, and they discover what truly matters during the holidays. The score by Academy Award winning songwriter Paul Williams has been praised by The New York Times. Run time is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes plus intermission. The production is suitable for all ages, with a minimum age of 5.

East Ridge Billiards, 529 E Ridge Rd, Rochester
    See details

A statewide armwrestling clash arrives in Rochester, NY with two formats packed into a single schedule, where every pull influences the outcome and the planning starts before hands meet. The 3v3 Showdown features teams of three, each covering a different weight class. Every team competes in at least two matches, and the four highest performers move on to the finals. The No Elimination Tournament keeps competitors active after a setback, so everyone continues to pull with medals on the line. Scoring adds up across every match. Stepping into a higher weight class brings extra reward, and sweeping all four bouts within a class triggers a bonus. Lineups are locked for each game, which means pre-match choices carry real weight. Performance metrics will be tracked throughout. P/P, or points per pull, is calculated by dividing total points by total pulls. PPR, the Puller Performance Rating scored out of 100, reflects how a victory is earned, counting flash pins and fouls rather than just the result. The day’s PPR leader will be recognized as the Puller Performance winner. More details will be shared soon.

Members of the Rochester Cajun Zydeco Network receive the advance price at the door.
