Last year, nearly 2,500 luminarias illuminated the park, creating a quiet atmosphere of remembrance and hope. Individual luminarias are available for purchase at $12, with discounted bundles of 12 or 24, and Light Hill volunteers will create, personalize, place, and light each dedication. Advance orders are due by a specified deadline, and onsite purchases are available if that window is missed. The event aligns with National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, and community support through spreading the word or purchasing luminarias helps light the way for a mission of caring for others at a profound time in life. Raised in Leonia, New Jersey, he crossed the Hudson as a child to witness 1960s icons from the British Invasion to Motown. Later years in rural Enterprise, Alabama tuned his ear to foundational blues by Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, and Howlin' Wolf, influences that continue to inform his writing and stagecraft. He first made his mark in the early 1980s with They Came From Houses on New York’s underground circuit at CBGBs, Folk City, and the Mudd Club, sharing stages with Marshall Crenshaw, Mink DeVille, the Stray Cats, John Hammond Jr., George Thorogood, and David Johansen. After stepping back from a record deal to focus on family, he directed films, wrote jingles, and honed his craft with insight from artists including Willie Dixon, Robert Lockwood Jr., Jonnie Johnson, Sammy Cahn, Bruce Springsteen, Van Walls, Richie Havens, and Jackson Browne. He also deepened his connection to African American culture and the music of the Sea Islands, performing at The Gullah Festival in Beaufort, South Carolina, before returning full time to the stage in the 1990s. An early independent release drew the attention of Mick Taylor of The Rolling Stones, who contributed to The Turning Point and toured with him. Katz has long-standing connections with the Allman Brothers community, having been a member of Gregg Allman's band, Jaimoe's Jasssz Band, Butch Trucks' Freight Train Band and Les Brers, and he has also toured with the Allman Brothers. He is a six time nominee for the Blues Music Award Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year, won Acoustic Blues Album of the Year in 2019 for Journeys to the Heart of the Blues with Joe Louis Walker and Giles Robson, and received Living Blues Magazine nominations for Outstanding Musician on keyboards. A past Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music, Katz began classical piano at age 5, studied at Berklee and the New England Conservatory, worked with Big Mama Thornton and Ronnie Earl, and released albums including Crescent Crawl, Transformation and Mississippi Moan as his band began touring the U.S. and Europe. Roots rock collective Donna The Buffalo takes the stage for a seated general admission concert. This stage adaptation of the classic television special is inspired by the illustrated book by Russell Hoban and Lillian Hoban, with music and lyrics by Paul Williams and a book by Timothy Allen McDonald and Christopher Gattelli. The production features puppets designed and created by the Jim Henson Company and is presented at the OFC Creations Theatre Center. Vivian Bayubay McLaughlin, known from Disney's Out of the Box and Sesame English, stars as Mrs. Alice “Ma” Otter. Set in Frogtown Hollow just before Christmas, the story follows Ma and Emmet as they each secretly hope to win a local talent contest with a fifty dollar prize so they can buy the other a special gift. Emmet thinks about forming a jug band with his friends, which would mean putting a hole in Ma’s washtub, the very tub she uses to earn money doing laundry. Ma considers pawning Pa’s old toolbox to create a costume for the contest, even though Emmet relies on those tools for odd jobs. As the contest draws near, their choices test the limits of sacrifice and love, and they discover what truly matters during the holidays. The score by Academy Award winning songwriter Paul Williams has been praised by The New York Times. Run time is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes plus intermission.
