Explore the rhythms of Guinea in a West African drum and dance experience led by performer and teacher Mohamed Diaby. New participants are welcome, and you can choose drumming, dance, or both. Pricing is $15 for the drum class, $20 for the dance class, or $30 for the combined option, and drummers may stay to accompany the dance class for an additional $5. Payment is accepted in cash or via Venmo at @Diaby. Mohamed began playing jembe at the age of seven under the guidance of his older brother Moustapha. At fifteen he joined a group sponsored by the wife of President Sékou Touré of Guinea. With encouragement from Mamady Keita he became part of Africa Djole, then toured across West Africa as lead drummer with Les Merveilles de Guinea, including five years in Sierra Leone. Kemoko Sano, artistic director of Les Ballet Africains, praised his playing and sought to bring him into the company. In 1995 he came to the United States to perform at Symphony Space in New York City, later directing the Atlanta-based group Africa Sogaye and organizing the WAH WAH Drum and Dance Conference. He continues to teach and perform across the United States, Canada, and Europe, sharing the music and culture of Guinea.
