Field Trip: Midweek Workout: READ "About" for All Details

Greece Canal Park, Rochester · verified Sep 27
    See details

This workout may turn into a field trip with options to carpool or meet up in Niagara Falls, NY. Please RSVP if you plan to attend, share your intended pace and distance, and update your status if it changes. Check the discussion for plans and any updates, and note that only those marked as going are counted when considering cancellations or changes. The plan centers on a paved three-mile loop that you can repeat as many times as you like. Many people complete one or two circuits, and it is easy to shorten or lengthen as needed. Paces vary with weather, surface, and who shows up, so some add speedwork, some walk, and some run. New participants will not be left on their own unless that is their preference. Everyone starts together, and frequent doubling back on parts of the course means you will see others throughout the workout. The suggested route begins at a corner of the parking lot and generally keeps left around the park while skipping other lots and the dog park. Plans can shift based on the group, and sometimes an ad hoc route is chosen. If an event is labeled self-directed, usual leaders may not be present, but participants can still meet up and follow the route map. Park in the southwest corner of the lot near the tennis courts and the lodge by following the entrance road to its end. Bring your own nutrition, fluids, and anything else you need. A water fountain is available outside the lodge in summer. Wear suitable gear, carry your phone, and secure valuables in your trunk as recommended by police. Restrooms are available on site. Please be considerate of others by giving space, covering coughs and sneezes, and washing hands. If you are ill, stay home or keep enough distance to avoid exposing anyone. Participation is voluntary and you are responsible for your own safety. If no one confirms attendance in advance, the workout may be canceled. RSVP ahead of time so your input can be considered.

Opera Houses and Halls of the Genesee Country

Mendon Community Center, 167 N Main St, Honeoye Falls · verified Sep 27
    See details

At the Mendon Community Center, the Honeoye Falls–Town of Mendon Historical Society hosts a presentation by historian and educator Jane Oakes titled "Opera Houses and Halls of the Genesee Country." Oakes explores how communities across New York State built opera houses and public halls from the mid 1800s through the Depression, what actually took place inside them beyond grand opera, and how these venues shaped everyday social life. The talk highlights common architectural styles seen across a ten county area, notes buildings lost to fires or later development, and points out examples that still linger in local communities. She also maintains the largest known database of opera houses and halls in the state. Oakes brings more than five decades in historic education, beginning as a teen volunteer at the Valentown Museum in Victor under historian J. Sheldon Fisher. Her work includes teaching open hearth cookery, nineteenth century schooling, and architectural history at Genesee Country Village & Museum; serving as a Museum Studies and Local History teacher-consultant for regional BOCES Gifted and Talented programs; and leading eighteenth and nineteenth century foodways classes and demonstrations at museums and historic sites in four states. She spent five years coordinating school tours and education at the William Mills Mansion Museum in Mt. Morris. Her research helped secure National Register recognition for the Avon Opera Block and Avon’s Five Arch Bridge, and she has advised Western New York museums as well as groups and individuals restoring historic opera houses. Her reenactment experience spans the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, and the American Fur Trade era. She holds a BA in Theater with a minor in Anthropology, and an MA in History, and her illustrated programs often lead to return invitations. This meeting is open to the public, and the venue is accessible.

COMP Studios Fall 2026: Opening Reception October 2

C.O.M.P. Studios, 137 East Ave, Rochester · verified Sep 27
    See details

An opening reception introduces the current resident artists, Eujin V Ra and Agam Neiman, and the projects they are developing in the studios. Ra is advancing Pool of Life, a body of paintings and sculpture that reflects on memory, change, and the spiritual dimensions of everyday experience. Drawing on imagery of water, animals, and dreamlike terrains, the work weaves abstraction with a sense of place to consider how identity and daily life shape one another. Neiman is continuing plein air urban nocturne studies toward a series of large scale representational paintings that convey the subtle emotional character of specific places. Through the use of physically printed collage compositions, this work extends an exploration of motion, memory, and landscape as both subject and metaphor, focusing on the nonverbal qualities of fleeting moments often lost amid daily concerns. Open studio hours are scheduled on select days, and an artist talk with both artists is planned. Studio visits outside posted hours can be arranged directly with the artists.

Their chemistry can evoke touchstones from artists such as John Mayer, John Bonham, Phil Lesh, and Herby Hancock, and the result is a live show marked by raw power and an openhearted authenticity that is hard to forget after a first listen. Their camaraderie fuels original, signature moments that shine in a live setting.

Support Group for Emotionally Exhausted Christian Women

Piano Works Mall, 349 W Commercial St, East Rochester · verified Sep 27
    See details

In East Rochester, NY, The Quiet Room offers a small, structured support group for emotionally exhausted Christian women seeking Scripture-based guidance and a caring community. Women come to process emotional overwhelm, church hurt, anxiety and fear, grief and difficult seasons, unhealthy relationships, loneliness, spiritual uncertainty, and the work of rebuilding life with a biblical foundation. Each gathering includes guided conversations rooted in the Bible, prayer and reflection, emotional and spiritual support, a calm setting, and light refreshments. This is not a drop-in format. An application and registration through the website are required, and participants commit to consistent attendance. Each woman selects one group only, with separate English and Spanish options. Because the setting is intentionally intimate, capacity is limited to 6 to 8 women per group. It is not therapy or childcare, and it is not a loud church event. It is a facilitated space for women ready to heal, grow, and do the work. Applications are open and spots are limited.

Ashley McBryde brings the Into The Wild Tour to the Kodak Center in Rochester, celebrating her new album Wild. A GRAMMY, ACM and CMA winner and a member of the Grand Ole Opry, she is known for fearless songwriting that blends classic country with full-throttle rock. The album unfolds across 11 songs that reflect on growing up in the Ozarks, the strictness of a fundamentalist background, the consequences of heavy drinking and the clarity that came with choosing sobriety, landing at the moment just before she stopped drinking. Her work has earned broad acclaim from outlets like the Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone, SPIN and NPR, and her creative streak extends to Redemption, a nonalcoholic-forward bar concept on Nashville’s Lower Broadway. She hopes the music encourages listeners to reconnect with their boldest selves and long-held dreams. Tickets are available online or at the Kodak Center Box Office. Children under 2 do not need a ticket when seated on an adult’s lap. General parking across the street is $15 per vehicle, with limited premium spots next to the building at $25 per vehicle. See details

This matinee spotlights Popa Chubby, the New York guitarist born Ted Horowitz, bringing a fierce blend of blues, rock and soul honed over more than three decades. Active since 1994, he has earned a worldwide following with tempestuous, deeply felt guitar work and a style that is as gritty as it is soulful. His early years in the city’s punk scene, including performances with the avant performer Screaming Mad George and nights at CBGB alongside the Ramones, the Cramps and Richard Hell’s Voidoids, shaped a view of rock and roll as high-stakes theater. The blues remains his foundation, carrying forward the raw edge he associates with figures like Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and Little Walter. He often frames his sound as a collision of punk drive and blues fire, drawing lines from the Stooges to Buddy Guy, from Motörhead to Muddy Waters, and from Jimi Hendrix to Robert Johnson. Expect a matinee charged with big guitar tone, unfiltered emotion and the momentum of an artist intent on always pushing ahead.

Popa Chubby, the stage name of Ted Horowitz, brings a hard charging mix of blues, rock, and soul refined over more than three decades. Since the 1990s he has been a formidable guitarist, blending raw fire with deep feeling, and his sound remains as potent as ever. A commanding presence with a shaved head, inked arms, and a goatee, he has become one of the most recognized figures in modern blues. His roots trace back to the New York punk scene, where early gigs included backing the theatrical artist Screaming Mad George. Time spent around CBGB’s, with bands like the Ramones and the Cramps in the mix, and a stint with Richard Hell’s Voidoids, helped shape a style that welds punk energy to the power of classic blues. He often frames his approach as a collision of punk icons and blues greats, drawing on the spirits of the Stooges, Buddy Guy, Motörhead, Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, and Robert Johnson. The blues remains his bedrock, carried with an edge he connects to legends such as Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Little Walter. Known for pushing forward and carving his own path, he has built a growing worldwide following. Vanessa Collier

Beston Hall at Nazareth University, 4245 East Ave, Rochester · verified Sep 27
    See details

Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Vanessa Collier brings a sound rooted in classic Memphis soul, R&B, and blues. Her sixth album, Do It My Own Way, was crafted on analog gear with musicians playing together to capture a warm, old-school feel, complete with horn-forward grooves, layered vocals, and saxophone lines that add a subtle power to each track. The record ranges from the funk drive of Elbow Grease to the moody pull of Take Me Back and the rhumba sway of Just One More, while Shoulda Known Better stands out for its deep groove. Wild As a Rainstorm dives into retro soul with Hi Records legend Rev. Charles Hodges on organ and has been featured on Spotify’s Retro Soul playlist. Rosetta honors trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the title track pushes back against industry sexism, and closing song Warrior celebrates resilience and pays tribute to her mother. Collier wrote the songs, produced the project, arranged the horns and other parts, and performs on acoustic and electric guitars, alto and tenor saxophones, flute, and lead and background vocals. The album also features Laura Chavez, Scott Sutherland, Byron Cage, and Rev. Charles Hodges. A Berklee College of Music graduate who first toured with blues icon Joe Louis Walker before stepping out on her own, she is a twelve-time Blues Music Award nominee and a four-time winner, including honors such as Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year, Horn Player of the Year, and B.B. Neko Case

Water Street Music Hall, 204 N Water St, Rochester · verified Sep 27
    See details

Neko Case brings the Neon Grey Midnight Green Tour together with a solo performance from Destroyer. Case’s ninth album, Neon Grey Midnight Green, drew immediate praise for pairing a bold, full-band sound with an unusually intimate atmosphere. Recorded live, the mix preserves small in-room moments like breaths and the soft rustle of sleeves to keep the human touch front and center. Long recognized as a singular American songwriter, she keeps pushing into braver, more adventurous territory with work that is witty, surprising, and deeply felt. She produced the album herself and has spoken about the scarcity of women, nonbinary, and trans producers in the industry. She identifies as gender fluid and uses she and her pronouns. Destroyer’s set is solo, spotlighting Dan Bejar’s unmistakable voice and enigmatic writing. Since 1995 the project has continually shifted shape, moving from early indie folk colored by Bowie influences to broader experiments in sound and delivery. Highlights across the catalog include the theatrical intimacy of Your Blues, the cinematic glow of Kaputt, and later turns toward synthesizers and spoken passages on Have We Met and Labyrinthitis. One dollar from every ticket benefits Peer Solutions and its positive youth leadership and development program, which works to prevent harm before it starts and cultivate lifelong ambassadors for positive change.

“21 Months: The Story of Our Museum’s Reinvention” with Drew Saur (11/5/26)

Mendon Community Center, 167 N Main St, Honeoye Falls · verified Sep 27
    See details

At a meeting of the Honeoye Falls Town of Mendon Historical Society, Drew Saur presents “21 Months: The Story of Our Museum’s Reinvention,” sharing how a late 2023 review of policies led to a complete rethinking of the museum. What began as a long overdue, top-to-bottom inventory of roughly 15,000 collection items became a deeper examination of what truly belongs in the museum, shifting attention from age alone to clear relevance for the community. Volunteers embraced a simple guiding question about visitor expectations as they evaluated each object, a perspective encouraged by Trustee Gary Albright. Their work culminated in a comprehensive refresh of the exhibits, the first time in the museum’s 56 year history that everything was redone and the most significant transformation in three decades. Saur’s perspective is informed by a career at the intersection of technology and leadership. He serves as Chief Information Officer for The Palmer Family of Companies, teaches in the Software Engineering Department at RIT, and founded The Progressive CIO, a blog focused on technology leadership. He has built high performing engineering and IT teams with an emphasis on empathy and trust. He is president of the Historical Society and previously led the Mendon Foundation, a land trust that helped develop and maintain the Lehigh Valley Trail in collaboration with the Monroe County Parks Department. The program takes place at the Mendon Community Center. The venue is accessible and the meeting is open to the public.

Raised in Leonia, New Jersey, he crossed the Hudson as a child to witness 1960s icons from the British Invasion to Motown. Later years in rural Enterprise, Alabama tuned his ear to foundational blues by Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, and Howlin' Wolf, influences that continue to inform his writing and stagecraft. He first made his mark in the early 1980s with They Came From Houses on New York’s underground circuit at CBGBs, Folk City, and the Mudd Club, sharing stages with Marshall Crenshaw, Mink DeVille, the Stray Cats, John Hammond Jr., George Thorogood, and David Johansen. After stepping back from a record deal to focus on family, he directed films, wrote jingles, and honed his craft with insight from artists including Willie Dixon, Robert Lockwood Jr., Jonnie Johnson, Sammy Cahn, Bruce Springsteen, Van Walls, Richie Havens, and Jackson Browne. He also deepened his connection to African American culture and the music of the Sea Islands, performing at The Gullah Festival in Beaufort, South Carolina, before returning full time to the stage in the 1990s. An early independent release drew the attention of Mick Taylor of The Rolling Stones, who contributed to The Turning Point and toured with him. National recognition followed with Shadows and Cracks reaching Billboard’s Top 5 on Blind Pig Records, along with a 2010 collaboration with Sue Foley that also landed in the Top Five. Beyond the Crossroads was later named the top CD of 2012 by Alternate Roots Magazine. The Arson’s Match, recorded with Taylor at New York’s Bottom Line, earned three Blues Blast nominations and donated its proceeds to a charity honoring his late wife. Subsequent releases on his own label include Alabama Town, The Blue Flame, and Magnificent Heart, and he has been awarded a master’s degree in composition by the Vermont College of Fine Arts.

    See details

OFC's Broadway in Brighton Series presents a Series Add On production of Jim Henson's Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, returning by popular demand. This stage adaptation of the classic television special is inspired by the illustrated book by Russell Hoban and Lillian Hoban, with music and lyrics by Paul Williams and a book by Timothy Allen McDonald and Christopher Gattelli. The production features puppets designed and created by the Jim Henson Company and is presented at the OFC Creations Theatre Center. Vivian Bayubay McLaughlin, known from Disney's Out of the Box and Sesame English, stars as Mrs. Alice “Ma” Otter. Set in Frogtown Hollow just before Christmas, the story follows Ma and Emmet as they each secretly hope to win a local talent contest with a fifty dollar prize so they can buy the other a special gift. Emmet thinks about forming a jug band with his friends, which would mean putting a hole in Ma’s washtub, the very tub she uses to earn money doing laundry. Ma considers pawning Pa’s old toolbox to create a costume for the contest, even though Emmet relies on those tools for odd jobs. As the contest draws near, their choices test the limits of sacrifice and love, and they discover what truly matters during the holidays. The score by Academy Award winning songwriter Paul Williams has been praised by The New York Times. Run time is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes plus intermission. The production is suitable for all ages, with a minimum age of 5.
