Summer Concert: Sonido Clasico - Latin Jazz Orchestra

This free summer concert celebrates history through music as the Sonido Clasico Latin Jazz Orchestra brings the vibrant sounds of the Golden Age of Latin music to the museum. Founded in 1998 by guitarist and director Carlos Castillo, the ensemble performs faithful arrangements inspired by the great New York big bands of the 1950s, drawing on the legacy of Machito’s Afro Cubans, Tito Puente, and other jazz icons. Castillo’s career includes performances with La Playa Sextet, Machito and the Afro Cubans, the Tito Rodriguez Orchestra, the Tito Puente Orchestra, and the Joe Cuba Sextet, and he appears on classic recordings such as Ray Barretto’s King Creole (1966) and Machito and Dizzy Gillespie’s Afro Cuban Moods (1975). The concert is included with museum admission, which is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors, and members receive free entry. Advance registration is required to reserve seating, and capacity is limited, with registration by phone at 631-727-2881 x100. Supported in part by the New York State Council on the Arts and by Suffolk County Economic Development.

Devon Allman’s Blues Summit

Devon Allman brings together a powerful slate of blues and rock artists for a summit that celebrates the sound he grew up with. The son of Gregg Allman, he carries the Allman family tradition into the present through expressive guitar work and songwriting, honoring the Southern rock and blues heritage that shaped him. Sharing the stage is Jimmy Hall, the unmistakable voice of Wet Willie. Raised in Mobile, Alabama, he formed the band in the late 1960s and helped deliver hits like Keep on Smilin’. Hall is known for commanding vocals and dynamic harmonica, and his collaborations with artists such as Jeff Beck highlight his range across blues, rock, and R&B. Adding even more depth is Larry McCray, a noted guitarist and singer who was born in Magnolia, Arkansas and raised in Saginaw, Michigan. Emerging in the late 1980s, he blends contemporary blues with rock and soul influences, pairing a resonant voice with expressive guitar tone. The lineup also features Laka Soul, a St. Louis vocalist recognized for a powerful delivery that draws from the city’s rich musical roots, combining classic blues elements with a soulful style that connects with audiences. As retired professors who have danced for 12 years and taught beginners for more than 8, they bring insights from multiple study trips to Buenos Aires with well known teachers, and they prioritize refined movement, elegance, musicality, and partner connection. Tango grew from the port neighborhoods of Argentina and Uruguay about 150 years ago, carrying both street vitality and theatrical polish. At heart it is a walking dance, built from forward, backward, and side steps, with the leader moving ahead and the follower stepping back. The dance evening offers beginning dancers a welcoming space to practice what they are learning and to enjoy time on the floor together.

Larkin Poe w/ special guests The Record Company

Larkin Poe brings a high-energy blend of Southern rock, blues, and Americana to Cain Park alongside special guests The Record Company. Building on a Grammy win for Blood Harmony, the sister duo steps forward with Bloom, created with co-producer Tyler Bryant and shaped by reflection, honesty, and a deep connection to American roots music. The new material explores self-acceptance and individuality within a contemporary blues and rock framework. The Record Company joins the lineup with the close-knit chemistry of Chris Vos, Alex Stiff, and Marc Cazorla, delivering blues-tinged guitar work, tight rhythmic drive, sturdy bass lines, and vivid storytelling. Queen of Hearts

The Queen of Hearts drawing is ongoing with a current jackpot of $4,848, and the next winning ticket would receive $2,908. The total increases week after week until the Queen of Hearts is revealed. Here is how it works. A full deck plus two jokers is placed into 54 sealed, numbered envelopes and displayed in a locked case. When buying tickets ($10 for three), participants choose a number from the envelopes that have not yet been opened and write that number on each ticket. One ticket is pulled at random, and the envelope with the matching number is opened to reveal the card inside. If it is the Queen of Hearts, the ticket holder wins 60 percent of the jackpot for that drawing. If not, the pot rolls over and grows for the following week. Tickets are available at the Legion on Friday nights. Mail-in participation is also accepted by sending a check payable to American Legion Post 803 - Queen of Hearts. Include your phone number, the envelope number or numbers you want opened if your ticket is selected, and the requested N&A. Beginner's Argentine Tango Class

Beginner-friendly Argentine tango instruction takes place at CLE Urban Winery with retired professors Ann Dobyns and Charles Scillia. They bring 12 years of dancing experience and more than 8 years of teaching newcomers, along with multiple study trips to Buenos Aires with well-known teachers. Their approach centers on social tango as danced in the city’s clubs and salons, highlighting refined movement, musicality, elegance, and a strong sense of connection. The session explores tango as a social dance with roots in the port neighborhoods of Argentina and Uruguay going back at least 150 years. It can feel both down-to-earth and theatrical, lively and intimate. At its core it is a walking dance, with the leader stepping forward and the follower stepping back, built from three essentials… forward, back, and side. The evening also offers a supportive setting for new dancers to practice what they are learning and spend time dancing together.

THE SAMMY DELEON AND JACKIE WARREN QUARTET, WITH KIP REED & CHRIS BURGE

The Sammy Deleon and Jackie Warren Quartet brings an evening of Latin jazz to B Side Lounge, with Kip Reed and Chris Burge completing the ensemble. Sammy DeLeon, a widely recognized timbales player in Northeast Ohio and a mainstay of the regional Latin jazz community, grew up in Lorain and began performing professionally as a teenager after being introduced to the instrument by an older brother. His early work included Cobra, Orquesta Charambo and Impacto Nuevo, and for the past decade he has led Sammy DeLeon y Su Orquesta, opening for El Gran Combo, Tito Rojas and Tony Vega. He also mentors student percussionists in Latin rhythms, with his group often nicknamed Sammy Salsa College. Pianist Jackie Warren, originally from Colorado, came to Ohio to study classical piano at Oberlin Conservatory with Sedmara Zakarian Rutstein, while also pursuing jazz arranging, composition and theory with Wendell Logan, who encouraged further study with Neal Creque and Kenny Davis. She later earned a master’s degree in classical piano performance from Cleveland State University under Andrius Kuprevicius and Daniel Barber, continued lessons with Creque, and has made Cleveland her base. Warren performs as a soloist, leads a trio with Peter Dominguez and Ron Godale, arranges and plays salsa and Latin jazz with Sammy DeLeon y Su Orquesta, and has appeared with artists including David Fathead Newman, Clark Terry, Frank Morgan, Bobby Watson, Jane Bunnett and the Spirits of Havana, Los Munequitos de Matanzas, Tito Puente, Jr., Jimmy Heath, the Jazz Heritage Orchestra and the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. The Body + Big|Brave at Grog Shop

At Grog Shop, The Body appears with BIG|BRAVE for an all-ages show. Advance tickets are $20 and increase to $22 on the day of the show, with an additional $3 charge at the door for guests under 21. The Body, the duo of Lee Buford and Chip King, is known for a colossal, boundary-pushing sound. Over more than two decades they have developed a distinct approach that reshapes rhythm, dynamics, and texture, often pulling apart conventional song forms. Their album I’ve Seen All I Need To See dives deep into distortion at both its extremes and subtleties, resulting in one of their starkest and most formidable statements. BIG|BRAVE created OST as a markedly austere project conceived like a score for a film that has yet to exist. Working from broad concepts rather than prewritten music, the trio improvised with minimal tools and stepped away from their usual setup. Guitarist Mathieu Ball even built a custom stringed device from salvaged piano strings, called The Instrument, whose voice threads through the record and grounds its sound. Some of those strings came from a discarded piano that had been lingering in the hallway of Robin Wattie’s tattoo studio, tying the music to tangible, earthbound materials.

King Buu & Eliy Orcko 10 year anniversary

Eliy Orcko and King Buu reunite for a milestone performance that reflects a decade of growth, sonic exploration, and underground perseverance. Their connection began in Cleveland’s DIY scene at the now-closed Blank Slate, then unfolded through years of shared stages, unpredictable sets, and a bond shaped by chaos and sincerity. Even as their careers moved in different directions, they kept collaborating and backing each other, including a joint appearance at Cleveland’s Twibrite in 2020 during the height of the pandemic. In recent years, Eliy Orcko expanded work beyond the stage by founding We Good Records, a platform committed to creative independence and sustainable paths for emerging artists. King Buu refined a signature Bizarro Rock sound, showcased on Kaiju Stuu & The Destruction of King Buu, a high-energy, genre-spanning release that marks a confident return. Their journeys meet again at Grog Shop, a well-known destination venue in Cleveland, for a single evening honoring ten years of growth, divergent paths, and creative camaraderie. More than a show, it celebrates the endurance of underground music, the power of artistic self-determination, and the lasting ties formed through shared beginnings.

Les Savy Fav with Suitor and Beast Killer at Grog Shop

Les Savy Fav brings a bill with Suitor and Beast Killer to Grog Shop. This is an all ages show with admission set at $25 in advance and $30 on the day, plus a $3 charge at the door for anyone under 21. The long-running post-hardcore group crafted its sixth album, OUI, LSF, in singer Tim Harrington’s Brooklyn attic, a compact workspace he jokingly compared to a strange barn that was created over the remnants of black mold and plywood. Working in that unconventional room sparked a fresh start. The title and cover art were nurtured from a patch of grass, underscoring how the project developed in an organic way. It has been more than a decade since the previous release, Root for Ruin, not due to a split but because life took precedence and the band wanted to return with something more ambitious. Harrington notes it took time to reach that headspace. Harrington, Seth Jabour, Syd Butler, Harrison Haynes, and Andrew Reuland have been collaborating since their Rhode Island School of Design days in 1995.

Violent Femmes

This celebration of 45 years of Violent Femmes spotlights acoustic punk trailblazers who started by busking on Milwaukee streets, channeling Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps and the Velvet Underground while aiming to out-rock any unplugged act. A chance performance outside a Pretenders show led Chrissie Hynde to bring them on stage that night, which drew the attention of Richard Hell in New York, earned a rave in the New York Times, and led to a record deal and worldwide touring. Their self-titled debut notched a rare Billboard milestone by entering the charts already certified platinum eight years after release, and the band became a fixture at festivals, clubs, and theaters in more than 20 countries. Though they never appeared on MTV’s Unplugged, the series took inspiration from their stripped-back style. Their raw sound and forthright lyrics have influenced a wide range of artists, including Pink, Keith Urban, The Smiths, The Pixies, John Cusack, Mark Morris, and Wim Wenders. Decades on, they continue to draw new listeners on tour and create music with staying power.

Young Forager: Kids Workshop | Ages 4-7

Imaginative children can explore a certified organic farm with youth educators Trish and Cara in a playful, food-focused workshop set among fields, greenhouses, and an orchard. The session begins with a body and mind check-in to encourage mindfulness and joy. Participants spend time outdoors discovering how food is grown while taking in the sights, sounds, scents, and textures of the farm. They move through the fields and greenhouses to learn about fruiting crops, bee hives, and tractors. Using plentiful foraged herbs and vegetables, each child creates paper to take home. They also enjoy a freshly foraged salad made from edible weeds, vegetables, and herbs, highlighting the value in plants that are often overlooked. Participants should be entering Kindergarten in the fall and be comfortable attending without a parent.
