Patricia E. Kelly, President and CEO of Ebony Horsewomen, Inc., leads a conversation about the bond between people and horses and how equine-assisted psychotherapy can nurture mental wellness, emotional growth, and self-awareness. Drawing from her organization’s work, she shares the impact of programs that serve urban youth and families through horseback riding, horse care, and therapeutic services. The talk is shaped by inspiration from Black Cowboys in America: Photographs by Ron Tarver and Robert Peterson: Journeys. It also introduces the newly established Mary Fields Horse and Heritage Museum at the Ebony Horsewomen Equestrian & Therapeutic Center, a place dedicated to learning about and honoring African American horsemen and horsewomen. Through the life of Mary Fields, known as Stagecoach Mary, the first African American woman to carry mail on a Star Route for the U.S. Postal Service, the museum preserves stories often left out of the mainstream and echoes themes found in the work of Tarver and Peterson, centering the perspectives of women and communities of color. Kelly, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and lifelong cowgirl who founded Ebony Horsewomen in 1984, leads nationally recognized initiatives in equine therapy and education. The organization focuses on culturally competent care, expanding access to riding, wellness programs, and certification training while advancing awareness of Black equestrian heritage and community healing.
