Meditation Class, 7 weeks 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm Fridays

    133 E Franklin St, Dayton · verified Oct 11
    See details

This seven-part meditation series moves step by step from foundational skills to a fuller, integrated practice. It opens with focused work on breathing, introducing multiple techniques, their effects, and how to select an approach that supports the moment. The journey continues by engaging imagination through guided imagery and visualization that encourage relaxation, ease tension, and redirect attention away from stress toward intentional presence. Attention training follows, building the ability to rest on one chosen point, notice mental drift without criticism, and gently return to focus. Next comes sound and vibration as practical anchors, using elements like chanting, toning, rhythm, and resonance to calm the mind, steady the breath, and cultivate a deeply embodied experience. Participants then practice relating to thoughts in a new way, watching them come and go without chasing, fighting, or labeling, and allowing them to pass. In the final stages, the course weaves concentration, breath, body awareness, observation, and mindfulness into a cohesive meditation routine that fosters steadiness and presence. It concludes by extending awareness beyond formal practice, noticing subtle shifts within oneself, the environment, and interactions, and applying that clarity to respond with greater intention in daily life.

Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum, 118 Woodland Ave, Dayton · verified Oct 11
    See details

Experience an evening lantern walk through the cemetery that traces Dayton’s darker chapters by visiting the graves of victims and perpetrators. The route explores real cases like the deathbed confession tied to 18-year-old Christine Kett, questions around whether Rose Shafor disguised herself as a man to aid a lover in a crime, the unresolved killing of Julius Kruse, and speculation about the Cincinnati Ripper’s presence in Dayton. The stories are drawn from actual murder accounts and include graphic details that may not be suitable for all audiences. This two-hour experience can be strenuous, so it is not recommended for children, older adults, or anyone who may have difficulty walking long distances over hilly, uneven grass. Meet at Eichelberger Plaza at the cemetery’s main gates. Parking is available both inside and outside the gates. Wear comfortable walking shoes and consider bringing water. Tours take place rain or shine, except in the event of thunder or lightning. Reservations are required. A suggested $10 donation supports the Woodland Arboretum Foundation and its restoration, preservation, horticultural, and educational efforts that help maintain Woodland as a cultural resource for Dayton and Ohio.

Gem City Pinball League - Season 18

Canal Street Arcade and Deli, 308 E 1st Street, Dayton · verified Oct 11
    See details

At Canal Street Arcade and Deli in Dayton, Gem City Pinball League returns for Season 18 with a clear format and community-first guidelines. Participation includes a $20 fee per session along with a weekly coin drop. League nights take place on Mondays, excluding most holidays and any periods when the league is not in session, and members are notified of any schedule changes. Each week, players are grouped in threes or fours to play four randomly selected machines, earning points based on placement, with pairings rotating among fellow members. The season spans eight weeks of regular play, followed by two nights of finals. A cutoff based on overall standings determines placement into A or B finals, and every participant qualifies for one of these tournaments. Finals formats may adjust depending on league needs and the number of players. Reliable attendance is important. Makeup weeks are not offered, but each player receives one drop week, removing the lowest score from the season total. Participants are asked to check in each Monday to confirm their status for that evening. Missing three weeks in a season results in removal from that season’s rankings and ineligibility for finals, with limited exceptions at the discretion of league operators when communicated promptly and supported by valid reasons. Players who reach that absence limit may still play for the remainder of the season, though scores will not be recorded, and they can return officially at the start of the next season if space allows. Respectful conduct is expected at all times. Disrespectful behavior, arguing over rulings, or failure to follow guidelines can lead to disqualification or removal. Mechanical issues are a natural part of pinball and rulings related to them are final. The focus is on fair competition, clear rules, and a welcoming atmosphere for everyone.

Among their brood are Arturo, the Aquaboy with flippered limbs and an ambition to dominate on the scale of a conqueror like Genghis Khan, the conjoined sisters Iphy and Elly, Oly, an albino with a hunchback, and Chick, who appears ordinary but possesses mysterious abilities that make him both cherished and dangerous. As their act travels through overlooked corners of the United States, they inspire fierce devotion and spark deadly hatred, while calculated power plays fuel an intense rivalry among the siblings. Meditation Class

Inner Peace Place, 133 E Franklin St, Dayton · verified Oct 11
    See details

Explore meditation across seven sessions that build skills step by step. The series opens with breathwork, introducing several ways to use the breath to influence how you feel and when each approach might be helpful. Next comes a session on imagination, using guided imagery and visualization to encourage relaxation, ease tension, and redirect attention from stress toward a more intentional mindset. The third class develops steady attention on a single point, practicing how to notice wandering thoughts without judgment and gently return to focus. The fourth meeting turns to sound and vibration, experimenting with chanting, toning, rhythm, and resonance to calm the mind, connect with the breath, and cultivate a deeply felt practice. The fifth class works with thoughts themselves, learning to observe them without chasing, resisting, or judging so they can pass on their own. The sixth session weaves the skills together, combining concentration, breath, body awareness, observation, and mindfulness into a more complete practice that supports steadiness and presence. The final class expands awareness beyond seated practice, noticing subtle shifts within yourself, your surroundings, and your interactions so you can respond to life with greater intention.

The Wellspring Elder Circle welcomes people entering the later chapters of life, a period many traditions, including spiritual and Indigenous ones, honor as a time to deepen wisdom, offer service, mentor others, and live with greater purpose. Different cultures recognize this passage in their own ways; for some, women step into it after menopause, and for many men it begins around ages 50 to 55, when attention shifts from achievement to legacy, guidance, and community. Elderhood is more than a number, it is a calling to share what experience has taught, to continue growing, to support others, and to cultivate meaningful connection and purpose. If you feel drawn to this season through age, life experience, or a desire to grow, connect, and contribute, this circle is open to you. This month the gathering is planned at Lori McElroy’s home, with the full address to be shared under the event as it gets closer.

A relaxed drop-in sewing day offers friendly assistance while you work at your own pace. Participants may bring projects already in progress, ones they hope to start, or anything that needs clarification, and they are welcome to sew alongside others for a bit of community and conversation. This is not a private lesson or a formal class, so guidance will be shared among attendees rather than devoted to just one person. Expect helpful feedback on your work, plenty of room to spread out, and time to focus on stitching. Suitable activities include mending, getting help with a pattern, giving attention to a project that needs focused time, tackling repetitive tasks like seam ripping, cutting out a pattern, or pressing a quilt square, as well as hand embroidery and pattern tracing.

At Needle, Ink and Thread - A Modern Sewing Studio in Dayton, this beginner-friendly session welcomes participants ages 13 and older with no prerequisites. It is designed for anyone new to sewing on a machine or returning after a long break. You will get comfortable with your machine and learn threading and accessory basics. Instruction covers cleaning and maintenance, selecting and using needles, winding and inserting a bobbin, identifying accessories and presser feet, understanding seam allowance, troubleshooting common issues, building a simple sewing kit, and core sewing terminology. Bring a notebook and paper, a sewing machine if you have one, thread, an empty bobbin if you are using your own device, scissors, your machine’s manuals, and a basic kit with pins and extra needles. Recommendations include the Brother CS6000i machine and KAI N5230 9 inch bent handle scissors. Scrap fabric for practice, a 101 handout, and practice sheets are provided. A machine can be borrowed if you indicate the need during checkout. Enrollment is capped at five students to allow focused guidance.
