New visitors complete a brief registration with basic details such as name, ZIP code, and household size. Because the pantry collaborates with FreeStore Foodbank, clients are asked to self-declare whether their income meets certain guidelines. Families above those thresholds are still served, and volunteers explain which items are available to take home. Celebrated for dramatic, symphonic arrangements and inventive reinterpretations of pop favorites, the group was among the first American bands to fuse these styles, helping set the stage for the rise of heavy metal. Their breakout take on The Supremes’ “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” sparked widespread attention and led to tours with Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, and Led Zeppelin. More than five decades on, they continue to carry their distinctive sound to stages across the country.

Cincinnati’s Blue Wisp Big Band marks 45 years of big band jazz at Caffè Vivace in Walnut Hills. The ensemble features Jeremy Long and Jamie Walkenhauer on alto saxophone, Brent Gallaher and Dan Drees on tenor saxophone, and Larry Dickson on baritone saxophone. The trombones are Jeff Owen, Clarence Pawn, and Brian Stevens with Gary Langhorst on bass trombone, the trumpets are Jeff Folkens, Hank Mautner, John Zappa, and Kim Pensyl, and the rhythm section is Steve Schmidt on piano, Mike Sharfe on bass, and Jim Leslie on drums. Founded in 1980 by drummer John Von Ohlen and trumpeter Don Johnson, the band took its name from the original Blue Wisp Jazz Club. Von Ohlen came to Cincinnati after years with major jazz orchestras including those led by Stan Kenton and Woody Herman, and he teamed with Johnson to assemble the horn section. With Steve Schmidt and Michael Sharfe already working with Von Ohlen at the club, the rhythm core formed quickly. Regular Wednesdays at the Blue Wisp followed, recording began in 1981 with an LP sponsored by WKRC, and four more albums appeared on Fred and Helen Morr’s Mopro label. Those LPs were later reissued by Sea Breeze in the mid 1990s, including a set recorded in Los Angeles during a 1984 West Coast tour, and distribution brought attention and airplay across the United States and Europe. Alumni include trumpeter Tim Hagans and bassist Lynn Seaton. The group kept its Wednesday tradition at the Blue Wisp until the club closed in 2014, then appeared at Japp’s Annex downtown, had a brief run at Pirate’s Den in Westwood, and spent three years at Urban Artifact in Northside before establishing a new home at Caffè Vivace. A $15 drink and food minimum per person per set applies if the party’s beverage purchases do not meet the minimum. Seats may be released without refund if check-in has not occurred within 15 minutes after a set begins. Tickets are non-refundable. If attendance is not possible, a one-time transfer to a future Blue Wisp Big Band performance of equal value is available when requested at least 24 hours before the performance start.

His catalog spans the punch of Ball of Fire, Losing You and Cloud Across the Sun to the slow-building, wah-soaked textures of Deadly Kiss. Recordings such as Waiting for the Rain to Fall and I Will Always Be Your Shelter showcase crystalline phrasing and a soulful melodic voice. Recent studio work has featured contributions from Livingstone Brown on bass, Chris Taggart on drums, and Richard Watts on vocals.

The Ohio Sauerkraut Festival brings the Waynesville community together for more than a weekend of entertainment. Explore Englewood Dam during an open house that offers a rare look behind the scenes of this essential structure. Speak with the professionals who care for the dam and hear how routine upkeep and future projects are designed to keep it strong. View an exhibit that reflects on the 1913 Flood and the history of the dam’s construction, and learn how the wider Flood Protection System operates and how Englewood Dam plays its part. The dam is an earthen embankment spanning the Stillwater River in northern Montgomery County near the City of Englewood, with U.S. Route 40 crossing along the top. Construction began in February 1918 and was completed in December 1921. It is the largest of the Miami Conservancy District’s five dams, containing approximately 3,500,000 cubic yards of earth, comparable in volume to the Great Pyramid of Giza.

At Yellow Springs Brewery's Barrel Room, this fall fundraiser supports John Bryan Community Pottery, a local nonprofit studio that has offered community access to ceramics since 1962. The event focuses on raising funds for the future rebuild of the studio’s Cone 10 gas reduction kiln, Big Alice. The 40-cubic-foot gas kiln, built in 2017, has been fired more than 60 times. With an average kiln life of about 100 firings, the studio is preparing for a rebuild in the coming years. Attendees can explore silent auction offerings from a range of local businesses and shop donated handmade pottery, with a portion of bar sales contributing to the cause. The studio provides Cone 10 firing through classes and memberships and has saved $13,000 toward a $40,000 goal by 2028. Instruction centers on targeted work that builds coordination, balance, strength, and endurance, including isolated limb exercises, smooth movement transitions, and guidance on designing a progressive training plan. Designed for teams that use or plan to use an electric dog treadmill, the format is offered on two separate days. Working teams must be comfortable training around unfamiliar people and in a bustling setting, be able to follow and take a food lure, walk on an electric treadmill, remain calm and non reactive toward people they do not know, and rest quietly in a crate within the training area. Since its start in 2017, Cincinnati Coffee Festival has grown into a leading celebration of coffee in the Midwest.
