The Spiegel Grove Squires face the Akron Black Stockings on the grass just behind the Hayes Home. This matchup showcases base ball as it was played during the Civil War era, when the sport was first gaining popularity, and features the Spiegel Grove Squires, the vintage base ball team at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums. A refreshment tent will be on site, and admission is free. Presented with support from Whirlpool Corp.

A free public program marks the opening of an exhibition of hand-carved wooden sculptures of military working dogs at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums, created in honor of veterans and their sacrifices. Ohio artist James Mellick will share insights into his work and its meaning during a talk, followed by time to view the installation in the museum rotunda. Guests will gather in the museum auditorium, where light refreshments will be available, then hear Mellick’s presentation before moving into the galleries. Capacity is limited to 50 and advance RSVPs are required. Titled “Warrior Dogs & Faithful Companions,” the installation features nine canine figures, each linked to a different military campaign and reflecting the wounds borne by their human counterparts. The work seeks to spark conversation and support psychological healing for veterans and families, highlight the ongoing needs of those who are physically and psychologically wounded through the human canine bond, and honor the service and heroism of military working dogs. The craftsmanship is not intended to soften the realities of war. Instead, it underscores the dignity of those who have given life, limb, and spirit in service to the nation. Mellick is an Ohio artist whose career spans both the studio and the university, and he holds an MFA from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with a major in painting, a minor in sculpture, and extensive work in printmaking. After the special program, entry to the exhibition is included with regular admission, with free access for Hayes Presidential members. Support is provided by the Art & Kate Doust Charitable Fund, and the exhibition is part of Hayes Presidential’s America 250 programming with partial funding from Albrechta & Liebold, Ltd., Attorneys at Law.
