Traditional Irish tunes at an easy, social tempo fill the Butterfly Garden at Cook Park in a relaxed summer session that runs weekly from June through September, weather permitting. The gathering takes place on the lawn near Shelter 4 at the entrance to the Butterfly Garden. A shady spot is chosen on warm days, a sunnier place if it is cool, and the roof of Shelter 4 offers cover when it rains. Musicians come together to share fiddle tunes and other traditional pieces. Anyone in the circle may suggest the next tune or set, and the TrailJams Tune of the Week is often part of the mix. The pace is generally moderate. The focus is on playing by ear and from memory, though glancing at sheet music is fine. Typical acoustic instruments include fiddle, concertina, guitar, bodhran, tin whistle, flute, and mandolin. There is no required audience, though park visitors often pause to listen. Participants typically bring a chair and an instrument. The park is a pleasant place for a walk or picnic before or after the music, and companions have room to explore the trees, trails, and river if they want a break from the tunes. There is no firm stop time, so the music may continue a bit longer when the energy is flowing. Food and drink options in downtown Tigard make it easy to extend the outing afterward.

Disney’s Newsies brings the real-life 1899 New York newsboys strike to the stage, following Jack Kelly as he rallies a group of young sellers to push back against a publisher’s price increase. The story unfolds through athletic dance numbers and spirited songs, highlighting friendship, determination, and the power of standing together. The musical features music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and a book by Harvey Fierstein. It is adapted from the Disney film by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White and was originally produced on Broadway by Disney Theatrical Productions. Performances take place at Deb Fennell Auditorium.
