The Great Gatsby: A One-Man Performance

WVU Canady Creative Arts Center, 1 Fine Arts Dr, Morgantown · verified Oct 2
    See details

Literature to Life brings F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby to the stage in a one-man interpretation at the WVU Canady Creative Arts Center. This adaptation immerses audiences in Long Island and New York City during the early twentieth century, reflecting the Jazz Age and Prohibition while exploring class divides, the tension between inherited wealth and new fortunes, questions of gender and race, environmental concerns, and the cost of chasing the American Dream. The performance features Simon Rabatin, a New York based actor and visual artist whose recent work includes playing Tom in These Shining Lives with Poor Mouth Theatre Company and a supporting role in Aiden Cronin’s film The Birds Tell Me All There Is To Know. He trained at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and with Shakespeare and Company. Literature to Life is a performance-centered literacy initiative that creates professionally produced stage versions of American classics. Founded more than three decades ago as the educational wing of the American Place Theatre and now operating independently, the organization shares the words of diverse authors with students and audiences nationwide to inspire reading and help young people see themselves as authors of their own stories.

    New & Noted

Carnegie Library Lecture Hall, 654 S Neville St, Pittsburgh · verified Oct 2
    See details

A New & Noted lecture from Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures features Ayad Akhtar and centers on his most daring work to date, The Radiance. The novel begins with a baffling crash on a country road that leaves a writer confronting experiences that blur revelation and delirium. Drawn toward a brilliant colleague, he is swept into a campus controversy that endangers them both, while a hidden family history comes to light and the truth behind the collision, its brutality and its aftermath, gradually emerges. The narrative moves between rural America and Europe, between Islamic and Christian worlds, and between intimate drama and large metaphysical questions, asking what has fractured in our moment and what light remains. Akhtar is a celebrated novelist and playwright, honored with the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Edith Wharton Citation of Merit for Fiction, and an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His books include American Dervish and Homeland Elegies, which The New York Times named among the ten best of 2020, and his plays include Disgraced, Junk, The Who & The What, The Invisible Hand, and McNeal. The Radiance is available for preorder from Mystery Lovers Bookshop.

3rd Annual Colonial Classic Fundraising Tournament

Paradise Pike, 605 W Pike St, Canonsburg · verified Oct 2
    See details

The 3rd Annual Colonial Classic supports the Robert Morris University Bowling Team and introduces a singles handicap format that lets every participant compete individually while contributing to the cause. Competitors will bowl four games on four different pairs, then drop the lowest score. The highest three game total with handicap determines the winner. A challenge oil pattern will be announced closer to the event. Handicap is calculated at 80 percent of 206, the challenge pattern equivalent of a 220 standard average. Each bowler’s highest USBC sanctioned average from the 2025 to 2026 season will be used. If no sanctioned average exists for that season, an unsanctioned average may be accepted with a dated league sheet. Bowlers without an average will be assigned 158 for women and 185 for men. All averages will be converted to challenge pattern figures using the USBC conversion table, and the Tournament Director has final authority on averages. Youth bowlers may participate with a completed USBC Eligibility Consent form that waives prize money. Alternative awards will be offered for youth entrants. The entry fee is 50 dollars, allocated as 5 dollars for lineage, 25 dollars to the prize fund, and a 20 dollar donation to RMU Bowling. Payout is one in five entries, based on a minimum field of 50. Optional side action will be available, including scratch pot games, scratch and handicap brackets, and a second game blind handicap doubles option. RMU Bowling alumni who compete will receive a complimentary Colonial Classic tournament t-shirt. Registration and sponsorship details will be shared soon.
