    Vienna Teng

Uptown Theater, Providence · verified Jul 31
    See details

Vienna Teng brings an intimate night of storytelling in song, the kind that lingers like a heartfelt conversation. Her repertoire spans the haunting choral work “The Hymn of Acxiom,” heard in classrooms and corps performances and even surprise public choirs, to the sparkling rush of “Stray Italian Greyhound,” which has sparked creative fan videos and dialogue across divides. “City Hall” has become a quiet anthem for many coming out, “Level Up” has fueled dissertations, first books, and tough recoveries, “Harbor” often accompanies first dances and graduations, and “Lullabye For A Stormy Night” has settled into countless bedtime routines. Her warm mezzo was first widely noticed with Waking Hour, which led to features on NPR and a late night television debut, and she has continued to reinvent her sound through the string-woven intimacy of Warm Strangers, the airy hush of Dreaming Through the Noise, the expansive palette of Inland Territory, and the sleek electronics of Aims. She also wrote music for the stage in The Fourth Messenger. Listeners may catch the adventurous songcraft of inspirations like Paul Simon and Tori Amos, yet her voice and vision remain unmistakably her own. Beyond music, she pursued climate solutions in graduate study and professional roles, experiences that informed the intricate 2024 project We’ve Got You, a pair of songs designed to play together or separately. In 2025, Grist recognized her among notable climate innovators for building a music and action community that helps fans make tangible changes, from first e-bikes to workplace sustainability efforts and local clean energy wins. On tour, she often leads venue-based workshops that audiences describe as energizing and deeply encouraging. This appearance at Upstairs at Uptown offers an evening where musical craft, curiosity, and real-world engagement meet onstage.
