November Artist in Residence - Rachel Gardner

Bluffton · FLOW Gallery + Workshop, 75 Boat House St

FLOW Gallery + Workshop hosts Artist in Residence Rachel Gardner, a Houston-based artist and professor whose three-dimensional papier-mâché grows from a lifelong connection to nature. The residency opens with a welcome reception where attendees can meet the artist, explore examples of her intricately detailed work inspired by the landscapes around her home, preview the techniques planned for her time at Palmetto Bluff, and watch a live demonstration of her papier-mâché process. A hands-on birds workshop guides participants from building an armature to painting fine details to complete a papier-mâché bird, with a relaxed pace and a lunch break that provides drying time. Another session focuses on creating with tools found outdoors, encouraging experimentation with sticks, leaves, acorns, and other natural materials to explore texture and mark making. The final workshop invites families to design and craft playful papier-mâché ornaments, offering an easygoing, all-ages setting where children and adults can create together. Rachel Gardner transitioned from painting to sculpture after earning her BFA and MFA, developing a practice that blends painterly precision with dimensional form. She teaches at both undergraduate and graduate levels and will guide participants through hands-on explorations of papier-mâché, creative form, and using natural tools for ink-based artwork.
