    September Artist in Residence

Flow Gallery + Workshop, 75 Boat House St, Bluffton · verified Sep 4
    See details

FLOW Gallery + Workshop hosts an Artist in Residence program featuring Annie Moran, where visitors can meet the New Orleans based artist and hear how mural work and the Louisiana bayou influence her creative process. The schedule includes a nature journaling workshop in the Conservancy Classroom that ventures into Palmetto Bluff to observe local surroundings. Participants receive a bound sketchbook and learn field journaling practices used by artists and scientists, along with insights into the creative and wellness benefits of this approach, then create sketches with charcoal, pencil, and ink. A step by step floral watercolor session at FLOW Gallery + Workshop focuses on painting a pink Japanese magnolia blossom. Paints, paper, and brushes are provided, and techniques such as wet in wet and glazing are covered. No drawing experience is necessary, as an outline is traced before developing an individual watercolor piece. Raised in rural Louisiana and seasoned by years in New York’s fashion industry, Annie now concentrates on watercolor, murals, and wallpaper and textile design that celebrate the landscapes, culture, and spirit of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. During this residency, she leads immersive experiences that include a Conservancy walk and sketch, fundamentals of mural and painting, and Lowcountry inspired techniques that encourage exploration of nature through observation and creative expression.

    October Artist in Residence

FLOW Gallery + Workshop, 78 Boat House St, Bluffton · verified Sep 6
    Free

FLOW Gallery + Workshop hosts a warm welcome for Artist in Residence Brandon Finnorn, featuring a free reception with art and conversation. Guests can get an early look at his oil paintings that honor the natural world, using nuanced color to show how light moves across fur, feathers, and scales. The reception also offers insight into his path from a Gulf Coast childhood to medical training, followed by a full-time shift to painting. A bird painting workshop at FLOW Gallery + Workshop highlights his start to finish approach. It begins with reference photography and time observing birds, then moves through blocking shapes, building layers of color, and adding detail and a sense of motion. The session supports both seasoned artists and beginners, and it invites a fresh perspective on the birds of Palmetto Bluff. A fish painting workshop in the Conservancy Classroom draws on his underwater photography. Participants receive step by step guidance to craft a painting that captures light filtering through water and catching on scales and sediment. Bringing a photo of a favorite catch is encouraged so each piece can carry personal meaning. All skill levels are welcome. Based in Madisonville, Louisiana, Brandon Finnorn paints the wildlife and seascapes of the Gulf Coast. He grew up along Alabama’s waterways, earned a medical degree, and dedicated himself fully to art in 2017. Photography and underwater exploration inform his vibrant, detailed canvases. His work has appeared in We Are Fly Fishing, In The Loop, and Mobile Bay Magazine, and he has collaborated with Orvis and Simms. During this residency at Palmetto Bluff, he guides participants in exploring coastal landscapes and wildlife through observation, sketching, and painting techniques.

The reception features a live demonstration and a preview of techniques she plans to share during her time at Palmetto Bluff. The residency continues with hands-on sessions at the gallery. December Artist in Residence - Maria Baldwin

FLOW Gallery + Workshop, 75 Boat House St, Bluffton · verified Sep 6
    See details

FLOW Gallery + Workshop hosts floral designer Maria Baldwin for an Artist in Residence program centered on seasonal botanicals from her Wimbee Creek Farm. It begins with a welcome reception that spotlights her farm-grown approach and offers a close look at sample pieces that showcase how she blends color and texture. The residency continues with three hands-on sessions. A winter wreathmaking workshop covers how to layer, shape, and finish a wreath, along with practical tips to help it stay fresh. An evergreen garland class uses fresh greens with colorful blooms and branches from her garden to teach techniques for arranging eye-catching accents suited to a mantle or a table. A seasonal centerpiece workshop guides attendees through establishing forms, balancing hues and textures, and keeping arrangements vibrant throughout the holidays. Maria Baldwin, together with Kristina Crisologo, creates lush, artful designs rooted in the history and sense of place of Wimbee Creek Farm, which supplies seasonal blooms to designers, wedding planners, and flower lovers across the Lowcountry.
