September Artist in Residence - Annie Moran

FLOW Gallery + Workshop, 75 Boat House St, Bluffton
    See details

A welcome reception at FLOW Gallery + Workshop introduces September Artist in Residence Annie Moran and the bayou landscapes that shape her practice. Raised in rural Louisiana and seasoned by years in New York’s fashion world, she returned to Southern surroundings to create expansive murals, paintings, and wallpaper designs that bring the feel of nature into daily life. A Nature Journaling workshop in the Conservancy Classroom invites participants to observe local forms with methods used by scientists and artists to document the natural world. Each person receives a bound sketchbook, learns techniques that support creativity and well-being, then heads outdoors in Palmetto Bluff to make field sketches using charcoal, pencil, and ink. A Step-by-Step Floral Watercolors session at FLOW Gallery + Workshop centers on a pink Japanese magnolia blossom. Paints, paper, and brushes are provided, and Annie demonstrates techniques such as wet in wet and glazing while guiding participants toward a finished watercolor. No drawing background is necessary, since the artwork begins with a traced outline that becomes a one-of-a-kind piece. Based in New Orleans, Annie Moran focuses on watercolor, murals, and surface design inspired by the environments and culture of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. After more than a decade in New York’s fashion industry, she returned home to concentrate on painting and on wallpaper and textile work. Throughout this residency at Palmetto Bluff, she leads immersive experiences that include a Conservancy walk with sketching, fundamentals of mural and painting, and Lowcountry inspired approaches, encouraging exploration of place and nature through close observation and creative expression.

Guests can hear about his path from a Gulf Coast upbringing and medical training to a full time studio practice, and see how he explores light as it plays across fur, feathers, and form. FLOW Gallery + Workshop hosts floral designer Maria Baldwin for an Artist in Residence program centered on seasonal botanicals from her Wimbee Creek Farm. It begins with a welcome reception that spotlights her farm-grown approach and offers a close look at sample pieces that showcase how she blends color and texture. The residency continues with three hands-on sessions. A winter wreathmaking workshop covers how to layer, shape, and finish a wreath, along with practical tips to help it stay fresh. An evergreen garland class uses fresh greens with colorful blooms and branches from her garden to teach techniques for arranging eye-catching accents suited to a mantle or a table. A seasonal centerpiece workshop guides attendees through establishing forms, balancing hues and textures, and keeping arrangements vibrant throughout the holidays. Maria Baldwin, together with Kristina Crisologo, creates lush, artful designs rooted in the history and sense of place of Wimbee Creek Farm, which supplies seasonal blooms to designers, wedding planners, and flower lovers across the Lowcountry.
