Kim Jorgensen’s paintings fill the Grand Hallway at Memphis Botanic Garden with layered surfaces and tactile detail. Working chiefly in acrylics and mixed media, Jorgensen has spent over a decade developing a mostly self-taught practice shaped by early experiences with fiber crafts and needlework. Sources of inspiration include faith and the history of art, along with years teaching about the ancient and medieval worlds and the history of the church, where art served as a lens for understanding people and ideas. Jorgensen continues to teach Bible stories, relying on imagery and historical context to communicate. The exhibit reflects a fascination with moments when light, both literal and symbolic, breaks through in history, in nature, and across a painted surface, and it pursues themes of beauty, renewal, and hope through color, texture, and expressive gesture.
