Wildlife Wednesday

At Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center, a Wildlife Wednesday program spotlights the Ornate Box Turtle, one of two box turtle species that may be seen in the park alongside the three-toed box turtle. The presentation explores the turtle’s range across the central United States, from western Indiana through eastern Texas and Louisiana to parts of northeastern New Mexico. Because of their small size, young turtles face many threats from predators such as crows, raptors, ravens, domestic cats and dogs, opossums, raccoons, skunks, snakes, and even adult box turtles, and their main defense is closing tightly into the shell. Individuals can live roughly three to nearly four decades, and warmer incubation conditions tend to result in more females. The program also covers diet and reproduction. Ornate box turtles eat what is available season by season, including grasses, berries, insects like caterpillars, grasshoppers, and beetles, earthworms, fruits, vegetables, and carrion, which helps reduce competition for food. Females typically lay a single clutch each year in shallow sandy nests, most often 4 to 6 leathery, elliptical eggs, with incubation lasting about 60 to 70 days and hatching by late summer. Cooler nests produce mostly males while warmer nests yield mostly females, it takes about 8 to 10 years to reach maturity, and many eggs do not survive to adulthood. A live Ornate Box Turtle will be featured, and the program is free and open to all ages.

Operation 36 Junior Academy - Sept. 2026 Season

Young golfers ages 6 to 13 can build skills and confidence at Eagle Pointe Golf Club through the Operation 36 Junior Golf Program, a progressive and supportive approach that develops abilities one hole at a time. Each season lasts five weeks and costs $175 per player. Participants receive one practice session each week on Tuesdays and take part in two Saturday tournaments during the season. Wildlife Wonderings -- the North American River Otter

This installment of Wildlife Wonderings at Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center spotlights the North American river otter, a playful semi-aquatic mammal commonly found in area waterways. The session highlights how these animals are built for life in and around water, from dense, protective fur that holds warmth during chilly swims to short legs with webbed feet, a streamlined body with a flattened head, and a strong tail that powers efficient movement. River otters can remain submerged for up to eight minutes. Attendees will hear how sensitive whiskers help detect prey in murky conditions and how agile bodies and clawed feet aid in quick turns and firm grips. Their coats are darker on the back with lighter tones on the belly and face. On land they can run up to 15 miles per hour, and their well-known sliding on mud or snow, along with tail chasing and water play, also strengthens social bonds and gives young otters a chance to practice hunting skills. The program covers size and growth, noting adults can reach three to four feet in length including the tail and weigh between 11 and 30 pounds, with males typically larger and the tail comprising about one third of the length. It also explores their wide range across much of Canada and the United States, with occurrences in parts of Mexico near the Rio Grande and Colorado River delta, and their ability to thrive in ponds, marshes, lakes, rivers, and estuaries wherever food is plentiful. Preferred sites offer clean water and limited disturbance, and dens are often repurposed burrows or hollows along shorelines with underwater entrances. Natural predators include bobcats, alligators, coyotes, raptors, and other large hunters. Diet and daily needs are another focus, from fish, crayfish, crabs, frogs, turtles, and birds and eggs to aquatic plants and small mammals like muskrats or rabbits. With high metabolisms, otters eat often. Communication includes whistles, yelps, growls, and even screams, along with touch and body language, and they mark territory with a strong scent from glands near the base of the tail. Breeding typically occurs in late winter or early spring, litters usually number one to three pups that are born blind and learn to swim after about two months, and adults live alone or in small groups. Lifespans average eight to nine years in the wild and can extend to 21 years under human care. The presentation also addresses history and conservation, acknowledging heavy fur trapping that led to declines, the role of reintroduction in recovery, and ongoing threats from habitat loss and water pollution. This program takes place in the Nature Center, is free of charge, and welcomes participants of all ages.

Those who need volunteer service hours, including Texas Master Naturalists and other community organizations, may count their participation. Expect a roughly 2 mile outing lasting 2 to 3 hours on a route that varies from sandy and uneven to paved. Ages 10 and up are welcome. Closed toed shoes, a reusable water bottle, and binoculars are recommended, and loaner binoculars are available. Meet in front of the nature center.

The program features Lincoln, an ambassador Eastern Copperhead, for a close look while explaining how to recognize this species by its beige or pink background color and the 13 to 20 dark brown hourglass bands that help it disappear among fallen leaves. Attendees learn when and where copperheads are most active in the Houston area, including their cool-weather habit of warming themselves on roads and trails, and how excellent camouflage often keeps them out of conflict. The talk covers typical size, common urban hideouts like wood, rock, and leaf piles, and the useful role they play by feeding on rodents. Safety guidance is included, emphasizing the importance of leaving snakes alone, how most bites occur, and the need for prompt medical care if a bite happens. This free program is open to Agkistrodon enthusiasts of all ages.
