    OAR - Expressive Writing Lab

    Killeen · Killeen Creators, 701 N 10th St

Operation Art of Recovery brings artists and members of the military community together to explore creativity as a pathway to healthy distraction, transformative healing, and a better quality of life. Its Expressive Writing Lab centers on building inner calm and resilience through therapeutic expression and meaningful connection. The emphasis is on an enjoyable, purposeful experience and growing personal “recovery capital”, and strong pieces of writing and performance often emerge along the way. The sessions are facilitated by award-winning spoken word artist Richard “Shake the Poet” White and Killeen Creators’ founder and Executive Director, Kristin Wright, both of whom draw from their own recovery journeys. Richard is a veteran, martial arts instructor, poet, published author, and acclaimed slam poet in recovery from trauma and substance misuse, using writing and performance to process childhood and service-related experiences and to support others on similar paths. Kristin, known as “Momma Kay,” is a survivor of child and domestic abuse in Mental Health and Addiction Recovery, a lifelong writer of poetry and plays with several productions staged at colleges and universities nationwide. She has used words to move beyond difficult circumstances and to reshape her personal story over time. Together, they bring years of healing, writing, and teaching experience and are committed to helping participants find their words and voice. Each lab typically opens with safe space guidelines, followed by a brief icebreaker reading or activity, an introduction to the day’s prompt, and focused time to write. Participants are then invited to share their work and receive feedback if they wish, enjoy an open mic segment, and end with a thoughtful wrap-up. Writers and poets from the entire community are welcome, regardless of military affiliation. In-person participation is encouraged, and a Zoom option is available. Late arrivals are asked to slip in quietly to maintain the flow. Light snacks and water may be provided when donated.
