Student athletes carry far more than practices and games. Many are also managing academics, pressure to perform, identity development, social expectations, and the shift into a new school year. Created to support the whole athlete, this no cost, community centered gathering welcomes student athletes, families, and the surrounding community as they get ready for the classroom and upcoming sports seasons. Wellness focused resources, community organizations, and family friendly activities come together in a supportive setting that values both performance and mental wellbeing. Participants can connect with local businesses and organizations, explore experiences that promote wellness, and take part in conversations about athlete mental health and preparation for the school year. The aim is for athletes and families to leave feeling supported, informed, and connected. Hosted by Next Play Wellness, a Texas based mental health and wellness practice that serves student athletes, families, and communities through therapy, education, workshops, and wellness initiatives.

1877 Elissa's Homecoming Reception

Marking the return of the Official Tall Ship of Texas, this evening reception at the Galveston Historic Seaport welcomes ELISSA back to her home port. Guests can step aboard for on-deck tours, meet the crew, browse commemorative merchandise, and raise a glass in celebration. Admission includes entry to the pier and access to the Ship to Shore interactive exhibit, with more to experience throughout the seaport. The program features live music by Del Mar, on-site tattoos by Moonlight, fundraising Message in a Bottle raffles with prizes such as hotel stays and VIP experiences, beer and wine sales, and crew meet and greets. Pre-sale admission guarantees access to the Galveston Historic Seaport, and as capacity allows, tickets will also be available at the entrance on the night of the event. A free public watch party for the ship’s arrival will take place at Pier 21 that same day. ELISSA, an 1877 square-rigged iron barque, was rescued from a scrapyard in Piraeus, Greece by the Galveston Historical Foundation, brought to Galveston in 1978, and restored by staff and volunteers. By 1982 she returned to sea as a sailing museum. Today she is one of only three ships of her kind that still actively sail, welcomes more than 40,000 people each year, holds National Historic Landmark status, and stands as a symbol of the Gulf Coast’s origins as a seaport and working waterfront. As part of Galveston 250, ELISSA is making strategic port calls en route to Sail 250 celebrations, engaging prominent maritime audiences. Her presence elevates Galveston’s profile during this milestone and highlights the value of preserving authentic historic vessels as living storytellers that connect innovation, resilience, and international exchange.

Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum

Ocean Star Museum Family Days

This themed family day features hands-on STEM activities that explore energy education and the role of offshore energy systems. Admission is free for this event, and children 12 and under receive complimentary entry to the museum on all Family Days. It takes place at the Ocean Star, a retired jack-up drilling rig that worked in the Gulf of Mexico from 1969 to 1984 and drilled more than 200 wells before being acquired by the OEC in 1995 and, after refurbishment, opened as a museum in 1997. The museum is self-guided with videos, informative displays, and interactive exhibits throughout, and most visits take about an hour and a half. Family Days are held on the second Sunday of each month.

CLGMS hosts its monthly meeting at Helen Hall Library. The featured speaker will be announced soon, and details will be updated when available. Mah Jongg! Galveston presents two separate single-day tournaments at Moody Gardens on Galveston Island, planned with comfort and thoughtful touches in mind. Take part in one or both days and enjoy two relaxed evening sessions for casual play. Each tournament day features six rounds, with cash awards for top overall finishers, $25 prizes for each high round, and $25 prizes for special hands. The 13th annual Kids Fish 2 tournament from West End Anglers welcomes young anglers to The West End Marina & Restaurants for a family-friendly day on the water. Designed for kids and teens, this youth-focused competition allows any number of children to fish together from a boat, and adults may help as needed. Guides are permitted. Participants can fish by boat, wading, kayak, or from the bank within the defined tournament boundaries, and launching from any location or fishing from shore is allowed. Wading is permitted as long as anglers remain within sight of their group, up to 200 yards. Keep at least 50 yards from other boats, kayaks, or waders unless given permission. Entry is $20 per youth angler and $30 per teen angler, and all entry fees are returned to registered anglers in the form of prizes. Every registered angler receives a captains bag. Adults must register their kids, and a parent or legal guardian must be present with each angler at all times. All federal and state regulations apply, and all fish must be legally sized; turning in an undersized or oversized fish will result in disqualification. Fish must be caught on a rod and reel, and anglers may use artificial, live, or dead bait. Do not accept a fish from or give a fish to another angler. In the event of a tie, the first angler to weigh prevails. A fish entered in a youth category may not be used in more than one category. The weighmaster’s rulings are final. Divisions and awards include separate opportunities for Youth anglers ages 12 and under and Teens ages 13 to 15. Youth compete for the heaviest and the lightest fish of any species, with awards through third place in each, plus first-place honors for the largest by weight in slot red, trout, and flounder. Contestants must be in the weigh-in line before it closes, and late arrivals will not be accepted. Awards are presented to winning anglers. Rhett Miller Live at the 1859 St. Joseph's Church

Rhett Miller makes his St. Joseph’s debut with an evening centered on the songs that have defined his long career. For more than three decades he has led Old 97’s, a band honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 Americana Awards held at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. After early independent releases, the group signed with Elektra Records and issued Too Far to Care, and continued with albums including their 13th studio release, American Primitive, on ATO Records in the spring of 2024. Between band projects, Miller has recorded eight solo albums, most recently 2025’s A lifetime of riding by night. Beyond the stage, his writing has appeared in Rolling Stone, Bookforum, Sports Illustrated, McSweeny’s, The Atlantic, and Salon, and he has published two children’s books through Little Brown Young Readers. His podcast, Wheels Off: Conversations about Creativity, has surpassed 200 episodes and features notable guests from across the arts. Screen work includes appearances in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, where he performs a song co-written with director James Gunn, and his music has been widely placed in film, television, and advertising. He teaches songwriting at The New School in Manhattan, leads an annual Songwriting Is Magic retreat in the Catskills, and has taught workshops at the Sanibel Island Writers Conference, Chicago’s Old Town School Of Folk Music, and Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. Angels Among Us Luncheon

The Angels Among Us Luncheon celebrates the people whose generosity and dedication have sustained a mission of supporting women in recovery for more than four decades. Hosted at The Grand Galvez, this gathering highlights outstanding service with the Angel Award, presented this year to Lodie Massey. Lodie has served as a physician assistant and educator, training future PAs at UTMB, and she designed and launched substance use disorder treatment and prevention programs for The Gulf Coast Center. Her community life has included theater work in Smithville and La Grange, along with volunteer service in hospice and a community clinic. On the Island, her current efforts center on spiritual growth as past president of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, civic engagement as a deputy voter registrar, leadership with the Rotary Club and the Tree Conservancy, and hands-on support with Meals on Wheels. She also serves as outreach chair for Galveston Island Democrats. For much of the past 40 years she has been a constant champion of ADA Women's Center, contributing as board member, advisor, acting director, and board president. As she steps back from the board, the luncheon honors her as a healer, leader, icon, and inspiration. An Honorable Mention also recognizes the women of St. Michael's Episcopal Church for their long-standing commitment to hosting the annual Celebration of Freedom Dinner for ADA Women's Center alumni, a tradition that has brought connection and hope to women in recovery for more than 30 years.

2026 West Bay Redfish Showdown

Now in its 18th year, this West Bay redfish tournament gathers anglers at The West End Marina & Restaurants for competition, live music by the Blockade Runners, and a fundraiser benefiting Shriners Hospitals for Children - Galveston. Entry is $100 per angler, with an optional $20 side pot and an optional $200 team calcutta. Teams can include up to two anglers, and solo competitors are welcome and should plan to weigh two slot redfish. Participants may launch from any location, and guides are permitted. Fishing by boat, wading, or kayak is allowed within the West Bay boundaries, spanning navigable waters west of the Causeway Rail Bridge to the SH 332 Bridge. Artificial lures are required, all fish must be caught on rod and reel, and tipping hooks with bait, chumming, or other attractants is not allowed. Teammates who wade must remain within sight, no farther than 200 yards apart. Boats must give each other at least 50 yards of space unless permission is granted. Exchanging fish between teams is prohibited. Tournament communications are not allowed, except to request help for a breakdown or emergency and officials must be notified. Kayak anglers may briefly exceed the wading distance limit only to secure a fish in a live well, then must return within 200 yards of their partner. All participants are subject to polygraph testing, and the weighmaster’s rulings are final. Sponsors and organizers are not responsible for accidents, injuries, loss, damage, or theft. In the case of bad weather, the event may be rescheduled, and if it cannot be held, entry fees will be refunded. Weigh-in takes place at West End Marina, and only two fish may be presented. Standings are determined by the heaviest pair of slot redfish, and all fish must meet TPWD regulations. In a tie, the team that weighs earlier prevails. Live redfish in good condition receive an 8 ounce bonus per fish toward the team stringer. A side pot fish may also count toward the overall stringer. The optional side pot rewards the slot redfish with the most spots and pays 60 percent, 30 percent, and 10 percent. Qualifying spots must be larger than a pencil eraser and cannot be connected. If one person on a boat enters the side pot, everyone on that boat must enter. Plaques are awarded to the top three in the side pot, and a $200 calcutta side pot is also available. Trophies and cash go to the top five teams. With a field of 100 anglers, projected payouts are $2,600 for first, $1,800 for second, $1,265 for third, $667 for fourth, and $334 for fifth. An awards presentation, raffle, and auction round out the day, with music from the Blockade Runners setting the tone.

The four-time Emmy winner, also recognized with Critics Choice and WGA honors, is a writer, comedian, and actor known for smart, incisive comedy. Recently he served as host, writer, and executive producer of the Netflix talk show Everybody's Live with John Mulaney, a follow-up to Everybody's in LA, the six-night live comedy series presented during the 2024 Netflix Is A Joke Festival. In December 2024 he appeared on Broadway in All In: Comedy About Love with Fred Armisen, Richard Kind, and Renee Elise Goldsberry, and he is set to appear in the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios film Madden directed by David O. Russell. This stop on Mister Whatever spotlights his stand-up on stage.

HTX Card Show - Pokemon, TCG & Sports Cards in Galveston (Houston Area) - October 2026

The HTX Card Show returns to the Houston area with its first-ever stop on Galveston Island at the Moody Gardens Convention Center. This edition is the largest yet, showcasing more than 400 vendor tables filled with sports cards, Pokemon, One Piece, other TCGs, comics, collectibles, sealed product, singles, slabs, and memorabilia. Attendees can buy, sell, and trade, dig through value boxes, chase modern grails, hunt vintage treasures, rip wax, and connect with collectors from across Texas on the Gulf Coast. Celebrity guests and athlete autograph appearances are part of the weekend, with additional announcements to be shared closer to the event. The venue offers free parking for easy access to the show floor. VIP admission provides early entry on both days along with double raffle entries, and children 5 and under are admitted at no cost.
