The Angels Among Us Luncheon celebrates the people whose generosity and dedication have sustained a mission of supporting women in recovery for more than four decades. Hosted at The Grand Galvez, this gathering highlights outstanding service with the Angel Award, presented this year to Lodie Massey. Lodie has served as a physician assistant and educator, training future PAs at UTMB, and she designed and launched substance use disorder treatment and prevention programs for The Gulf Coast Center. Her community life has included theater work in Smithville and La Grange, along with volunteer service in hospice and a community clinic. On the Island, her current efforts center on spiritual growth as past president of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, civic engagement as a deputy voter registrar, leadership with the Rotary Club and the Tree Conservancy, and hands-on support with Meals on Wheels. She also serves as outreach chair for Galveston Island Democrats. For much of the past 40 years she has been a constant champion of ADA Women's Center, contributing as board member, advisor, acting director, and board president. As she steps back from the board, the luncheon honors her as a healer, leader, icon, and inspiration. An Honorable Mention also recognizes the women of St. Michael's Episcopal Church for their long-standing commitment to hosting the annual Celebration of Freedom Dinner for ADA Women's Center alumni, a tradition that has brought connection and hope to women in recovery for more than 30 years.

Now in its 18th year, this West Bay redfish tournament gathers anglers at The West End Marina & Restaurants for competition, live music by the Blockade Runners, and a fundraiser benefiting Shriners Hospitals for Children - Galveston. Entry is $100 per angler, with an optional $20 side pot and an optional $200 team calcutta. Teams can include up to two anglers, and solo competitors are welcome and should plan to weigh two slot redfish. Participants may launch from any location, and guides are permitted. Fishing by boat, wading, or kayak is allowed within the West Bay boundaries, spanning navigable waters west of the Causeway Rail Bridge to the SH 332 Bridge. Artificial lures are required, all fish must be caught on rod and reel, and tipping hooks with bait, chumming, or other attractants is not allowed. Teammates who wade must remain within sight, no farther than 200 yards apart. Boats must give each other at least 50 yards of space unless permission is granted. Exchanging fish between teams is prohibited. Tournament communications are not allowed, except to request help for a breakdown or emergency and officials must be notified. Kayak anglers may briefly exceed the wading distance limit only to secure a fish in a live well, then must return within 200 yards of their partner. All participants are subject to polygraph testing, and the weighmaster’s rulings are final. Sponsors and organizers are not responsible for accidents, injuries, loss, damage, or theft. In the case of bad weather, the event may be rescheduled, and if it cannot be held, entry fees will be refunded. Weigh-in takes place at West End Marina, and only two fish may be presented. Standings are determined by the heaviest pair of slot redfish, and all fish must meet TPWD regulations. In a tie, the team that weighs earlier prevails. Live redfish in good condition receive an 8 ounce bonus per fish toward the team stringer. A side pot fish may also count toward the overall stringer. The optional side pot rewards the slot redfish with the most spots and pays 60 percent, 30 percent, and 10 percent. Qualifying spots must be larger than a pencil eraser and cannot be connected. If one person on a boat enters the side pot, everyone on that boat must enter. Plaques are awarded to the top three in the side pot, and a $200 calcutta side pot is also available. Trophies and cash go to the top five teams. With a field of 100 anglers, projected payouts are $2,600 for first, $1,800 for second, $1,265 for third, $667 for fourth, and $334 for fifth. An awards presentation, raffle, and auction round out the day, with music from the Blockade Runners setting the tone.

The FishWestEnd Winter Trout Series opens with Tournament 1 at The West End Marina & Restaurants, highlighting the heaviest three fish trout stringer per team. Teams consist of up to two anglers with a per angler entry fee, and guides may compete. Fishing is allowed by boat, personal watercraft, kayak, or while wading within the stated boundaries. Artificial lures with rod and reel are required, and tipping hooks with bait, chumming, or other attraction methods are not permitted. State regulations apply, and any trout used for scoring must measure at least 15 inches. Teams may launch from any location before fishing begins while observing no wake zones. Keep a respectful distance of at least 50 yards from other competitors unless permission is granted, and do not exchange fish or information with other teams or outside sources. Wading is allowed when teammates remain within sight, up to 200 yards apart. Shore based entrants should use a light in low light conditions for safety. Weighing and verification follow a video format using the official Catch Commander scale. Each video must show a zeroed scale, the entire fish, a locked final weight that is read aloud, the audible code word, and a successful release. Teams may submit more than three videos, with the top three counting toward the official stringer, and videos must arrive by the stated deadline. The code word is announced on the event page the day before. Teams return to the marina for an official weigh slip, attendance confirmation, results review, and polygraph checks, followed by awards at West End Restaurant & Sand Bar. Paid participants who check in during weigh in and awards receive a gift card for use at the marina. Payout is awarded to the top five teams by check or electronic transfer after successful polygraph, and may expand with larger participation. On a 50 team field the projected awards are first $3,250, second $2,250, third $1,250, fourth $750, and fifth $500. An optional Big Trout side pot is available at $20 per angler with a 60, 30, and 10 percent split, and earlier submitted weights break ties. If one teammate enters the side pot, both must enter. Fish from a team’s three fish stringer may also count for the side pot. Plaques go to first through fifth place teams and to the top three in the side pot. All participants are subject to polygraph testing, the weigh master’s rulings are final, and any protest requires a nonrefundable $300 fee for a secondary polygraph. Ties in the main standings are decided by check in order. One team member must attend a captain’s meeting at Serious Tackle to have the tournament scale calibrated. The Winter Trout Series spans four events and the Team of the Year title is determined by combined weights across all tournaments. Series entry is $200 per angler or $400 for a two person team and must be paid before the first event, with one substitute allowed for a single event for an additional series entry. Organizers are not responsible for accidents, injuries, or property loss. If bad weather interferes, the tournament will be rescheduled, and if it cannot be held all entry fees will be refunded. All fish used for scoring must be released immediately after weighing.
