    Expressive Writing Lab

    Killeen Creators, 701 N 10th St, Killeen · verified Jul 31
    See details

Operation Art of Recovery brings artists and members of the military community together to explore how creativity can support healthy distraction, deep healing, and a better quality of life. This expressive writing lab is designed to nurture inner calm and resilience through therapeutic writing and meaningful connection. The emphasis is on having a rewarding experience and strengthening personal recovery capital, and participants often find that memorable poems and performances take shape along the way. Sessions are led by award-winning spoken word artist Richard “Shake the Poet” White and Killeen Creators founder and Executive Director Kristin Wright, both of whom have relied on writing and performance in their own recovery. Richard is a veteran, martial arts instructor, poet, published author, and acclaimed slam poet who has used poetry and performance to process childhood and service-related trauma, and to reach others navigating transformation. Kristin, known as “Momma Kay,” is a survivor of child and domestic abuse who is in mental health and addiction recovery. She has been writing poetry and plays since middle school, with several works produced at colleges and universities across the country. Over time, words helped her move beyond circumstances she could not control when younger and reshape the story she tells about herself. Each lab follows a welcoming rhythm that includes a review of safe space guidelines, a brief icebreaker, an introduction to the day’s prompt, dedicated writing time, and an opportunity to share with optional feedback. An open mic provides space for voices to be heard before a thoughtful wrap-up. Writers and poets from the broader community are invited to take part, whether or not they have a military connection. In-person participation is encouraged, and joining by Zoom is also available. Snacks and water may be offered when donations make them possible.
