A naturalist leads a guided walk on the Swaner Preserve that highlights wetland science, native plants and animals, and the preserve’s history. Seasonal wildlife sightings are possible, including abundant birds, elk, and at times nesting sandhill cranes. Advance registration is required, walk-ins are not accepted, and group size is limited to 15 participants, with registration closing the day of the walk. The route is suitable for all ages on mostly flat terrain with a slight uphill grade, though tall grass, uneven footing, and wet ground can be challenging for some children and seniors. Participants who prefer not to complete the entire tour are welcome to turn around at any point. When snow is present, the walk takes place on snowshoes, which can be rented at the EcoCenter for $2.50 for members and $5 for nonmembers. Please come prepared for the weather. In spring, summer, and fall, wear sturdy shoes or boots and long pants, bring water, and pack sun protection such as sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. In winter, bring boots, snow pants, a warm coat, gloves, a hat, sunglasses, and a water bottle. Dogs are not allowed on these guided tours to protect sensitive wetland habitat.

Experience RC rally racing at the Seven Canyons Fountain in Liberty Park, where a mixed-surface course of concrete and grass with jumps and tight technical features is set up to challenge both driving skill and vehicle tuning. Participants of every experience level are welcome. Parking is available near the Tracy Aviary, then walk into the park past the amusement rides and look for the fountain on the left. The first car entry is free, and each additional car is 5 dollars cash. Racing follows a timed stage format with drivers running individually against the clock. Depending on turnout there may be multiple stages, overall results are based on combined times, and the quickest total in each class earns the top spot. Classes are divided by scale from 1/16 to 1/6. Rally 1 is a pro category for 1/10 scale 4WD rally cars with brushless power and up to 3S, with no tire restrictions. Rally 2 is a sportsman category for 2WD or 4WD rally cars with brushed systems and up to 2S, also with no tire restrictions. The Open class welcomes any scale or drivetrain, including custom builds, buggies, short course trucks, and bashers. Arrma Grom categories group similar models such as Typhon, Mojave, and Granite, with brushed and brushless motors separated into their own divisions, and up to 3S allowed without tire limits. Vehicle guidelines require a rally-style body except in the Open class, a working throttle return with a fail-safe recommended, and passing a basic tech inspection. Only rubber tires are permitted, tire additives are not allowed, and track conditions may lead to additional restrictions. Drivers are expected to marshal flipped or stuck vehicles, blocking or interference is prohibited, and unsafe driving can lead to penalties or disqualification. Time penalties include five seconds for a missed gate and ten seconds for cutting the course, unsportsmanlike conduct may incur penalties at the race director’s discretion, and a DNF counts as maximum stage time plus a penalty. Awards emphasize bragging rights. Helpful items include a race-ready RC car, batteries and a charger, spare parts and tools, along with a chair, shade, and water. The State RoomSaturday Morning Nature Walks
Experience a naturalist-guided walk on the Swaner Preserve that delves into wetland science, native plants and animals, and the area’s history. Wildlife sightings vary by season, with chances to observe abundant birds, elk, or even nesting sandhill cranes. Pre-registration is required, walk-ins are not available, and tours are limited to 15 participants. This outing is suitable for all ages and follows mostly flat terrain with a gentle uphill section. Expect tall grass, uneven footing, or wet ground at times, which may be challenging for some young children and some seniors. Participants are welcome to turn around early if needed. Dogs are not permitted because the route passes through sensitive wetland habitat. When snow covers the Preserve, the walk takes place on snowshoes. Rentals are available from the EcoCenter for $2.50 for members and $5 for nonmembers. Please come prepared for the weather. In spring, summer, and fall, wear sturdy shoes or boots and long pants, and bring water and sun protection such as sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. In winter, bring snow gear including boots, snow pants, a warm coat, hat, gloves, sunglasses, and a water bottle. Driving and parking directions are available.
Swaner Preserve and EcoCenterCanyon Riding Basics (August Event) -- Learn to Handle Some Curves!
A supportive, skills-focused group ride introduces motorcyclists to the fundamentals of canyon riding with an easy, safety-first approach. Expect guidance on leaning, reading curves, and picking smooth exit lines, all aimed at building confidence on winding mountain roads without pushing limits. The ride begins and ends at the Hogle Zoo overflow parking lot, where a quick pre-ride talk covers strategies for staying within your comfort zone while enjoying the twisties. The route heads up Emigration Canyon over Little Mountain Summit, continues east into East Canyon, crests Big Mountain Summit, and flows down to East Canyon Reservoir. From there it turns north toward Morgan for a relaxed stretch through the valley, hops briefly onto I-80 to the Henefer exit, then retraces the path back to the starting point for a short debrief. Plan for roughly 100 miles of riding. The intention is to keep moving, with a possible rest in Morgan and optional photo opportunities at Little Mountain Summit or East Canyon Reservoir if the group decides to stop. Any extra stops will add to the overall time on the road. Riders should arrive prepared. Bikes need to be in good working order, including tire condition and pressure, brakes and pads, a non-sticking throttle, and a well-maintained chain or belt. Mountain weather can run cooler, so dress for changing conditions. Fuel up beforehand, as there are no planned gas stops and everyone should be able to comfortably cover about 100 miles on the fuel they bring. Attendance will be capped, and RSVPs may close once capacity is reached. Only those marked as going will be counted for a spot; marking interested does not reserve a place.
