Instruction covers the strengths and limitations of the shotgun, how to set up the gun, sighting options, choosing appropriate ammunition, understanding and managing patterns for your needs, controlling recoil, and performing efficient loading under pressure. Core blocks include firearms safety and foundational skills such as grip, sight picture, and trigger control, along with recoil management, administrative and emergency loading and unloading, confirming point of impact and patterning, live fire exercises, clearing malfunctions, ammunition selection, and working from cover or concealment. Participants should bring a reliable shotgun, with 12 gauge preferred and 20 gauge acceptable. Because the class emphasizes fast, aimed shots on multiple targets, a traditional full buttstock is recommended. Rifle style stocks with pistol grips are acceptable, while pistol grip only shotguns are not permitted for safety reasons. A side saddle shell carrier is strongly recommended, ideally a Velcro attached style.
