"Snack and Learn: Bringing Dino-Birds to Life"

Waupaca Area Public Library, 107 S Main St, Waupaca · verified Sep 27
    Free

Discover the link between dinosaurs and birds at a free, in-person talk at the Waupaca Area Public Library in Waupaca, Wisconsin. Birds now thrive across the globe, and long before modern species emerged, some dinosaurs began developing feathers. Using powerful X-rays, researchers are teasing out chemical traces in celebrated dino-bird fossils, including Archaeopteryx, to reveal how these animals lived. The speaker, Uwe Bergmann, a professor in the Physics Department at UW-Madison, specializes in developing and applying novel X-ray techniques that draw on the most powerful sources. His work spans studies of fossils, water, how plants split water to produce the oxygen we breathe, and ancient manuscripts such as the Archimedes Palimpsest. Charcuterie boards will be available to enjoy during the presentation. No registration is required, and the talk will not be available virtually.
