WineStyles Shoppes at Prairie Lakes, Sun Prairie · verified Sep 30
    See details

A book club at WineStyles Shoppes at Prairie Lakes focuses on The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde. The novel envisions Great Britain around 1985, where time travel is commonplace, cloning has brought back dodos as household companions, and books are treated with fierce devotion. Baconians argue that Francis Bacon wrote Shakespeare, Surrealists and Impressionists clash in the streets, and the police face the odd challenge of countless men named John Milton. In this world, the criminal Acheron Hades steals the original Martin Chuzzlewit and deletes a minor character from every copy, then sets his sights on Jane Eyre. Thursday Next, a renowned literary detective with the Special Operatives who drives a Porsche, uses her uncle Mycroft’s Prose Portal to step into Bronte’s classic and attempt a rescue. As interlopers stir up trouble in Thornfield and paths cross with Jane, Rochester, and Miss Fairfax, the stakes extend to lingering questions about the Crimean War and the pesky black holes that occasionally pull things into a time space void. Discussion centers on this suspenseful, witty caper and the distinctive fictional universe it opens.

    See details

This weekly social dance class explores Scottish Country Dance at the Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts in Zelazo Studio 378 on the UWM campus. Rooted in 17th century tradition yet continually refreshed with new dances, this social and ballroom style from Scotland is enjoyed around the globe and has influenced American forms such as contra and square dancing. Expect welcoming instruction, group formations of six to eight, and lively music from top Scottish artists, with occasional live accompaniment. You do not need to be Scottish, bring a partner, have prior dance experience, or wear a kilt. The environment is inclusive and comfortable for introverts. Please wear soft-soled shoes and bring a water bottle. New dancers are always welcome, and the class is open. Fees support facility rental and are $5, payable by cash, Zelle, or Zeffy. The Milwaukee Scottish Country Dancers offer the class, taught by Rebecca Renee Winnie, a fully certificated teacher with the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society and a former career music educator who also teaches with the Milwaukee and Madison Scottish Country Dancers. While the class is intended for adults, teens ages 13 and up may participate with a parent or guardian, and many families enjoy dancing together. Parking is available on the street, in the Zelazo Center lot, or in the Union parking structure. The RSCDS lists 360 groups worldwide, reflecting the dance’s international community.

    Wayne Hancock

Shank Hall, 1434 N Farwell Ave, Milwaukee · verified Oct 2
    See details

Wayne The Train Hancock fires up a juke joint swing sound that blends honky-tonk, western swing, blues, Texas rockabilly, and big band, a style he has been refining since the 1995 album Thunderstorms and Neon Signs. Performing without a drummer yet losing none of the drive, he commands the stage with lean arrangements that still hit hard. Steeped in tradition without feeling like a throwback, his shows channel the crackle of a vintage jukebox and the pulse of pure hillbilly boogie. Constantly on the road, he pairs an unmistakable voice with hard-charging songs that can turn any room into a dance floor and even inspire at-home two-stepping. True to his no-frills ethos, he stands apart from glossy trends in mainstream country. Notably, one of his CDs even flew on a space shuttle.
