Sip and Stroll Garden Tour/Fundraiser
Savor a drink and small bites as you explore a lovely local garden, with proceeds supporting the Downtown Waukesha Planters to keep downtown vibrant and in bloom. This gathering is the third event in a three-garden Sip and Stroll series. Pricing is $30 for access to all three gardens, $25 for any two, or $15 for one, with payment taken on site by check or cash. Admission includes a glass of wine or another beverage along with light refreshments. Hand painted wine glasses are available for $5 while supplies last. Registration is necessary. As darkness settles, volunteers will offer guided observing through multiple telescopes, weather permitting, highlight galaxies, star clusters, and nebulas, lead informal tours, and answer questions about amateur astronomy and membership in the Milwaukee Astronomical Society. If skies are clear, the eclipse will reach a dramatic maximum with about 93 percent of the Moon immersed in Earth’s umbra, creating a reddish hue with a brighter white area along the northeastern limb. The Horwitz De-Remer Planetarium will be on site with activities and information. This free public event is planned rain or shine. Donations are appreciated to support the volunteer-run facilities, and a minimum contribution of $5 per person is suggested due to parking impacts on the grounds. Dress for outdoor conditions and consider bringing bug spray and a flashlight. To protect night vision, keep lights dim or cover a flashlight with red tape available at the welcome table. Experience an open house and night sky viewing at the Milwaukee Astronomical Society’s nearly 100-year-old, 3-acre observatory in New Berlin. The evening includes a presentation by MAS President Matthew Ryno that looks back at the year, explores spooky nebulas and the science behind them, and highlights what is new at the Society. This gathering is part of Wisconsin Science Festival Week. As darkness settles, volunteers will guide telescope viewing as weather allows. They will offer brief tours, operate the instruments, point out deep sky objects such as galaxies, star clusters, and nebulas, and answer questions about what membership is like. Activities and information from the Horwitz De-Remer Planetarium will also be available on site. This free public event welcomes contributions to help maintain the volunteer-run facilities, with a suggested minimum of $5 per person to offset the impact of parking. Dress for outdoor conditions. The meeting hall is heated and air conditioned, and restrooms are available. Bug spray and a flashlight are recommended, and red tape for dimming lights will be provided at the welcome table to help preserve night vision. Parking is available on the grounds, and vested volunteers will direct vehicles. Tipping them for their efforts is appreciated. The meeting hall is wheelchair accessible with a ramp, and there is a rear walking ramp. Most other buildings are ground level, aside from a few where little activity is planned. Families are welcome. Kids can enjoy hands-on options such as a night starry theater for creating constellations, along with additional activities from the local planetarium. The Society is sustained by volunteers, donations, and memberships. Information on membership options, including family, individual, and student rates, along with benefits such as Saturday Members Night access to the observatory and telescope rentals, will be available at the welcome table. The event takes place rain or shine, with observing dependent on conditions.
