Save a Life Day is a nationwide effort to get life saving naloxone into communities while teaching people how to recognize and reverse an opioid overdose. In West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle, local organizations will provide free naloxone (Narcan) along with brief, practical education that takes only a few minutes. Distribution and training sites will be available across Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan counties at familiar places such as libraries, campuses, health centers, hospitals, pharmacies, coffee shops, restaurants, convenience stores, fire departments, and other community partners. Additional locations may be added.

An early bird battlefield walk at Antietam is planned, and the program features two immersive tours. One focuses on Harpers Ferry with Dennis Frye. Another returns to Antietam with Dennis Frye, Tom Clemens, and Garry Adelman. Dr. Caroline Janney delivers a keynote on the origins of battlefield preservation and commemoration. A conversation with Dennis Frye and Tom Clemens celebrates SHAF at 40, and A. Wilson Greene examines the creation and early years of the Association of Preservation of Civil War Sites, the precursor to the American Battlefield Trust. Clark “Bud” Hall highlights preservation at Brandy Station and across Culpeper County, Virginia, and Dr. John Latschar, former superintendent of Gettysburg National Military Park, discusses landmark battlefield rehabilitation achieved during his tenure. The program, Once Upon a Hill in Maine: The Pedro Tovookan Parris Story, follows the journey of a man born in East Africa around 1833 who was trafficked aboard a Maine-built brig to Brazil, then later found refuge and community in Paris Hill, Maine. Through movement, voice, and song, Rocha highlights Maine’s connections to the trans-Atlantic slave trade and celebrates resilience, creativity, and the power of testimony. Rocha began performing in 1985, came to the United States on a Partners of the Americas grant to deepen his mime training with Tony Montanaro, earned a summa cum laude theater degree from the University of Southern Maine, and studied with Marcel Marceau. His award winning solo blend of mime and storytelling, enriched with mesmerizing voices and sound effects, has reached audiences in 20 countries across six continents and in 44 US states, with appearances at major festivals and institutions such as the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian, the National Storytelling Festival, Wolf Trap, and the Singapore Festival of the Arts. He has delivered two TEDx talks, received the National Storytelling Network’s Circle of Excellence Award, and was honored with the 2024 Maine Arts Commission Fellowship for the Performing Arts.
