Children set off with Princess Ivy on a clue-filled quest through The Castle, solving puzzles to uncover Princess Ivy’s Seven Wishes. Dressing in prince or princess attire is welcome but not required. After the adventure, the group enjoys lemonade, treats, and special entertainment. Two sessions are offered. This program is designed for ages 5 to 10. Reservations are required and space is limited. Tickets are $18 per participating child in this age range. Hosted by the Wood County Prevention Coalition, this free nature scavenger hunt marks its fourth year at McDonough Wildlife Refuge. Groups can choose a short or long trail, and children receive a medal when they complete their route. Every attendee must register individually. Pre-registration is encouraged, but paper forms will be available on site, and participants should check in at the registration table upon arrival for directions. If registering multiple people, additional responses can be submitted one after another. There is no limit to how many individuals one person may register, and each person must be registered, including adults. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to accompany children, though it is not required because WCPC guides will be on the trails to help. Join in the Mighty Muskingum River Raft Race for a fun, competitive ride down the river. Crews will check in at noon, then the race starts at 1:00 PM. The event runs from the Muskingum Boat Ramp at Indian Acres Park to the foot of the Start Westward Monument (stairs leading down to the river bank). Prizes are awarded for top finishers, and each raft requires an entry fee of $20. Rafts must be homemade and non-motorized, everyone must wear shoes or sandals, and each crew member must have a Coast Guard approved PFD during the race. Releases of liability waivers are required before entering the water. After the race and awards, rafts and parts must be removed from the premises right away.

Tackle a Saddle Sore–style Iron Butt ride that starts in Ripley and heads out via Interstate 77 to Interstate 64 west toward St. Louis. The plan keeps fuel stops simple by using stations right off the highway, with the first stop at Exit 137 via Highway 32, the second at Exit 92 off Indiana 66, and the third at Exit 80 in Mount Vernon off Illinois 37. There is also a quick rest-area option early on if needed. The route crosses multiple state lines, and riders will roll through a time zone change roughly a third of the way in. Expect heavier traffic approaching Louisville, and solo riders should be especially mindful of vehicle blind spots. Near the western turn, everyone chooses between two finishes. Route 1 turns around near Scott Air Force Base at Exit 19A and retraces the path east using the same fuel stops, putting total distance just over one thousand miles. Route 2 continues into Missouri for a brief downtown loop and a photo stop by the Arch, adding about forty-five miles, then returns to Illinois to rejoin I-64 east. The downtown section involves a quick sequence of exits and one-way streets, so staying tightly grouped is important through each light. The return leg uses the same stations in reverse back to the starting point. Riders will need to complete IBA eStore registration and a SpotWalla login in advance.

It is the third annual Recovery Awareness 5K Run/Walk, and the entry fee is $15. The effort centers on standing together against addiction and overdose to strengthen the community. Downtown Clean-up Day
This monthly Downtown Clean-Up Day, held April through October, focuses on sprucing up downtown Parkersburg. Volunteers spend about 90 minutes picking up trash, pulling weeds, and creating a clear community impact. Participants meet in front of the Downtown PKB office, where supplies are provided and work areas are assigned before heading out. Attendees are asked to send a Facebook message to confirm participation. Event sponsor is WVU Medicine Camden Clark, and the supply sponsor is Wood County Solid Waste Authority.
October First Friday: Wicked Walkabout
At Historic Downtown Marietta, a Downtown First Friday celebration features shops open late, local artists and musicians, area organizations, and a variety of happenings throughout town. This year’s Boxed-in design challenge follows the theme “Through the Looking Glass,” inspired by Alice in Wonderland, encouraging teams to play with perspective in their creations.
