Foundation Boot Camp - D&D Mini Ranch - Queen Creek, AZ

20026 E Superstition Dr, Queen Creek
    See details

Foundation Boot Camp at D&D Mini Ranch in Queen Creek, AZ focuses on moving beyond step-by-step commands to a clear understanding of stock work. It is suitable for newer handlers and for experienced teams who want to shift from mechanical handling to reading what is happening in the moment. The emphasis is on recognizing that the dog brings instinct and skill, while the handler provides direction, sets the rules of the work, and refines that natural ability so the dog can operate with clarity and confidence. Many common struggles come from not seeing real-time changes. When perception improves, timing sharpens, pressure becomes easier to communicate, and the work grows more effective. This is a fully engaged, working format with enrollment limited to 18 handlers. Participants are organized into three groups of six and rotate every 90 minutes through three stations. Two stations are working sessions, one with Cathy Sumeracki and one with Hana Fullmer. The third is a structured learning block without dogs that uses video review, targeted exercises, and checks for understanding. The rotation keeps learning active rather than waiting for a turn. As handlers learn to work with pressure, timing, and influence instead of relying on rote mechanics, dogs tend to become steadier, more thoughtful, and easier to handle. The aim is not to control the dog’s work, but to support and polish it. With that shift, the work grows quieter, more connected, and more effective, and the handler guides what is already there. Training time covers Five Laws of Leadership exercises, getting the dog’s mind engaged, finding joy in the work, square flanks, reliable stops, arena dynamics, moving through obstacles, pen and corner work, and additional drills. Cathy Sumeracki brings nearly two decades of herding experience, a strong focus on fundamentals, creative teaching, clear materials, and a keen eye for the dog’s perspective. She works with all breeds and levels, has guided students to advanced work including two who now run their own facilities, and has competed across herding venues and stock with multiple champions in AHBA, AKC, and ASCA. Her camps include practical tips for running courses. She serves as a judge for AHBA and AKC and co-authored Teaching the Rules of the Hunt. Hana Fullmer apprenticed with Cathy and now runs her own facility. She understands the challenges people face when starting out, brings a fresh perspective, and is known for a soft approach and strong insight into how dogs think.
