Resavoir is the creative outlet of Chicago musician, composer, and producer Will Miller, a jazz trumpeter trained through Chicago Public Schools and the Oberlin Conservatory. His horn and writing have appeared on records by Chance The Rapper, Lil Wayne, and Mac Miller, and he spent several years in the indie band Whitney. Since 2016 he has leaned into full-scale production, weaving synths, pianos, live and programmed drums, and a MIDI-assisted trumpet into a cinematic blend of soul and jazz shaped by hip hop, a sound heard in collaborations with Eryn Allen Kane, Whitney, Knox Fortune, and on SZA’s SOS, which led the Billboard 200 for ten weeks. Resavoir’s debut album arrived in 2019 to strong acclaim, including an 8.2 from Pitchfork. That same year the live ensemble, featuring Akenya and Sen Morimoto among others, made its London debut at the inaugural Boiler Room Festival, then recorded at Total Refreshment Studios, yielding a version of Charles Tolliver’s Plight released by Blue Note on the Transmissions from Total Refreshment Centre compilation. SEEKERS explores the esoteric through performance, layered soundscapes, and storytelling, shaping spoken and musical journeys through liminal territory. Hundley is a journalist, author, and filmmaker who serves as series editor for Taschen’s Library of Esoterica, a multi-volume visual reference on esoteric traditions. Her books include a biography of Gram Parsons for DaCapo, a best-selling guide to Los Angeles, and an in-depth survey of Dennis Hopper’s photography from Taschen. Maheu is an actor and occasional comedian, as well as the guitarist and vocalist for the heavy metal trio Zig Zags. Comitta is a multimedia artist and the author of The Nature Book, Patchwork, and People’s Choice Literature: The Most Wanted & Unwanted Novels. In 2017, they created and starred in Bill: The Musikill, an experimental sci-fi musical developed with Fire Drill as part of Minneapolis’s Momentum Dance Festival.

Elias Merhige’s complete Begotten Cycle. The program features the new 4K restoration of his 1989 feature Begotten, followed by Din of Celestial Birds from 2006 and Polia & Blastema: A Cosmic Opera from 2022. The total running time is 126 minutes and the screening includes an intermission. Composer and sound designer Gavin Gamboa will appear in person to discuss his work on Polia & Blastema. Spanning more than three decades, this trilogy charts a mythic arc in which deities come into being and are undone, treating cinema as an alchemical practice that turns light into substance. It is believed to be the first time the complete Begotten Cycle has been presented in Los Angeles. Begotten has been championed by prominent critics as a major work of modern cinema and as a profoundly unsettling vision. Its wordless creation story unfolds through stark, ritualized imagery shaped by Merhige’s distinctive photographic process. Shot on black-and-white 16mm reversal stock and then rephotographed frame by frame through neutral density filters, the undertaking stretched across four years and required roughly ten hours of labor for each finished minute. After early rebuffs from conventional distributors, the film built a following through a remarkable chain of advocates, from a VHS viewed by Pacific Film Archive director Edith Kramer to support from Susan Sontag, leading to a sold-out MoMA screening, a Film Forum engagement, and placement on TIME’s list of the ten best films of 1991. The new 4K restoration reveals the full intensity of the imagery, with weightier blacks, striking whites, and grain rendered as a living texture. Din of Celestial Birds revisits this cosmology in a short that premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, combining analog and digital techniques to traverse the violent birth of matter, the evolution of life, and the emergence of consciousness. Polia & Blastema completes the cycle as a cinematic opera, pairing Merhige’s libretto with original music and sound by Gavin Gamboa. Rooted in a Gnostic creation myth of two beings separated across time and space and drawn toward reunion, it explores collisions of organic and inorganic matter, decay, and supernatural horror, drawing on Viennese Actionism and philosopher Eugene Thacker’s idea of a world that exists beyond us.

Guest chef Dora Herrera of YUCA'S leads the instruction and shares insights from a family tradition that spans decades. Recognized by the James Beard Foundation with an America’s Classics honor, Herrera is the daughter of Socorro Herrera, who launched YUCA'S in 1976 to celebrate Yucatán cooking. Her stewardship has strengthened the restaurant’s legacy, earning loyal fans and praise, and helping cement YUCA'S as a cherished fixture in Los Angeles. This class is part of a tamal series that delves into the many regional styles found across Mexico. Known in Nahuatl as tamalli, the tamal is a corn masa bundle that can take on different shapes and sizes and hold a wide range of fillings. Deeply tied to celebrations and ancestral remembrance, tamales continue to bring families together through modern tamaladas. Participants practice key techniques, including preparing masa, building a flavorful filling, and folding and wrapping with corn husks or banana leaves to keep this time-honored craft alive.
